i know darkbeer uses smugmug, so i thought i'd give it a shot myself this time around with my photos, especially since i can create those subcategories and all. but it seems like i'm having a lot of problems uploading, like the only reliable way seems to be one at a time, otherwise i end up with failed uploads, duplicates, etc. i have a pc. any clue? should i try it with a mac instead? or maybe it's just my pc?

ergh.. well i just did a simple google search and actually found something that it seems to occur on xp for whatever reason and it advised using some other third party utility to upload, so i'm trying that now, we'll see... just wish i had known about it 4 hours ago when i started trying to upload :(

the 3rd party program is working well, it goes through all the photos. at the end, there are a handful i still need to re-upload because they got messed up during the original upload, but at least it goes on and doesn't abort like smugmug's process does. it also gives you full control in terms of creating new galleries and supports any user-defined (sub)categories and all that. It installs itself as a context menu item (adds a 'send to smugmug' menu item), but it took me a bit to realize it works for folders only, not individual photos (but you can select which photos to send).
