Not a disney game I know but I think I saw someone with a character from this game in their avatar.

I need opinions, I currently have played EQ1, EQ2, City of Heroes and Guild Wars and now I am considering WoW. What you like, dislike etc.. would be great!

Any class suggestions, what you like about yours, things you can do. I am told the graphics are kind of cartoonish.

What is this game, and can you get it on the PS2?

You're probably talking about me, although there are a few other folks here who play WoW.

From what I know about Guild Wars, WoW is similar but is not so focused on the socializing of the characters -- more quest-driven.

What kind of class/profession you choose depends a lot on what sort of game play you like to do, but here's a very basic rundown of things to consider before you roll a new char:

Alliance vs. Horde: WoW has two playable factions. Alliance are your typical "good guys" -- humans, night elves, dwarves, gnomes. Horde are orcs, taurens, undead, and trolls. My general impression is that most of the realms (different Blizzard computer servers you create your character in; for the most part once you create a character for a specific realm you cannot switch realms) have a ratio of about 2 alliance to 1 horde character. Don't necessarily choose one over the other because of how they look. Depending on the race you choose, they are given different racial abilities that may greatly benefit whatever class you choose. For example, I'm a night elf priest. Those, it turns out, are REALLY LAME. Dwarven and undead priests are much better because they get some special abilities that really help with their priestness.

PVP vs. PVE: Do you want to spend all of your time fighting the other faction? If so, choose a PVP realm ("player versus player"). If not, and you just wanna mostly focus on doing the quests, choose a PVE realm ("player versus environment"). It's MUCH easier on a PVE realm, but if you like the challenge a PVP environment is much more fun. Just be aware that on a PVP realm you will die. All the time. (but you know you resurrect yourself so it's not the end of the game if you die).

Do you want to mostly get up in the face of the mob (monsters) and kill them with swords (warrior or paladin)? Would you rather take a ranged weapon like a rifle or a crossbow to them? Do you want to mostly play with others, roam around unseen and pickpocking mob instead (rogue)? Would you prefer to play by yourself instead of joining up with parties to work on quests together, and just have your own helper pet with you that takes a lot of the damage (hunter/warlock)? Do you want the ability to change into a different animal and fight that way (like turning into a very strong bear) (druid)? Would you rather not get your hands dirty, and just cast a bunch of spells to kill things (mage/warlock/priest)? Or, instead of fighting much at all, do you want to spend most of your time healing and curing the warriors (priest)?

If you haven't, go to http://www.worldofwarcraft.com to read the various introductions to the various classes and professions, and then go read their forums. Most of them have player-written FAQs with ideas on what works.

Since this is the only MMPORG I've played I can't comment on the graphics. I think they look perfectly fine and they don't really look cartoonish at all. It's a far cry from Ultima and other games I'm somewhat acquainted with. There are no cut scenes, however -- other than the intro you get when you roll your character, the rest is all in-game play only.

Game is roughly $50.00, and $15 a month subscription. So far it's the best money I've spent on myself in a long time and I get more out of it than I ever expected.

If you have any friends who already play, make sure you choose the same realm as them, and that you choose whatever faction they are (Alliance or Horde) or else you won't be able to play with them at all.

If you play EQ you are already familiar with Allakhazam? They have a WoW section at http://wow.allakhazam.com/ that has good info as well.

Depending on how much you want to play, the game is very quest-driven until you hit lvl 60. After that, it's all about high-level raid instances where you no longer get points for quests, but instead you work with other people in parties from 5 to 40 (yes, FORTY people at one time). There's also places you can go where you fight the other faction ("Battlegrounds") which you can now play at any level. I also hear word that they are working on an expansion set that may open up a new continent or something.

PS: As a challenge, once you plateau a character you can always create other characters of other classes/professions so you'll never run out of stuff to do.

PPS: Moved to the Tech Room because this is completely unrelated to Disney.

PPPS: You want cartoony? Try VMK. :D

Not available in PS2 or XBox. This is a full-on computer game. However praise be to the developers at Blizzard, they chose to develop it both for Windows AND for the Mac. Huzzah!

Thank you Lani what a beautiful explanation!:) I'm going to play it tonight, my honey is letting me borrow his copy and if I like I may play it.

I know of Alla, I have already been checking the main site so I will check that out, thanks for the link.

I wasn't looking for cartoony, someone just said it was. I was thinking an Undead Priest, since I'm usually a healer so I'm glad you mentioned that. hehe

SummerinFL -- You will need his account number to be able to play, but if you use his account number, you will log into his account so you will be able to click on his character name and play HIS character. Make sure he helps you set up a brand new character so you start from scratch. That way you will get to start from the beginning and you will have fun figuring out everything at an easier level where things aren't scary. Also, ask him if he has a guest account pass that came with his box. That way you can play for 10 days on your own. If you log into his account, you won't be able to play when he's logged in.

Yeah, we want to play together and apparently his 10 day guest number is no good. :/ So we are trying to work out now what to do.

Well, it's a bit of an investment, and you don't wanna spend that money if it turns out it's not your thing. I would say, at least for today, that you install it and play a bit on his account using his account number. Just play for an hour or two and see if it's something you wanna play around with some more, anyway.

i have been playing this game for over a year (my hubby got into the alpha) and i STILL cannot stop. it gets a lot of things right as far as getting people who never played mmorpgs before (me) being able to catch on quickly and have fun.

in fact, its sorta been a bit consuming for me. i stopped reading these forums, maintaing a journal, etc..all because of WoW .. (aCK!)...
