Perhaps I'm a bit paranoid... but since we'll be bringing a rented (well, from our medical coverage) wheelchair I thought I would check. Is there a problem with wheelchairs "rolling away"? Should I secure it somehow when we are on rides?

Not only would this be a financial pain, but a pain for my son to have to walk.

Thanks.

I doubt that Disneyland will let you "chain" your wheelchair anywhere on the resort. I think this usually results in the wheelchair being confiscated by security. On the times that I have used a wheelchair, I haven't had any experience with people "stealing my chair". Although there is a thought that they might "roll away" thanks to others wanting to get an advantage.

The best thing to do is to rent one at the park and keep your reciept. If it gets taken, then you can get a new one at guest services without having to pay the charge again. Wheelchairs can be rented at a failrly inexpensive rate at the parks.

Miost times you get out of a wheelchair, the ride has a place for you to keep the chair in. It is watched over by CM's and I wouldn't worry too much about it...

Alan's Wheelchairs rents in the area, and has some good rates, and positive reviews.... It is a lot cheaper than the park's chairs, and you can use them in getting to and from the parks.

As others have said most of the time a CM is very close to where the wheelchair is left. DH has a Quickie that was a pricey wheelchair (that goodness for insurance!!) and we've had no problems. In fact I even keep a backpack on the chair with snacks and water and feel fairly confident leaving the whole thing while we ride. I do keep $$$, tickets/ passes and camera with me just because I have that paranoid thing going on but we've never ever had a problem in our many visits over the years.

What about using a tylock to add a name tag of some sort on the frame of the chair? That way it would be hard for a theif to remove at the park but you could take it off when you return the chair? DH's chair is marked with his name in a couple of locations. I figure that's good for any argument about who owns the chair. ;)

I have not heard of personal wheelchairs being taken in the parks. However, one thing you can do is just put a bicycle lock on the wheel itself. It will not prevent a CM from relocating it (especially when straightening up a stroller parking area) but it will make it very difficult to drive away.

I have never heard of a personal wheelchair being stolen but I have seen Park chairs get stolen by teens that are trying to line hop. Please don't expect cast members to "watch over" you chair while on the ride they are busy working the attraction and they are not allowed to be held responsible legally for any personal belongings. I don't think that this will be an issue at all if it is not a Disneyland wheelchair. I think people think if they steal a Disneyland wheelchair it can just be replaced so they don't think twice about it. This happened with Disneyland strollers too they always got stollen but it could be that they all look alike and they just did not look at the name. I hope you have a great trip!!!!

Do people just walk out the gate with them? How would people take strollers from DL? There are always CMs at the exits.

The people that take them use them for the day then turn them back in at the end of the day. Or leave them somewhere in the park when they are done with them. The post was about a person who wants to rent a wheelchair from a outside source for her trip coming up and was wondering if wheelchairs get stollen in the park very often.

I do believe that alot of times people take the wrong stroller by mistake. when you have crying kids, and there are 20 green strollers in front of you the mistake can happen.

DBF I was not refering to people taking the wheellchairs or strollers out of the park. But my post was not very clear so I am sorry.

Cast members are good about not letting Disney wheelchairs and strollers get beyond security check points. While you can take them between parks, you cannot take them beyond that. I have seen CM's stop guests trying to leave the security tents with strollers. Of course, if you decide to walk away with it, then you lose your deposit anyway so.

Heck CM's stopped us and checked my daughters chair and since it's a Quickie and custom there's no mistaking it for one of those rentals from the park...I'd be amazed if someone managed to get a park rental out of the security area but I suppose anything is possible given the right set of conditions.
