View Full Version : Australia Disney?
Brer Tiff 04-08-2005, 02:33 PM Has anyone ever heard if Disney has ever considered building a theme park in Australia? I lived there for awhile and I know it would do very well, a lot better than EuroDisney/Disney France. Just wondering. It seems like such a great idea. I knew so many Aussies that wanted to take their kids so bad, but the cost was phenomenal. Whoops posted this in the wrong area, sorry.
Disney Vault 04-08-2005, 02:51 PM There have been many rumored locations for disney parks. I believe the next place people are talking about is in South Korea. Which I think is a huge mistake and I hope they never follow through with that one. I would think a park in Australia would be fine as long as they don't go cheap (Like Hong Kong DL).

I really don't think S. Korea is that big of a mistake seeing as how they have 3 of the top 50 most attended theme parks in the world and one that I believe is #6.
Disney Vault 04-08-2005, 03:40 PM They want it to be a mini disneyland in South Korea. Smaller than the one they are building in Hong Kong. Now that just sounds stupid to me. So if they can't do it right, don't do it at all.
Aussie MouseFan 04-08-2005, 04:20 PM News is (around here anyway) Disney execs were around here a few weeks back looking at sites on the fringe of Sydney.
Whilst I would love that, DLR is still the Mouse House
pa-mom2twins 04-08-2005, 10:21 PM Having been to Australia and New Zealand a few times, I just can't see the population and location justifying a Disney Park. Only the Kiwi's would be close enough to come for a holiday (and perhaps a few from Indonesia) and the small population of Australia is spread around the ocean borders with there being little population in the middle - it's virtually unliveable. I just don't see this working out for Disney. I think Disney Australia would be the worst choice ever!
Aussie MouseFan 04-08-2005, 10:31 PM It could work, but that would only be if Tokyo & HK Disney werent a reality...
One of the biggest theme parks in Aus closed down only last year due to outrageous insurance costs and other factors. Given the way things are, it would not work unless the above was true.
However, there were a bunch of execs over here, and they were doing a lot of looking, maybe not for a DLR style park, who knows, maybe something unique??? The few media pieces on the visits didnt give much away other than they were here.
Disney Vault 04-08-2005, 10:57 PM I bet Disney could set up a cool cruise there.

I heard that Wonderland had closed. I was really shocked. I just think Aussie and American culture are very similar and a park would do well because of that. I lived there for over a year and I really loved it there. If Disney would have done a little research into European/in particular French culture they would have realized what a big mistake EuroDisney was, instead of trying to fix the problems after they built it. Good on ya' for being a Disney fan and an Australian. :)
TempoNZ 04-09-2005, 12:28 AM Wonderland was very rundown and certianly not even close to a Disneyland or even Knott Farm for that matter. The Gold Coast on the other hand is already supporting 2 theme[arks, a Seaworld and a waterpark and they seem to be doing pretty well.
I could see Disney doing well in Australia (I'd certainly make the 3 hour flight to go) however I am a little worred that more parks you have the less special the Disney experiance becomes.
Aussie MouseFan 04-09-2005, 01:57 AM It must be noted that the theme parks on the Gold Coast are struggling...
numbers are down, and costs increasing, however they arent to the point of closing just yet, and I pray it doesnt come to that.
Wonderland was rundown and poorly managed, and it would never come close to the Magic of DL...
Being a Disney addict, and having visted DLR every year at least once or twice since 1989, nothing could ever replace the magic found after walking through those gates...
A cruise would be great, but I think some type of animal reserve would be an excellent addition to the Disney portfolio, imagine Disneys Animal Kingdom, and make it ten times bigger and grander.... its not like we dont have the room for something like that...
kadiehl 04-09-2005, 06:39 AM I like the idea of a much grander Animal Kingdom sort of park in Australia. Australia is honestly one of the only places I would like to travel to. I am not into traveling much except to a few select places but Australia is on my wish list.
I would definitely make the jaunt from the US to Australia to sight see and to see a Disney-Australia park. :)

That would very cool.

Maybe the next generation of "Adventures by Disney" tours?
Edit: I moved this over to Parks General because it really isn't a WDW topic. :)

The only news I have heard is that the next park they are seriously considering building will be right by a new Universal Studios and will not be in the USA. I am in Finance but I am fairly low on the totem pole so I will keep everyone updated as I know what is going on. Remember too that anything right now is *just* talk and nothing is every definate- as we all remember what happened in PA :)
