Monterey Bay Aquarium "Sea Notes" August 2005
Welcome to Sea Notes, your monthly email update from the Monterey
Bay Aquarium.

1. EXHIBIT NEWS: FLYING GURNARDS, CALIFORNIA BARRACUDA & WHITE
SEABASS
They may sound like a trapeze act, but the two flying gurnards
recently added to the parrotfish exhibit in "Splash Zone" don't
actually fly. They do fan out their very large pectoral fins like
wings when disturbed. Usually these fins are kept close to the
body when swimming or are used to "walk" across the seafloor.

The Kelp Canopy exhibit opposite the Kelp Lab has a few new
residents--two small California barracuda and several white
seabass. Both species will eventually outgrow this exhibit and be
moved to larger quarters; the barracudas to the Outer Bay
exhibit, and the white seabass to the Monterey Bay Habitats
exhibit.

The adult white seabass in the Monterey Bay Habitats exhibit are
about four feet long and swim right at the surface. From below
they are bright silver with a large, fanlike yellow tail. From
above, they appear brown or dark gray. You can get a good view
from the overlook near the penguin exhibit in "Splash Zone."
This countershading helps make them hard to see from both
directions.

Visit What's New on our web site to learn about these and other
new arrivals in our exhibits.

2. AQUARIUM NEWS: BECOME AN AQUARIUM VOLUNTEER
How would you describe a jellyfish or introduce an octopus? These
are skills you can acquire as an aquarium volunteer guide. You
can learn more at one of three informational meetings on
Wednesdays from 7 to 9 p.m.: August 24 and September 7 in the
aquarium's auditorium, and August 31 at Los Arboles Middle School
in Marina.

Volunteer guides help interpret galleries and exhibits to the
aquarium's 1.8 million annual visitors. Aquarium volunteers also
receive many of the same benefits as employees. You must be at
least 18 years old; bilingual speakers encouraged.

You'll find details at

4. CONSERVATION IN ACTION: TRACKING ELEPHANT SEALS, SPRING OTTER
COUNT, COLLAPSE OF COD
The long oceanic journeys of northern elephant seals make them
excellent "oceanographers." Read more about the tagging of one
female elephant seal and the insights she'll bring to Tagging of
Pacific Pelagics (TOPP) researchers on the TOPP web site:
http://www.toppcensus.org/

Our Sea Otter Research and Conservation program team helped with
the annual spring count of California sea otters. This year,
otter numbers were down, but the overall trend during the past
three years shows slight growth in the threatened sea otter
population.

If you need another reason to use our Seafood Watch pocket
guides, consider this recent report on the future of codfish
populations off Nova Scotia. Research reported in the journal
Science concludes that the ecosystem has been so altered by the
collapse of the once-abundant cod populations that a comeback may
now be impossible.
