View Full Version : Driving to WDW vs. flying the day before the marathon?

Hi all. the 1/2 marathon will be a first for me. I have a question. In terms of how I will feel come Sat. morning....would I be putting myself at a disadvantage by driving down? I'd be arriving sometime on Friday mid day or so. If I fly - I'd be there mid morning or so.

What do you think?

Hey ericles! Congrats on registering for the half!

Based on a quick check on Mapquest, you're looking at just shy of 1,000 miles, yes? That's an awful lot of driving to do, so here are a couple of thoughts to mull over:

- You might want to take a little bit of extra time in your drive to take breaks, and make sure you do some stretches each time. 1,000 miles is an awful long time to be sitting still for hours on end.

- Don't forget if you drive down, you'll have to drive back up, too. Do you think you'll be up to it?

If you can find good airfare, my suggestion is that you go ahead and fly. I don't think the issue is so much your driving DOWN, but how your legs will hold up on your drive home. You'll be tired from the half-marathon, and your legs won't be up to just sitting still for so long without cramping and tightening up.

That's my opinion.

I wasn't thinking (big surprise)

Yeah - we've got about 14 1/2 hours of driving. As for the going back....we are actually planning on staying at WDW for the entire week after the 1/2marathon....

Oh God am I gonna be crawling my thru the World during the week???

Oh God am I gonna be crawling my thru the World during the week??? :confused:How you do on Sunday and Monday after the half-marathon depends greatly on this combination:

1. How well you are trained
2. How much you push yourself during the event

If you do a couple of half-marathons before January or you do longer distances and you train well, you won't be nearly as sore afterwards.

If you try to go noticeably faster than your regular training pace, you are likely to be more sore/stiff afterwards.

I would suggest you take it easy on Sunday, maybe take in a massage or something. Don't do too much walking on Sunday. Then on Monday, do some stretches, and hobble around and enjoy the parks.

If you're going to drive, I HIGHLY suggest getting there a day before you plan to already. Give your legs a chance to stretch a little after that long drive.
