Monterey Bay Aquarium "Sea Notes" July 2005
Welcome to Sea Notes, your monthly email update from the Monterey
Bay Aquarium.

1. EXHIBIT NEWS: MONTEREY BAY HABITATS, WESTERN SNOWY PLOVERS
Our Monterey Bay Habitats exhibit is looking better than ever and
has several new animals. Here's a partial tally: four bat rays,
six sevengill sharks, three Pacific halibut, two California
halibut, two starry flounders, three big skates, three California
skates, two wolf eels, seven leopard sharks, two white sturgeon,
three spiny dogfish and two giant sea bass. Although times can
vary based on staff availability, look for divers feeding the
larger animals on Wednesdays and Sundays around 2:00 p.m.

After a long absence, our aviary is home once again to Western
snowy plovers. Because of wing injuries, the two adult females on
display cannot be released to the wild. This species is a visitor
favorite because of its small size and big attitude. The last
time we had a snowy plover on exhibit was in 2003--a single male
adult who entertained visitors and also served as a surrogate
father behind the scenes to several chicks that were eventually
released to the wild.

Visit What's New on our web site to learn about these and other
new arrivals in our exhibits.

2. SPECIAL EVENT: JAZZ AT THE AQUARIUM
There's still time to join us on Saturday, June 18 for Jazz at
the Aquarium, our premiere musical event, presented at venues
throughout our exhibit galleries. This year's headliners are
jazz pianist Bill Charlap, performing with his trio, and sultry
vocalist Maria Muldaur.
Charlap is often compared in range and impact to artists like
Bill Evans and Keith Jarrett, and has been praised by the New
Yorker magazine as "a gifted pianist...." Muldaur is best known
for her 1974 hit Midnight at the Oasis, but her vocal style
transcends pop music. She's an artist whom the San Francisco
Chronicle says "approaches her material with a jeweler's
precision, cutting each tune scrupulously into a fine gem."
Jazz at the Aquarium benefits our education programs and the
nonprofit Kuumbwa Jazz Center.

3. PROMOTIONS & EVENTS: AQUARIUM ADVENTURES, MBARI OPEN HOUSE,
JAWS BENEFIT SCREENINGS

Aquarium Adventures Summer Programs, June 18-Sept. 5
Have you had an adventure yet? Summer at the aquarium means our
Aquarium Adventures programs are underway. Popular programs
returning this year are Underwater Explorers kids' SCUBA
adventure, Science Under Sail excursions on Monterey Bay, behind
the scenes feeding tours and Aquarium Detectives--a new program
just for families with children ages 3 to 9.

June 25 (Sat.)
MBARI Open House
The Monterey Bay Aquarium Research Institute (MBARI) is holding
its annual open house from noon to 5:00 p.m. All three research
ships are available for tours and remotely operated vehicles
(ROVs) are on display. MBARI scientists and engineers will also
be on hand conducting special lectures, interpreting educational
displays and sharing their passion about their research.

July 9 (Sat.)
Jaws Benefit Screenings (2 and 7 p.m.)
To celebrate the film's 30th anniversary and benefit our white
shark research and the Monterey County Film Commission, attend
one of two screenings of Jaws at the renovated Golden State
Theatre in downtown Monterey.

Each Saturday showing will be preceded by a presentation about
our white shark research project. We'll also have exhibits and
information about sharks in the theatre lobby that day. Between
showings, you can attend a private reception that's open to the
first 200 ticket buyers who are also aquarium members or friends
of the film commission. For details and tickets, call the Golden
State Theatre Box Office at (831) 372-4555 or visit their web
site:

4. CONSERVATION IN ACTION: PROTECTING BLUEFIN TUNA

Ten years of work by the Tuna Research and Conservation Center
(TRCC) have documented in detail the migrations of giant Atlantic
bluefin tuna and laid the scientific groundwork for new
protections of these imperiled fish. The research is the basis
for a petition just filed with the National Marine Fisheries
Service calling for seasonal closure of waters in the Gulf of
Mexico to tuna longlining (to protect spawning bluefins) and a
separate call for changes to the way bluefin quotas are managed
in the North Atlantic.

Scientists with the TRCC, a joint effort of the aquarium and
Stanford University, published their findings in the April 28
edition of the journal "Nature." Analysis of electronic tagging
data confirmed that the North Atlantic is home to at least two
populations of bluefin: a western stock that spawns primarily in
the Gulf of Mexico, and an eastern stock that breeds thousands of
miles away in the Mediterranean Sea. The data also documented
extensive mixing of the two stocks on feeding grounds, which
makes the western-spawned fish particularly vulnerable to
overfishing. Despite international management and a quota system,
the population of western Atlantic bluefins has declined by 80
percent since the 1970s.

Based on the findings, the Monterey Bay Aquarium joined with four
other conservation organizations to call for additional federal
protection of the tunas on their spawning grounds.
