OK, who's still with us? How well are you staying on point with your diet and exercise plans? I'll start.

My weight is holding steady at 162, and I've relaxed my diet a little, allowing a little more fat, but I'm still staying pretty close to the plan.

I have two more days of work, and then I'll be off until the third week of August. With upcoming travel plans, I won't be riding as much as I would if I were home, but I'll take a bike along on both trips and sneak in some rides when I can. I'll try to stay on my low-fat diet, but I'll be realistic enough to vary a little when circumstances require. (I'm not sure what I'll be eating in northern Spain, but it will likely be what's available. No doubt there will be plenty of seafood.)

I rode the club ride tonight, 23.6 miles at an average speed in excess of 18.5. (Topped out at 30 or so.)

That's all from me now; how are the rest of you doing?

I've been back to my modified Zone Diet and exercising more since last Monday. So far I've lost three pounds, but my clothes are looser, and I look and feel better.

I'm still allowing small treats, because otherwise I'll fall off entirely. You can't be perfect.

after a week of pure and simple being lazy, this morning I got back into the swing of things. Did some fast walking/jogging this morning. I did a 5K on the 28th of May- but after that I just...stopped....I really am trying hard to find a way to accept running/jogging. I don't expect to like it, much less love it. But I don't want to hate it. I don't want to be completely miserable with it. Going to do another 5K (hopefully with better results!) in July sometime. And I've commited myself to the Baltimore marathon 1/2 marathon in October.

Somebody shoot me now -

Hi all!

I am doing the South Beach Diet. I have lost 7 lb. The kids are back on track so I am going to resume exercising today. Looks like I'll be hitting the gym because it is cold and rainy.

Have a great day! :)

Today I weighed in and the scale said I lost another 5 pounds! That's crazy. I hope I'm not losing too much too fast, but I don't want to cut back on exercise or eat more because I think I'll fall off the wagon that way. I'll just keep pluggin on. 3 more pounds until my first goal!

Maybe running/jogging isn't for you. (It certainly isn't for me.)

Everyone reading these threads knows that I am a avid cyclist. But I don't do it just to get the exercise. (OK, sometimes I do.) The things that keep me at it are:

The social aspect. Cyclists are fun to hang with. A little competition, a little encouragement, some good conversation, and we will do things in each other's presence that we wouldn't do in front of our spouses.

The view. We tend to ride on quiet roads and scenic byways through pastures, vineyards, forests, you name it. I've seen a lot of wildlife from the saddle of a bike. Bikes tend to be quiet and therefore less startling to local fauna.

Local knowledge. I know just about every road in a 3-4 county area. I know every little tiny settlement and what's available there. When you know every turn and hill in the road, it's hard to get lost.

I know I wouldn't get that out of running/jogging, and I don't think my 55 year-old frame could take the pounding.

Yet I know runners for whom bike riding is too complex, too fast, too dangerous, too expensive, etc. etc. Just not their cup of tea.

I'm following The Zone diet pretty strictly. This has worked best for me in the past, I think I'm carb-sensitive. I do have cookies occasionally but they are quite small and only one or two. I feel great, no cravings, hunger, or anything. We even go out to eat sometimes and I'm able to find things that work for me.

I'm also upping my exercise, but not crazy. I'm lucky that we have a gym at work. I take Step classes or body sculpting classes. I also to cardio and weights on other days. I take on rest day a week.

Oh - I KNOW running's not for me!!! ha ha ha....seriously, I'm determined to do it. It's good for me, it makes me healthy and - eventually - it will help me develop my legs to looking somewhat human vs. the cut-off tree truncks they resemble now!

Besides - when I cross that finish line in Jan. at WDW I wanna earn that feeling of accomplishment!

The bike thing? I would love to take a bike ride - as soon as they make a comfortable seat! I've tried about 5 or 6 different seats....it's nuts!

Hi all. I finished Phase One and haven't moved onto Phase Two because my weight loss had officially stalled. I haven't been cheating so I'm not sure what's going on.

Any help would be appreciated.

The Zone is similar to South Beach, but the books have more science in it. Basically it's a way of eating to keep your blood sugar and insulin stable. This not only keeps you mentally focused (no sleepy time after lunch anymore) and your hunger in check, but burns fat fast.

It balances carbs, proteins, and fats at every meal. So I eat a moderate amount of lean protein (fish, chicken, sirloin) and tons of veggies and fruit and a little fats and oils. I really recommend reading one of Dr. Sear's books. It's really interesting. But you can still do it on your own by just eating everything in moderation.

Good Luck!

Thanks so much. That's basically what I am doing now sans the fruit. I am going to go see if I can find the book at the library. :)

It sometimes takes a couple of weeks of riding to get accustomed to a bike saddle. And soft isn't better. The firmer part of the saddle needs to match the width of your "sit bones." The last time I bought a saddle, the bike shop gave me a month to return it if I didn't like it. After six years I still have that same saddle.

Just as important (or maybe more so) is proper fitting bike shorts. And there are also various products to minimize chafing in your shorts. But enough about that.

But the most comfortable seats (I have heard) are on recumbant bikes. They have a small but dedicated following.

I have a recumbant exercise bike. I love it. Hated those other ones.

I agree that bicycle pants help. I wore regular pants and oh, I did not last long on that ride. Then, I borrowed the Hubsters bike pants {padded, *ah*} and I felt great and enjoyed the rides with them.

That is a good point to share, how your seat has to match your 'sit bones'.
Makes so much sense.

rentayenta~ I hadn't changed up my routine much and I hadn't started eating like crazy and I gained back 10 pounds. I really was confused because I had done everything the right way {at least I believe I did, exercise, moderate eating, etc.} so why was I gaining it back? I can only guess it was stress.

But, also, if you hit a 'plataeu', it worked for me to take a little break from my workouts {still walked, love walking for it's mental release as well} for a bit and then jumped back into them and it seemed to help.

I can't believe it. We went to Disneyland for a couple of days and then to Santa Barbara for my son's graduation. And I remember several meals when I felt very full. And there was the corn dog, the churro, and the popcorn.

OK, on the plus side--for the most part I stuck to my low-fat diet. And I rode my bike a few miles: About 15 miles Thursday before spending the day at Disneyland, and a total of 54 miles around Santa Barbara, 12 miles after driving home and 61 miles the next morning--but that's not more than I would do if I were home.

So I get on the scale and discover I've LOST 1-2 pounds. What's up with that? :D

I'm leaving for a week in Spain in a few days. I don't expect to stick to the diet ALL the time, but I'll try to make the right choices when I can.

still sticking with the game plan...did my workout this morning, and I am still alive! ;)

I'm not following any particular diet - more along the lines of just saying no to the junk food - and it's working. It's becoming empowering to say "no" to things I don't really need, and are not good for me. That isn't to say I don't induldge once in a while. I had a glass of wine last night - and we are headed to a James Taylor concert this weekend, so I figure another one is in my future!!! :p

Rentayenta I have been dieting the past two weeks or so but I am switching to the South Beach diet today as I want to try to get bad carbs out of my system...I am exactly the kind of eater the book talks about...anyway...
most likely if your weight loss has stalled and you haven't cheated it is because you are building muscle. Especially if you have stepped up your workout at all....Rather than using the scale right now...measure yourself and see if you have lost inches...also your clothing is a good indicator!!!
Wow..this will be interesting at Disneyland next month...I have looked at a lot of the menus and I pretty much know how to stay on track there except for a few meals when I will have what I want. Good luck!!

This whole jogging thing is starting to pan out for me :p ...

Did my routine this morning (which is - at the moment -run 5 min. and fast walk 4 min. repeating 4 or 5 times) and for once it didn't seem like a Herculean effort! while doing my 5 min. run part time seemed to go fast - and while doing the brisk walking part time seemed to go slow....why is that? Anyway - feeling good about my progress :D

I'm here.

I can't believe how long this month is lasting!!!

My scale hasn't gone up or down. I don't know if it is the emotional roller coaster I am on or the change of the seasons {finally warm sunny days, I prefer the cloudy days, I feel more energy, feel I can do more} but I am tired.

I've been wanting to start jogging again. I get that 'when I walk it feels slow'. I walk pretty fast but I love the feeling of flying when I jog/run. But, then again, I enjoy walking and taking life more easy, taking it all in. Today my music of choice {for walking} was very mellow. Encouraging me to look around me and take in the day.

I saw a woman loading up her bike and I was sooo jealous. I don't have a bike. Well, I don't do too well on a bike. But, it was the getting out that I envied. There are sooo many places to ride around here.

I think I am going to try and hit up Coronado and walk along the beach. I am in this mode of appreciating what I have and not to worry about what I don't. Also, about my weight, to accept what I am and not what I want to be. {super thin, of course}.

Don't know if that is giving up or acceptance, really. Haven't really clarified that within myself. What do you guys think? Do you think accepting myself, not quite my weight goal, but still I've come a long way, is giving up?

Kudos to everyone for continuing their workouts and changing of eating habits!

ericles

nawwww mousewife. acceptance is a good thing, in moderation ;)

how can it be giving up when you are out there, taking your walks, and enjoying the outdoors? Half the fight (in my opinion) is in your head. You are getting fresh air, stretching your legs and clearing your head.

That is a pretty healthy thing to do in my book
