View Full Version : Does anyone have XM radio?
Leash 05-11-2005, 06:59 PM My mom and are are thinking of getting XM radio because she wants to be able to listen to all the Cubs games on the radio and I am in my car all the time and I would like some good music to listen to. XM is doing a buy one get one free thing on recievers right now so we want to do it but I just wondered if anyone has it and what they think about it?
Andrew 05-11-2005, 07:08 PM I considered buying one (http://mousepad.mouseplanet.com/showthread.php?t=38534) a few months ago but haven't done so (yet).

Thanks for the info! I think we will be getting them, my boyfriend wants to get one now too, and we will sign up for the family plan which will make it about $9 a month per person and since we can get a free reciever when we buy one we will probably buy 2 get a free one and then split the cost 3 ways for the recievers so like $60 for each reciever. I was looking at the MyFi but I just can't justify the cost, make car payment or buy new toy hmmm..??
Keep in mind that there are two subscription-radio services, XM and Sirius.
Although many of the programming services are similar on both services, there are some differences between them. Howard Stern is going to be on Sirius when his Infinity contract expires. Air America is on XM, as are Opie and Anthony and Playboy Radio.
Look into what each offers before committing to one.

JeffG 05-12-2005, 07:59 AM Both XM and Sirius offer most of their stations as streaming audio via the web and both offer free trials that give you a few days to try them out. I'd highly recommend signing up for the trial for each (probably one at a time, rather than simultaneously) in order to get a good idea of what they have to offer.
I actually tried both and decided to pass on them for now because neither one really had musical stations that fit my tastes well. I have fairly unusual tastes, though, and I suspect most people will be more apt to find one or both services to their liking.

GusMan 05-12-2005, 12:35 PM I have XM and will not look back. But you know its bad when you have to pay for radio because your local off the air stations stink that bad.

I have now had XM for almost three years. Now that XM recently raised it's monthly price and included some of the premium services there is not much difference to both services unless you are looking for sports - then closely check what each has.
XM offers many great stations from movie music, Broadway music, sonic theater (old time radio story shows like Twilight Zone and newer stuff also), acid jazz, top 20 with free voting, and on...
I have not listened to FM since the day I installed XM in the Jeep Wrangler!
slydini 05-13-2005, 06:49 AM I have had XM radio for about three years now. I love it! The reason I went with XM was the Broadway station. There was a time that was all I listened to. Then I started branching out. The thing about XM and Sirius I would assume, is that you get exposed to a wide variety of music and talk shows. The one thing XM has that Sirius does not is MLB. I belive Sirius has NHL though. I am more interested in MLB. Not only do I have xm in my car, but I bpught a boombox ersion for our Apartment.

FYI, my main issue with XM was the movie music station. My musical tastes very heavily favor film scores and I really didn't care for their station featuring that genre at all. They seemed to be under the odd impression that film score enthusiasts would want a station that frequently interrupted the music for dialog excerpts.

It's the varity on that station that I love so much. You get to hear just a bit of the dialog... who doesn't want to hear "A king's time as ruler rises and falls like the sun. One day Simba, the sun will set on my time here- and will rise with you as the new king" as Mufasa speaks it The Lion King???
How about all the great lines from Star Wars like my Yoda quote in my signature below? This stuff is all classic!
I would find no reason to listen to channel 27 Cinamagic if it were not for the varity of stuff they play.
SoCalDude 05-20-2005, 12:59 AM XM seems pretty cool - and AFIK they have the Disney Station on it? But if it is the same as the AM then I would not listen to it lol.
BUT if you are a cell-phone geek like me (my mpx220 smartphone ROCKS) you will be happy to hear this:
NEW YORK (Reuters) - XM Satellite Radio is holding active discussions with wireless carriers about offering some form of its radio service on mobile phones, XM chief executive Hugh Panero said on Monday.
whoooo-hoooooo! As a person who uses his phone as a MP3 player and watches movies on my phone (even have some cool stero headphones - told ya I was a cell phone geek) this is really cool news.

Radio Disney is the same syndicated station that broadcasts all across the country. The big difference is that the sound quality is better. (Not a mono AM station.) We listen to it quite a bit when the kids are in the car.
The funny part is that from an "adult" perspective, it seems like they have a 50-song songlist. Of course, they tend to favor anyone that is on Disney's payroll. (Hillary Duff, Aly and AJ, Jessie McCartney, and the like.) The good news is that they do censor songs (by using different versions) that may contain even mild language or themes. I applaud that since their main audience is the younger, pre/young teen community.
Andrew 05-20-2005, 10:13 AM Heard this morning: XM is running a new promotion whereby you buy one receiver and activate it with a credit card, and get a second receiver free. The fine print is important on this offer, so check it out here: http://www.xmradio.com/doubleplay/index.jsp
