Monterey Bay Aquarium "Sea Notes" June 2005
Welcome to Sea Notes, your monthly email update from the Monterey Bay Aquarium.

1. EXHIBIT NEWS: OCEAN'S EDGE TO OPEN; FLOWER HAT JELLIES RETURN
Be the first to see our new Ocean's Edge galleries when they open
to the public on Friday, May 27. The renovated galleries are more
immersive, with exhibits that show how people are part of the
solution when it comes to ocean conservation. You'll find new
exhibits for such favorite animals as the giant octopus, tube
anemones and bat rays, plus some new animals as well--sheep
crabs, skeleton shrimp and ruddy ducks.

Exotic flower hat jellies are back in Jellies: Living Art. These
beautiful jellies are only found in waters off southern Japan
during summer months for a short time. Our innovative jelly
aquarists have succeeded in culturing this unusual species
through two stages of its entire life cycle, but the rest still
remains a mystery.

Visit What's New on our web site to learn about these and other
new arrivals in our exhibits.

2. BEHIND THE SCENES: THE ART OF OCEAN'S EDGE
Live animals are the stars of our exhibits. But look closely next
time you visit at the artwork that brings the galleries alive.

Two artists working in different media have created displays to
help immerse visitors in Ocean's Edge. Muralist David Rock
painted rich animal colonies and large coastal scenes working in
acrylic. Amy Herbig captured the tiniest details of marine
creatures in life-sized bronze works. You'll see their creations
when Ocean's Edge opens on May 27.

David works almost exclusively for zoos, aquariums and museums,
and says he likes the challenge of painting things that live
underwater. The wharf pilings in Ocean's Edge presented an
unusual challenge because of the level of detail and the curved
surface of the pilings.

For Amy, the bronzes in Ocean's Edge presented a new and welcome
challenge. Using the lost-wax process, she first created clay
sculptures that ultimately were turned into casts for bronze
models of everything from sea cucumbers and scallops to an
octopus tentacle.

She hopes people will gain a greater appreciation for the
richness and detail of animals like the giant octopus when they
touch her creations. "I hope it makes them pause and look
closely," she says.

3. PROMOTIONS & EVENTS: OCEAN'S EDGE CELEBRATION; AQUARIUM
ADVENTURES; JAZZ AT THE AQUARIUM; MBARI OPEN HOUSE; 'JAWS' 30TH
ANNIVERSARY SCREENINGS

Ocean's Edge Celebration, June 4-5, Saturday-Sunday
Come to our weekend beach party as we celebrate the debut of our
new Ocean's Edge galleries. Activities include auditorium
programs, a surf movie, live music, prize giveaways, a craft
room and special guests.

Aquarium Adventures Summer Programs, June 18-Sept. 5
Have you had an adventure yet? Summer at the aquarium means our
Aquarium Adventures programs are underway. Popular programs
returning this year are Underwater Explorers kids' SCUBA
adventure, Science Under Sail excursions on Monterey Bay, behind
the scenes feeding tours, and a new program just for families
with children ages 3 to 9, Aquarium Detectives.

"Jazz at the Aquarium," June 18, Saturday
Our premiere musical event, presented annually by the aquarium
and the Kuumbwa Jazz Center, features live jazz in our exhibit
galleries. This year's headliners are renowned jazz pianist Bill
Charlap, who brings his trio to perform, and vocalist Maria
Muldaur.

MBARI Open House, June 25, Saturday
The Monterey Bay Aquarium Research Institute (MBARI) is holding
its annual open house from 12 to 5 p.m. All three research ships
are available for tours and remotely operated vehicles (ROVs)
are on display. MBARI scientists and engineers will also be on
hand conducting special lectures, interpreting educational
displays and sharing their passion about their research. Get
more details about the open house:

"Jaws" Screening, July 8-9-10, Friday through Sunday
White Shark Benefit Reception, July 9, Saturday
Thirty years ago, Steven Spielberg's "Jaws" became the first
true summer blockbuster and fixed in the public imagination the
image of white sharks as marauding killers. We'll revisit the
celebrated film and offer the other side of the story. You can
see one of several weekend screenings at the Golden State
Theater, and (for aquarium members) attend a wine and hors
d'oeuvres reception at the theater benefiting our white shark
project and the Monterey County Film Commission. The reception
includes a presentation with behind-the-scenes stories, photos
and video about the white shark project.

We offer special promotions, family events and savings throughout
the year.

4. CONSERVATION IN ACTION: WHITE SHARK TAG DATA
Data from the electronic tag attached to the young white shark we
released on March 31 shows that she traveled offshore more than
100 miles and to depths of over 800 feet. More importantly, the
data show she was swimming strongly and feeding during her first
month back in the wild.

"It's clear she survived and thrived after release," said Dr.
Randy Kochevar, a marine biologist with the aquarium and a
principal investigator with the Tagging of Pacific Pelagics
(TOPP) project--a research collaboration that maps the migrations
of many open-ocean species in the northern Pacific. "There's no
question that she was hunting and feeding on her own."

The electronic tag, recovered on May 5 west of Point Arguello
near Santa Barbara, logged the white shark's movements along the
coast, the water temperatures she favored and the depths she
reached for 30 days after her release near Point Pinos at the
southern tip of Monterey Bay. The young shark spent a record 198
days at the aquarium prior to her release.
