When this trend start? I can understand the four pop-under windows
coming up when I visit Mousepad (blocked now, at least) but today I saw some ad on top of the content. When I scrolled down the screen, the advert followed, continuously covering the text.

Is this going to be an ongoing 'feature' now??

MousePlanet uses several ad networks to serve ads. And as ad-blocking software becomes more prevalent (I'm assuming you're using it yourself to block pop-ups), the advertisers are finding more creative ways to make sure you see their ads.

(BTW - you shouldn't be getting 4 pop ups when you come to MousePAD, however, if you link through MousePLANET you might get two there and two here.)

I'm not aware of a major new campaign involving sticky pop-overs, but I'll have Tony check. Even if you come across one of those, there is always a "close window" X on them.

But I guess I have to make my usual disclaimer about advertisments: Web sites cost money. Discussion boards cost money. MousePlanet is a business, not a charity. We offer subscriptions to help offset the cost of the discussion boards - those subscriptions come with the option to turn off advertisments. I think $20 a year is a bargain for the value MousePad provides, and it does get rid of those pesky ads.

I agree, it was sooo nice to subscribe and log in to nothing but boards. Considering the amount of traffic and the services you provide, I'm surprised its not more to be honest.

True, and that is your right as an operator. $20 seems like a great deal for the amount of content offered here. I only block pop-ups/unders, not banners, so I do see some of your ads. I do support several systems (reelradio.com being the largest money-wise one this year), but I won't pay, however, to support sites that push popups or content obscuring 'peskware' ads on non-subscribers, even though I feel the payment is valid for the actual content.

Then again, I may just be schizophrenic, or just plain wrong.

Here is the difference, so you get some idea of context. With some ad campaigns we are seeing right now, here is what we get in the terms of revenue:

Banner Ad: $.75 / 1000 views
Pop Up Ads: $4.00 / 1000 views
Intrusive Ad (like the ones you hate): $12.00 / 1000 views.

That is a hige difference, and these are actual numbers from actual campaigns on the site right now.

We have had an Amazon honor system link on the site for a number of years. Long before the peskware ads were developed, and while some did donate, it wasn't a lot. So, ads are what pay the bills around here. When push comes to shove, we have to keep running the ads that pay a higher amount in order to keep the site up and running.

I'm willing to do my part by clicking on some of them if it'll help pay the bills at MousePad! ;)

but I won't pay, however, to support sites that push popups or content obscuring 'peskware' ads on non-subscribersSubscriptions block ads on MousePad, not MousePlanet. Everyone sees them there, including the site owners. MousePad subscriptions are a way for members to pay for the resource-intensive extras (like Avatars) that come with membership, and have the added advantage of being ad-free at the "premiere" level.

We are not increasing the number of "perskware" ads in an effort to bully people into paying for subscriptions. We are simply choosing ads that pay us more.

If I have 100,000 ad spaces to sell, and I can get $1200 for them, or I can get $75 for them, it's absolutely insane to opt for the smaller amount. Again, we're a business, not a charity, not a goverment-funded entity, not a community service program.

We draw the line at take-over ads, (which prevent you from accessing content by closing them) and ads we don't consider appropriate for our family-friendly site. But advertising is simply the easiest way to generate the revenue we need to keep the site running.
