We were at DLP and couldn't make out the back story line for the Phantom Manor. We really enjoy the ride and would love to know the story behind it. Thanks.

When we visited DL Paris, I kinda left Phantom Manor in a state of "huh? What was that all about???"

It seemed as though the storyline took a BIG shift when you left the attic. I mean, come on...what's with the scary dude and freaky dog when you leave that attic?? What the heck does HE have to do with the bride storyline?? hmmm??

On another note, I kept thinking that the Phantom Manor looked like something I had seen before. When re-reading over the article on Doombuggies.com, I read that they fashioned it from a home in Virginia City, Nevada. Funny thing...I have about 15 pictures of that house in Virginia City. I fell in love with it when we were visiting on time. No wonder the house in DL Paris rang a bell...

Now if they could do something about that freakishly weird dog... :(

Which dog?

When you come out of the attic. Isn't there a freakishly scary man...with his freakishly growling, red eyed dog/wolf/creature by his side???

I believe the scary dude is the actual "Phantom" of the story, he's also seen in the ballroom scene laughing at the bride, wearing a hat and cape. He also appears at the end of the ride just before you see the skeletal bride and hitchhiking ghosts.. If I remember correctly the Phantom is the person who hangs the groom in the stretch room, and the rest of the ride is the bride mourning over her lost love.

I'm assuming the dog is just the Phantoms pet, a very evil looking one at that!

Here's an explanation from The Haunted Mansion: From the Magic Kingdom to the Movies :
"Melanie's fiance' had planned to move her far away from Thunder Mesa...and her father. Henry Ravenswood disapproved and vowed to stop the wedding at all costs....Locals believe that the mysterious Phantom is actually Henry Ravenswood himself....Guests [of the Manor] quickly discover that the Phantom and the Bride-never-to-be are engaged in an eternal stuggle for Ravenswood Manor and the souls of everyone who dares enter. The Phantom...make[s] every attempt to lure unsuspecting visitors to the other side, while the Bride struggles to help her mortal friends live to tell the secret of Phantom Manor."

Can't wait to see it for myself in October!

It's shame the ride itself is nowhere near explicit about the storyline. Instead it's just a jumbled assortment of scenes and if you haven't read up on the storyline beforehand you wouldn't know what is going on. It's a shame as this ride could have been something special but instead it ends up being, in my opinion, the weakest of the Haunted Mansions (well Floridas and Californias anyway.)

You know, I hate to say this, but until I read the 'stories' behind the Florida and California versions, I didn't see a storyline in either of these versions either, just a vauge general sense of a doomed wedding and death. Pretty much a jumbled assortment of scenes around this theme. Personally, I find the differences between the French and American versions to be really refreshing. The French version is so much more macabre than the American versions (this is not your father's haunted mansion) and because the ride is newer, the effects are better.

The reason you didn't see a storyline until you read about it later...is because there technically isn't one (besides the house being opened as a sort of "rest home" for spooks from all over the world). The US Manses are simply a series of macabre/humerous vignettes tied together with an awesome theme song. Nothing wrong with that. CM's and fans have gone a long way toward creating a backstory to "fill in" what the Imagineers left out.

It's a testament to their talent that they selected so many elements to use in the Manses that tapped into our general knowledge of folklore and lent themselves to the creation in the guest's mind of a somewhat cohesive vision.

Hmm...?

I'd say I can see the story quite clearly in Paris, much more clearly than the one in California. In Paris the Storyline seems to flow much better, and doesn't need the voice over to tell it!

Does anyone else think that the DLP Mansion looks like the Bates Mansion from Psyhco? (spelling?)

You know, when I was there I couldn't put my finger on what the PM looked liked...like what it reminded me of. Thanks for saying that! It does look like the Bates mansion.

It's not a house it's a school - the Fourth Ward school built from profits from the Comstock silver mines. Pics of it can be seen at:

Ther's also some feelings that there is a bit of the Psycho house in there as well!
