Apparently most of the studios are now on Linux. Probably saves them a pretty penny.

Lani 07-27-2005, 03:10 PM Linux is an open-source operating system, meaning it is not owned by any one company. Improvements to the operating system are done by a large pool of volunteer engineers from around the world. You can "buy" Linux in that there are different companies that package it with installation programs and other bells and whistles, but in the end it means it's very very cheap to run. Linux is very similar to Unix, an operating system that runs very large server computers (much larger than the desktop PCs you and I have on our desks). Various flavors of Unix are sold by different companies, including Sun, HP, and IBM. Unix is designed to be operated in a large network system. The biggest difference between Linux and the other flavors of Unix is that Linux runs on a desktop PC -- so it gives you an alternative to a Windows environment. A lot of companies don't like to use Windows on their computers or servers because of numerous issues (including lots of viruses). |
