View Full Version : Need some Mac help
passthepixiedust 07-16-2005, 02:45 PM Okay, I confess. I am an absolute MORON when it comes to using this computer. I had it for 7 months before I even realized that I could burn CD's. So please be patient if my questions are really silly.
I have an Emac running Mac OSX(Safari is my browser) and I can't seem to watch any, or at least most, of the video links people post. I really want to watch the TOT video. And the Screamin'. And well, ALL of them. Is there something I can download so that I can see them ? All my computer type friends are PC people and just scratch their heads and tell me to buy a "real" computer !
I noticed a few people on here have mentioned having Macs, so I thought I would try asking..... Thanks in advance for any advice you might have :)
Opus1guy 07-16-2005, 03:10 PM My guess is that you're hitting movies that require Windows Media Player. There is a free version for Macs. Just go here to download and install it (scroll down until you see the version for your particular Mac OS).

Any movies that require Quicktime...well...that should already be built-in on your Mac.
Stupid_American 07-16-2005, 03:30 PM Most of the uploaded Disney videos are Windows Media Player files.
Be warned; if you aren't really comfortable with your computer, you may just want to resign yourself to passing on WMP.
As is the case with most MS products for Mac, it's buggy as hell.
Everyone I know has has given up on it.

Funny. I've installed it on dozens of Macs of various OS's, all without a single problem.
Stupid_American 07-16-2005, 08:15 PM Funny, I've tried different WMP versions on different Macs and couldn't remove it quick enough.
The "Sitelink" page relays others' experiences.
I haven't tried Version 9. Until I start reading its praises, I don't plan to.
It doesn't sound like the OP is a geek, so I thought I might post a disclaimer.
passthepixiedust 07-16-2005, 11:06 PM thanks, to both of you ! It seems to be working..... yay, I can finally see the video files !! I really appreciate your help, but be warned, now that I have found people to answer my silly questions, I may become a pest ! ;)
Stupid_American 07-17-2005, 08:27 AM Maybe I'll give it a try

Wow! I didn't know I could have WMP on my Mac! I just skipped any emails with those files attached. But it looks like installing it wouldn't really be worth it. Eh, it's usually a bunch of junk anyway.
PapiBear 07-18-2005, 11:01 PM Mac users still have Virtual PC to fall back on. My suggestion is to get it and use the Windows version of WMP within Windows for those WMA/WMV files you come across.

We all love our Macs, of course, but in this multi-platform world, occasionally some of us need to use a PC. Fortunately for us, we don’t have to give up our Macs to do these things. And we also don’t have to sacrifice precious dollars or space for a stand-alone PC.
Instead, all we need is Virtual PC from Microsoft. Using Virtual PC, you can run Windows applications, connect to PC networks and share files — all from your Mac.
adriennek 07-18-2005, 11:18 PM I have Virtual PC for a business database program I run. That would be a bit of an investment, though, just to watch WMP files.

Andrew 07-18-2005, 11:22 PM There's always VLC (http://www.videolan.org/vlc/). It's free, open-source, multi-platform (including OS X) and can play darn near anything (http://www.videolan.org/vlc/features.html).
Stupid_American 07-19-2005, 08:31 AM Installed WMP and it runs fine.
Now, if they could only improve the quality of the files. :(
