Blogger (http://www.blogger.com/) -- free, easy to use, and the backend is run by Google. You can publish to your own Web space or use BlogSpot (yourname.blogspot.com) for free. How can you go wrong?

Blogs (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Blogs) as defined on Wikipedia:
A weblog (usually shortened to blog, but occasionally spelled web log) is a web-based publication consisting primarily of periodic articles (normally in reverse chronological order). Although most early weblogs were manually updated, tools to automate the maintenance of such sites made them accessible to a much larger population, and the use of some sort of browser-based software is now a typical aspect of "blogging".

A blog is an online journal. Blogging is what you do with it. Post photos, write in it, etc.

Blogging is letting the world read your journal entries. It's up to you to decide how much of your personal details you would like to disclose in those entries.

I say you should go with livejournal or myspace. Livejournal is more about the blogs but myspace is preffered by everyone I know because of how easy it is and you don't need to really keep it up as much.

Or you could get really fancy and build your own personal website from scratch and then find a good deal on a hosting service and you won't have to worry about the barrage of advertisements that pop up on your blogging page.

I think to answer this well would require knowing what kind of blogging you want to do. Is is more personal or more reportorial? For your friends or an attempt to reach a wide audience?

If it's more 'personal', Myspace, Livejournal, and Xanga are pretty good for that.

Although I don't keep a traditional blog, many people whose blogs and Internet presences I really respect use Movable Type (http://www.sixapart.com/movabletype/[/url). I've only looked at it a bit and I really think it's elegant. I like elegant solutions.

Don't forget Yahoo's new 360 (http://360.yahoo.com/reg/whatis.html). You need a referral, though.

Referral? What do you mean? If you have a Yahoo ID, you can get started with it right away.

Ah, they must have changed that. Used to be that you needed a referral. Obviously, I don't use it myself. :)
