View Full Version : Flash Drive question
blueckles 08-16-2005, 04:18 PM I am taking a computer class this fall and the teacher said I needed to make sure "to be using a flash drive (at least 64MB) to store all of my files." What exactly does this mean? This is only the 2nd computer class I've taken and the first one only required us to have formatted disks so I'm kind of lost. The first class meets on Thursday, so I can just ask the teacher then, but I thought I would keep a lookout online to see if I could find it before then. Any suggestions?

Thank you so much for your help Andrew! This helps a lot.
disney jones 08-16-2005, 08:40 PM these are like the pocket calculators of the '80's or the Palm Pilots of the '90's: a must-have for any engineering geek - very handy.
blueckles 08-16-2005, 08:57 PM Thanks for your help guys. I actually just bought one off of Ebay. It only came to 13 dollars, including shipping and handling. It's a Lexmar. Is that decent?
SCUBAbe 08-16-2005, 10:05 PM you're lucky. I would have rather used a flash drive than what we used back in the day............zip drives....LOL...I have so many if those stupid things filled with my class projects...
Barbossa 08-16-2005, 11:15 PM Surprisingly enough, us Geeks still use...3.5" floppy disks. We have older computers and test equipment in our labs that only use floppies. (Yes, they don't have USB ports.)
Being an old Geek, I remember using 9" floppies in college and at work. Anyone else remember these?
blueckles: If you mean "Lexmark", that's a very good brand. Have fun in computer class!

You mean you used 9" floppies instead of cards????
I don't think the 'average' student at my school used those extra big ones (maybe some majors did) - I missed the cards by one year (they put terminals in various places on campus right before my freshman year).
One thing about the flash drive - I hope it's a 'skinny' one -- some designs are fairly bulb-like, and a lot fatter than the USB connection part, and some computer designs don't deal with those well, either from the ports being too close together, or having a cover over the port that doesn't get far enough out of the way.

Sure the Lexmar will be absolutly fine. It's one of those things that are so generic that there really aren't too many good ones and bad ones, just different compaines selling simular things in differnt plastic cases and different prices.

I remember when i got my first Zip disk.... 1 dosk was bigger than my entire Hard Drive!!!
3.5" will be around for a while for many of us I'd say but I'm not sorry to see them disapear for most users. The numbe rof lost and damaged files we've seen has dramtically reduced since we stop buying computers with floppy drives.

I didn't want to completely date myself. I used cards in my freshman year, the card reader was bigger than a refrigerator. It always misfed. And if you made a mistake typing up a punchcard, into the trash it went! (And the cards weren't cheap.)
No regrets, it's been great witnessing the evolution of computing over the past 20 years. Back then computers were a thrill. Now they're mostly a pain. (I'm the "IT department" for my family's computers, not particularly fun. Ladies: geeks may be geeks, but they'll keep your computers running. :p )

Just don't drop the tray!!! :~D :geek:
