Ok, I know this was discussed in another thread, but can someone please clue me in more about the "Hi, We're <insert names here>!" signs that people put on their stateroom doors?
How did the tradition get started?
What purpose does it serve?
Will strange people knock on our door because of it?
What do they look like, and do we just bring regular "fridge" magnets to hang them?
My honey and family are drilling me for more info, since I want to make 'em! :D

I'm not sure where the tradition started. I first noticed it on our first Disney cruise a few years ago, and noticed that they were a lot more prevelant last fall on the 7-night trip we took. This is one someone is doing for the 14-night repositioning that we are on. http://www.tiggerfan.net/canal/door2.html. I am also attaching ours to the post (slightly modified version).
It basically is designed to try and have some fun, and make it a little more personal. People don't knock because of it - but I have seen stateroom neighbors call each other by name because of it.
As for making them, You can use magnets to hold them on, but I think there is a good chance that they could get knocked off. It is actually easier to buy this paper (http://www.staples.com/Catalog/Browse/sku.asp?PageType=1&SKU=46771)which you can print on using a jet ink printer. The entire sheet is magnetic, and because it is flush with the door, it won't knock off easily.
Several people have also done smaller items (like Mickey silhouettes) with their names on them to put around the doors.
Kids like them, especially little ones, because it lets them find their room easily. (As we were walking the halls, we would see families where little kids would run ahead and look for their room - using the signs to find it).

you know what would be a good idea?? is if you go to home depot and get those mickey mouse paint chips, cut the excess white card stock off of them and run the paint chips through an xyron machine that has the magnatic sticky (machine is not that expensice, neither are the magnatic sheets, wal-mart has them in the sb isle.) and everyone will have their own color! don't forget to write their names on it or run it through your printer with a really cool font, you can find the disney fonts at various websites, or contact me and I will e-mail the site to you. good luck, oh also one more tip, if you don't want to buy the xyron machine, take them to your local scrapbook store and ask them to do it for you, they will charge you a small fee for it though.
good luck
