View Full Version : Baby switch question (DLR)
Karen256 08-24-2005, 01:17 PM My three year old will probably be over 40 inches next time we go, but he's not to into fast rides yet. I wouldn't dream of taking him on Space or ToT, even though he'll be tall enough.
So if you have a young child that is tall enough to ride, but chooses not to, can you still use the kid switch?
hlbtimes2 08-24-2005, 02:07 PM Yes, they dont care what the reason is- having a small child that can't be left alone is the only requirement.
AmandasDad 08-24-2005, 03:01 PM Do they do this for all rides or just some. If some, where do I find out which ones?

At Disneyland, it's just for rides with height restrictions, including Autopia, roller coasters, Indiana Jones, etc. In theory they should be able to do it for other rides but they don't have a system in place on any rides except for the rides with restrictions.
When your family gets in the regular line, then whoever is not riding approaches the Cast Member at the queue entrance. The adult not riding asks the CM for a "Rider Switch" Pass (or you can call it a baby swap or a child switch, they'll know what you mean.)
The CM gives you a color-coded pass and the pass and/or the CM should explain to you how it will work. It will be good for up to two people to return after the group has finished riding. If the ride has fastpass, the two people will usually use the fast pass entrance. If not, then they will enter through the exit or the HCA entrance.
Hope that helps,
Adrienne

As far as I know, its for the big rides that have height requirements. Indy, Space, BTMM, Splash, Soarin', etc. I dont think they would give you one for something like Peter Pan or Dumbo, but I might be wrong. We never tried to get one for rides like that.
Another common question is the use of fast pass and child swap- yes, you can use them together. Get two past passes. Use one for the first rider, and get a child change pass. Hold on to the 2nd fast pass until you want to ride later- the 2nd rider will not need one with the child change pass.
Another good thing to know is- the 2nd rider can take someone with them. So, if you have more people in your party, someone can wait and go with the 2nd rider or someone in the party can ride twice.
You can also hold the pass and come back later, which is nice if you have a cranky kid- although we never had to do that.

We use it on Peter Pan, Alice, etc... You can use it on any ride the child might not be big enough for, scared of, or even if the child is napping in the stroller and you want to ride without waking the child. Its very convenient.

How have you used it on peter pan and Alice? I've wanted to use it on Haunted Mansion Holiday (as I know others have, also) and we've been told no.

disneyjunkie 08-24-2005, 10:13 PM My daughter has used the baby switch many times but the 2 nights ago encountered a problem on Soaring. The Cm told her they dont hand out switch passes 30 mins prior to closing when she went to guest relations they told her that wasnt true and had her fill out a complaint form.

AdrienneOn Peter Pan, we've just approached the CM, and they actually tell us, "You know the dog can't ride", and we say "Yes, we are going to switch", and then when the first party comes off, my daughter and I go to the exit. Its never been an issue. It is my understanding from guest services it can be used on ANY ride. I remember asking the first time we took the dog, and they explained it to me then.
rfaljean 08-25-2005, 10:12 AM We used it for POTC.... baby boy was sleeping in the stroller...hubby just went up the exit line with the stroller, while the girls and I rode...then after, we switched...
Crazy4DL 08-25-2005, 11:57 AM I wonder if it depends on the CM.
I know my dd and I were at DL May of 04 by ourselves with her 3 kids. We were going to ride PotC and asked for a baby pass since her baby was a sleep in the stroller. We were told they did not give a baby pass on a ride that there was not a height restriction on. :(
TowerofTerror 08-25-2005, 01:34 PM well it goes to show it up to the castmember if they want to provide a pas for ride that that don't have a height requirement
ToursbabeC3po 08-25-2005, 08:19 PM If you have a child that does not want to ride On attractions that do not have a hieght restriction everyone in your group must go through the line and when you get to the front explain that your child does not want to ride but you wish to ride when your party exits the attraction. IF you ask out front about doing a switch they will say no because there is no switch passes for these attractions.
It is true about the 30 min rule. Most cast members in guest relations have no idea about it because it is impossible for them to know about all the guidelines for attractions just like atrractions people do not know all the guidelines for Guest relations. The reason they do this is because after the last person in the line goes on the attraction and the attraction powers down the ride and they do not want to disappoint a guest that is running up the exit or alternate entrance to get there ride when it is impossible to let them ride after the attraction is closed.
lauramaynot 09-01-2005, 07:58 PM Child switch was wonderful when we used it with babies...all my kids can ride almost everything now (youngest still a tad short for indy) but if you are going to use it make sure that the child doesn't feel left out. We always take DS who is too small for indy to Tarzan's treehouse while the others ride. The older ones know if they go on indy they won't go into the treehouse...the last couple of trips all three chose the treehouse..lol! but by choosing a tamer attraction for the smaller one to GET to go to while the others do something they can't do usually does the trick for me. here's a list of the alternatives we have used for our little one
Indy - Treehouse
Big Thunder Railroad - Mark Twain or Little Patch of Heaven Petting Zoo
Space Mountain - The Monorail
Splash Mountain - Winnie the Pooh Meet n Greet or feeding ducks on lower level of the Hungry Bear Resturant
Matterhorn - King Arthurs Carosel
Since my older kids usually didn't care for those attractions and understood how left out Adam felt they always went along with it and said things like "no fair - you get to do ______" and "Wow your so lucky to ride that and I can't"
If you don't have older kids it may not be worth the time it takes to baby switch for about five years we lived without any of the mountains or indy and then they grew up and the rides seemed better than we remembered them... :D
