View Full Version : Travel strollers
Oingofan 03-15-2005, 03:03 PM I searched and found a good thread from last year about the types of strollers everyone is using in DLR, but I can't find any of those strollers now (except for Ebay). So, what strollers are you using for 2005? :) I don't want an expensive one (not over $100), but would like one that folds up like an umbrella stroller, has a canopy, and reclines flat for naps.
Appreciate all responses! Thx! ;)
Sebastian 03-16-2005, 07:32 PM This is what we use and we actually purchased it from Babies'RUS a couple of years ago and it is the only stroller we will ever use again. They are very light but really sturdy and have lots of room for storage in the bottom. They also recline and have a sun visor and the front bar is removable for an older child.

It is made by Graco and is called the Citi Lite .
Wendi 03-16-2005, 09:08 PM I've got a Combi Ultra Savvy and I really love it. Max is nearly 3-1/2 and nearly 40 pounds, so I needed something that would hold a larger child, but not add a lot of weight to push. This stroller is very light, folds up small, has a fully reclining seat, canopy, basket, tall enough handle for me, and it maneuvers easily. It also has the "perfect match" system so it will hold just about any infant seat so you can use it as a travel system if you have an infant (they include a cover so it will match the stroller too), the canopy has speakers, so Max can listen to his CD player while he rides. It has a carrying strap so I can sling it over my shoulder and carry it easily if I need to.
It's normally run around $300, but you may find a good discount and get one for under $100 - rare, but I did it when I bought mine!
hersheythecat 03-17-2005, 06:34 AM I was able to find an Eddie Bauer stroller at Target recently on clearance and it has been our favorite stroller so far at WDW. It is also the third one to make the trip. It was soo light. Would close up in a standing position with one hand action and had a large basket for all the goodies. The kids fought over who was going to ride in it. We took that stroller and a jeep umbrella stroller (2 kids).

My lightest/smallest stroller had an accident with my van. (I can't take the "credit"- I was out of town and Doc had the kids... )
Is this the Aluminum Eddie Bauer? I saw it advertised at Babies R Us this month on special? I was worried that it wouldn't handle an older kid becuase my middle son is already 40 lbs (he's almost 4). Your report sounds encouraging!

justlittleoldme 03-18-2005, 09:12 AM Try a Combi Savy Soho Sport: http://www.dmart2000.com/dmart2/cosasosplist.html
Its under $100, folds small, seems lightweight. I use a Graco Duoglider, seeing I have two that nap during the day. Good luck hunting!
adriennek 03-18-2005, 10:06 AM OHMYGOSH! That looks a LOT like the stroller that I'm replacing!
Here's my deal: that stroller was the worst stroller I ever bought. It was an Aprica and was an overpriced piece of doggie doo-doo. It was TOO lightweight. Hard to "handle".
I've heard a lot of people love their Combi's. Anyone have this one? I'm on a mission to check it out! Thank you so much for the suggestion!

The Soho? If that's what you're asking about I saw it online a lot and thought it would be perfect!!! Luckily I decided to check it out in person before ordering one and it was way too small for Max. His head was already over the seatback, so he wouldn't have been able to nap in it.
My next choice was the Chicco Londoner (I think that's the name), but I kept reading reviews of the rivets falling out and the stroller would basically just crumble! They have since replaced that model with a new one, which looks really nice - and simple... I would consider that if it doesn't have the same rivet problem because the stoller was nice and roomy and easy to handle... smooth ride!

If you truly want to know more about strollers, check out these websites:
Strollerswap Yahoogroup (http://groups.yahoo.com/group/StrollerSWAP/)
BabyBargains Stroller Forum (http://www.windsorpeak.com/dc/dcboard.php?az=show_topics&forum=14)
I'm sure if you post a question about Combis on either site, you'll get good info. I'm currently lusting for a Combi Twin Savvy, but alas, I can't justify the purchase anymore...
HTH!
Oingofan 03-20-2005, 09:55 AM Thank you very much for the recommendations and comments! I appreciate it! :)
adriennek 03-20-2005, 04:42 PM Ok, I have made a purchase that I am MUY happy about!
Today we went to Babies R Us. We looked at the Combi Soho. It was nice enough but there was a lot of fabric to wade through to figure out how to adjust the reclining part. There's also a support bar that passes through the middle of the basket- you couldn't get into the basket when the child is in the stroller, either.
I liked it, ok but the Maclaren Triumph (http://www.maclarenbaby.com/US/pages/triumph.html) next to it on the shelf was calling my name: Test drive me! Test drive me!
Heaven on Earth. It's a 2004 model, not the 2005. When we got home, we found the navy version online at many online retailers. Clicking around we found coupons that expire March 31. Out the door with shipping we paid $123.95 for it at Babyuniverse.com (http://www.babyuniverse.com). Babies R Us and Target have them for $140, but not the navy version (not that we saw anyway. I prefer a darker color that won't show dirt as easily.)
We were turning 360's with 40 lb Spencer in the seat- one handed! VERY easy to handle!
The sign a BRU says this stroller goes to 55 lb. Definitely a good investment! The basket is hard to get into when the seat is reclining but when I said, "Spencer, sit up," I could get in it very easily.
The mechanics were rather easy to figure out and it folds down to NOTHING, with a STRAP to carry it over your shoulder.
The small size, the 55 lb upper weight limit, the sturdiness, the Maclaren reputation and the bargain I got at BabyUniverse, I expect this stroller to be worth every penny. Spencer's godmother has a Maclaren and I've always heard fantastic things about them.
I'm SOOOO excited! This stroller will stay in my van at all times. The compact size will make it very easy to be my "around town" stroller but I know it will be great for folding up and carrying it on trams at DLR if I have to, and sturdy enough to use in the parks.
:D And I don't even HAVE it yet. (If it fails me I'm going to sob!)

Pleaseeeeee post after you receive it...I'm dying to get one, but having trouble justifying it...I already have a Peg Perego Venezia (which I LOVE) for long day trips, and a Combi Soho (which I HATE) for quick mall trips etc...wish I would have gotten the Maclaren when I bought the Combi.
I have stroller envy

Yeah, I hate to tell you this: I LOVE IT.
It came yesterday and I used it today at the mall to go to, of all places, the Disney store.
1- It is so lightweight. SO lightweight. Very sturdy, but LIGHT. This is a good thing but it's going to take some getting used to!
2- Brake goes on and off easily.
3- I really am having to 'learn' how to open and close it. It's not difficult, just takes some getting used to. Closing has been a little harder. There's a lever I have to push with my foot and I want to be "delicate" because I don't want to hurt my "lightweight" stroller but it really requires a good shove to get it to go down. This is good. I don't want it to collapse while a child is in it!
4- Love the handles. This is the first stroller I've had with two separate handles. My others have all had "bars". I slid my purse over one handle and when I needed it in the store, it was soooo easy to pull it off. This could be a bad thing if you're worried about your purse being stolen, so don't leave a purse on the handle unattended!
5- It came with a cute "raincover" that is very easy to put on and take off.
6- SOOOO easy to steer and maneuver. SO easy. Amazingly easy. It glides.
7- I'm happy with the navy print. I don't like light colored prints on strollers- dirt magnets.
8- 5-point harness was easy to do and undo. My baby is in a phase where he wants to crawl out of strollers and high chairs so the shoulder harnesses were critical. It seems most strollers have them these days but it's nice that these are easy to use.
I haven't used the basket yet, so I can't comment on that.

wwithers 03-30-2005, 09:38 PM Love my Peg Pergo. Lightweight, folds one handed, doesn't tip (even when you load up the handles), adjustable handles, reclines completely, has standing room for another child. I can't say enough good things about this stroller.
We still take it when we travel even though Olivia's almost 5. You can load it up with all of your packages and carryons.

We have a Peg Perego (Pliko) too! We've used this stroller the last several times we've been to Disneyland and it's been very convenient. My 4 year old DD has been standing on the back step and my 2 year old sits in the stroller.
The only drawback I'm finding lately is that my 4 year old DD starts to get tired of standing on the back step towards the end our day in the park. After standing in the various lines for rides, walking all around the park and then having to stand on the stroller, I can see how she's getting tired. We're now looking to get a SBS stroller to take instead, so she has the option of sitting and resting (conserving energy).
I think we've decided on the Maclaren Twin Traveller. Initially, I wanted the Combi Twin Savvy, but after trying it out, it's too flimsy for my taste. The Maclaren was surprisingly sturdy. Their Twin Traveller also has a upper weight limit of 55 lbs for each seat and that's a big plus for us!
dsnyredhead 03-31-2005, 11:38 AM Adrienne, are the handles on the stroller you bought sturdy enough to hold backpack diaper bags? ( the Eagle Creek bag:) )
We've had the same stroller for over a year now and I'd like to get something in the coming future. I have one umbrella stroller but there is no basket under it so I'd like something with that feature.
adriennek 03-31-2005, 11:49 AM Adrienne, are the handles on the stroller you bought sturdy enough to hold backpack diaper bags? ( the Eagle Creek bag:) )
They are but the stroller is REALLY light. So hanging my purse when the baby was in it isn't a problem but when the stroller's empty, with the diaper bag it is going to tip!
That said, when the baby's out of the stroller, I'd just plop my Eagle Creek bag (what can I say? They rock) around and plop it on the front side of the stroller instead of the back.

dsnyredhead 03-31-2005, 11:54 AM Thanks. I figure that's the case with any lightweight or umbrella type stroller but I thought I'd ask.
WITron 04-20-2005, 11:43 PM We are going to DL in Dec. and are looking for a dual stroller for our girls ages 3 and 5 months. We have been looking at the Sit N Stand stroller and also just a double stroller. The other option for us is to rent a double stroller at the park, since we will be lugging alot half way across country. Any input would be greatly appreciated.
adriennek 04-20-2005, 11:56 PM The other option for us is to rent a double stroller at the park, since we will be lugging alot half way across country. Any input would be greatly appreciated.
This is not an option at DLR. They don't have any double strollers to rent. You'd be renting two separate single strollers. Is your younger daughter 5 months now or will be in December?
Personally, I think the rental strollers aren't all that great. I'm biased against them, but especially for babies.
As for my input about double strollers: I swear by my Peg Perego Tender. It's a tandem stroller. I love it. We've had it now for 4 years and it's held up well. Even when we didn't know for sure if our older son would 'need' it, it was great to use for the extra space in the back seat. (Especially when my mom and I hit the malls for a marathon shopping trip  )
I'm a stuff hauler. I loved having my stroller gate checked so I could haul stuff (and/or kids) through airports with it. So that's another bias I have.

We still travel with our stroller just for this reason.
MommyTo2Boys1Girl 04-23-2005, 01:43 PM I just sold an Evenflo Featherlight Plus on eBay for $50! It was in excellent condition and light as a feather, we bought it specifically for DL when my first son was 13 months. I just have too many strollers.
My Graco DuoGlider is the one I use now, while it is home, I love all the room and both kids recline.
I do have a Peg Perego Pliko P3 that I use when I just need one child restrained. It is very light weight and folds up pretty small, but over $100.
Matt Hamand 05-20-2005, 08:59 PM I just wanted to thank adriennek for the Maclaren Triumph recommendation. After doing a little bit more research I bought one last week.
$129 for a carbon colored 2004 model. I didn't like any of the 2005 colors and the new models actually weigh more.
To try out the stroller I took Adam to the San Diego Zoo (http://matthamand.blogspot.com/2005/05/world-famous.html). The stroller worked amazing. So light and maneuverable. Handles the right height for a tallish guy. Smooth ride.
The only real problem was the sunshade. When you turn into the sun the baby gets kind of flashed. But I threw a blanket over the top when he was asleep and no worries.
Also, since Adam is one month under the recommended age, I had to get a head rest to snap on around the shoulder straps. That worked fine and the headrest even folds down with the stroller.
All in all I couldn't be happier. On June 11 we'll see how the stroller handles DLR.
Grendel's Mother 05-21-2005, 03:28 PM I just bought this one at Toys R Us. It has a tray and cupholder for the child, as well as a cupholder for me. The cupholder is actually big enough for a fairly large drink, unlike the cupholders on some other strollers I have looked at. It also has a canopy and folds up pretty small.
The regular price is $39.99, but Toys R Us is having a sale right now, so you get $15 off, which makes it an unbelievable deal at $25!!
Note: I called my Toys R Us ahead of time to see if they had this in stock and if it was on sale. I was told that it was not on sale because the stroller had to be $40 or more to get the $15 off and this one lists at $39.99. I decided to buy it anyway, but when I checked out, I was given the sale price. So evidently their registers count $39.99 as $40!
Since we will be at DLR for 4 days, that means the $25 I spent on this stroller is actually less than it would have cost me to rent a stroller for 4 days!

dsnyredhead 05-22-2005, 10:08 AM I purchased the Kolcraft Lite XT and am pretty happy about it so far. It was about $40 at Sears.
