View Full Version : 'Mark as Read' request

Hey all!
I've asked before and was told a workaround, but it didn't work. :(
The problem: If I linger on a post for too long, my "Last Visit" time is reset, thus makring all posts as read!
The workaround: Leave a 'Buddies' window open. Didn't work. I just lost tracking on 5 days of unread posts!
Can we please, PLEASE, have a manual marking option?!?!? This is getting real annoying!
IIRC, you had said that it is a software limitation ... if that's true, can someone please request of the S/W people to add the option in the next version of the code? Cuz, you know, sometimes I only have time to read a single board and want to leave the others unread.

Thanks, but don't count me too lucky. You see 4 weeks ago, a box at my house tried to introduce my little toe to my ankle. Needless to say, that meeting did not go well and ended in 2 fractures! Then last week, while recovering from a 24 hour stomach flu, I threw my back out. I swear ... all I was doing was standing up from flushing the toilet!
Now, to anticipate possible responses to this:
1. Yes, it's all true. (AVP can vouch for it ... had to cancel going to her birthday dinner because of the stomach flu. :( ) I just can't make this up!
2. Thank you, but I'm not looking for sympathy. Just don't be too jealous of my 'luck'. :p
3. Yes. Because of my back, my toe does *NOT* hurt! :p

The "buddy list" trick always works for me. (Thanks, Mox!) Is it not working for anyone else, or anyone know why it might not be working for corwin?
Steve,
Trust me on this one - if there were a way that I could get the whining and complaining to stop by getting the folks at vB to fix this, I would have YEARS ago.
They know it's an issue. They know we all hate it. They know we want it fixed.
They apparently have other priorities.

<grumble ... grumble>OK, fine. I'll stop my whining ... for the moment. :p
It just gets downright frustrating to be *FORCED* to catch up on *ALL* the boards at one sitting.
Maybe in the next 'request' to vB you could include a reminder that even ezBoards has this feature?!?!

This I will heartily agree with.

Yeah, but with ezboard, you don't have the handy-dandy Go To New Post button that vBulletin offers. I find that waaaay more useful than the Last Visit Time non-feature.
Plus, ezboard repeatedly logs you out if you post at a different message board then go to post at a new one. Not to mention that the larger boards can be incredibly slow because ezboard groups many of their boards onto one server (which they are always doing "maintenance" work on).
I'm happy with vBulletin!
Hey Steve -
You're new-ish here, so I'll cut you some slack. Did you notice that sign behind you? The one that said "Touchy subject ahead, proceed at your own risk?" Yeah, that one. Notice the skull-and-crossbones and the flashing light? They were put there to warn people away.
They next sign you'll see says "Abandon hope all ye who enter here." In other words: "We hear you, it's out of our control, go away." :p

In other words: "We hear you, it's out of our control, go away." :p Fine. Be that way. See if I care. I will go away ... in about 22 hours! :p But, I'll be back! :~D

I'm happy with vBulletin! To be clear (because I wasn't before) ... I am *NOT* saying ezBoards is better ... just that they have an *EXTREMELY* useful feature that vB doesn't have. I agree that the 'auto log-out' bug is annoying over there.
And besides .. .the 'New Post' only works if your 'Last Visit' time hasn't been updated while you were ... oh ... say .... taking a potty break! :p

What is this "buddy" trick? How do I do it? Where is the "buddies" window? I guess no one wants to be my buddy. :(

At the top of the screen, click "Quick Links" then "Open Buddy List"
It may work even if you haven't set up a buddy list. The Buddy List window refreshes every few minutes, which keeps you from losing your session with the Pad, and so your cookies don't get reset even if you haven't loaded a new page in a while.

Maybe you need to add someone to your buddy list for it to work. Open up anybody's profile, and there should be a link on the dark orange bar near the top to add that person to your buddy list. Then try it again.

Nope, not necessary. I don't have anyone on my buddy list, and the "trick" works fine for me.
