Monterey Bay Aquarium "Sea Notes" April 2005

Welcome to Sea Notes, your monthly email update from the Monterey
Bay Aquarium

1. EXHIBIT NEWS: MARINE MAMMAL STATION, ART INSTALLATION, WHITE SHARK
Our Marine Mammal Discovery Station has a new look and a new
location. It's been outfitted with a video screen, where the
volunteer guide can show you beautiful clips of marine mammals
and some of the behaviors that help them survive in the wild.
You'll find it near the sea otter exhibit, close to the main Gift
and Bookstore.

Artist Lisa Esherick's whimsical paintings depicting the magic
and "theatre" of a visit to the aquarium are on display through
April 4. You can find "People Looking at Fish Looking at People
Looking," a series of three large paintings, near the Kelp
Forest exhibit.

You can follow weekly updates on the white shark; visit our white
shark research page for more details.

4. CONSERVATION IN ACTION: TAGGING OF PACIFIC PELAGICS (TOPP)
ONLINE
Blue whales, pink-footed shearwaters and yellowfin tuna have more
in common than colorful names; all belong to a multi-species
spectrum of animals being fitted with high-tech data collecting
devices as part of a cutting-edge research program, Tagging of
Pacific Pelagics (TOPP).

A partnership between the Monterey Bay Aquarium, Hopkins Marine
Laboratory (Stanford University) and Long Marine Laboratory
(University of California, Santa Cruz), TOPP explores the
northeastern Pacific's ecosystems from the perspective of its
inhabitants. The sophisticated TOPP tags allow individuals from
22 species of marine predators to become "oceanographers" that
sample their ocean habitat while moving in it. TOPP scientists
tag a variety of vertebrate species including fishes, sharks,
whales, pinnipeds, seabirds, sea turtles, as well as one large
invertebrate, the Humboldt squid.

TOPP's education and outreach team is building a new web site
where you can learn more about the project and follow the
wanderings of several species throughout the Pacific. Like the
scientists, you can discover key migration corridors and where
these animals feed and breed. The new web site launches in April,
in
time for Earth Day.
