Cystic Fibrosis GREAT STRIDES Walk on May 7th
In cities all across the United States, thousands of people show their commitment to "adding tomorrows every day" to the lives of those with cystic fibrosis through the simple act of walking together. Year after year, volunteers make every Great Strides walk site both fun and successful. Their dedication has helped Great Strides become one of the country's most effective and efficient fund-raising efforts. Since the first Great Strides walk in 1989, more than $150 million has been raised to support the vital research and care programs of the Cystic Fibrosis Foundation.

On May 7, 2005, Bonfante Gardens will partner with the Cystic Fibrosis Foundation for the second annual Great Strides Walk inside the theme park. Cystic fibrosis is a life-threatening genetic disease that affects the lungs and digestive system. By participating in this walk, guests will help in the efforts of finding a cure for cystic fibrosis. Participants receive a continental breakfast and complimentary admission to Bonfante Gardens valid the day of the walk. For more information on how to participate, visit www.cff.org/great_strides (http://www.cff.org/great_strides?utm_source=park-newsletter&utm_medium=email&utm_campaign=Issue-05-04-20&utm_content=premium-edition) or call (408) 723-3525.

Docent Talks - The Ranunculus
Ranunculus asiaticus, commonly called Persian Buttercup or Turban Ranunculus can be seen throughout the park. Petals are delicate tissue-like and tightly formed, resembling a peony. Ranunculus is grown from tuberous roots and is hardy to 10 ° F. It is best planted in the fall for winter/spring/early summer bloom. This lovely flower loves sunshine, so be sure to plant it in full sun or partial shade. Watch out for those birds! They love tender Ranunculus shoots. Select the largest tuberous roots (Tecolote strain often called jumbo) that will produce the largest blooms. If you are planting from tubers in your garden, it is best to cover the area with netting to protect the emerging shoots from the birds. When plants reach about 6" high, you can remove the netting. You will be rewarded with profuse blooms in white, cream, yellow, orange, red and pink that last six weeks. As a cut flower, Ranunculus will last at least seven days, drawing water up through its hollow stem.

Take a photo of your Ranunculus in bloom so you will know where to replant the tubers in the fall. After flowering, leaves will turn yellow and the foliage will die back. It is best to dig up the tuberous roots and store them in a cool (50-55 ° F), dry place until the next fall. Before replanting, you may soak the roots for about 30 minutes. Don't soak them longer or they might turn to mush! Replant when soil temperatures drop to 60 ° F and enjoy these gorgeous blooms a second year. You may choose to fertilize at the time of planting. Once your hole has been dug, drop in one rounded teaspoon of bone meal, a good source of phosphorus that encourages root development and flowering. Finally, add the plant and a tablespoon of a sulfur-coated, slow-release complete fertilizer.

There is a myth attached to the Ranunculus. Once upon a time, an Asian prince was extremely good looking and had a beautiful singing voice. He sang his delightful songs to the nymphs, but never had the courage to declare his love to them. He became so discouraged that he languished and died. After dying, he was changed into the beautiful flower that bears his name. The Latin name of this flower means "Little Frog" because of the shape of its leaves. In mythology, frogs were able to change into princes and it is said that the prince's beautiful voice didn't change the frog's croak!

In flower language, the Ranunculus means, "you are rich in attractions."
