View Full Version : March accountability...
TrekkieDad 03-09-2005, 08:21 PM and I will have ridden 1000 miles so far this year. I knew I was getting close to 1000, so I added them all up and got the total of 995. The bike ride home from work tomorrow should put me over.
If only I had done another "lap" today after work instead of stopping at 16 miles! Oh, well....
My weight has leveled off at around 165. I need to stop snacking. :(
SCUBAbe 03-10-2005, 05:57 AM I lose all my weight off the top half first so seeing noticable differences is hard at first...I too am very sore, LOL! I could not get up to exercise this morning. My son and I got going on the DDR Dance game on our play station and we did it for 5 hours  So that was an amazing workout actually. I do not think I sweat that much even doing Taebo (gross, I know ;) )
I wish I would lose some off my top half. It just keeps geting larger. LOL. I don't really like sweating, but with the firm I sweat sooo much. My BF says it's a good thing. I have never showered so much in my life...LOL..I'm up to 2-3 showers aday now...:) I took yesterday off. Today may be scratched as well. I only had about 1 1/2 hours of sleep. Hopefully I'll make it through work and physical therapy and have enough energy to work out. (I hate insomina!!)
kadiehl 03-10-2005, 08:35 AM Now I feel that way about my bottom half ;)
Today I did the Cardio Bootcamp video and it was not bad at all! There was only one floor hopping move thing I could not do but I made it through. I thought was an hour long video but it is only a half hour so I did the Abs bootcamp video. I really need to work on strengthening up my arms and back and then I will be able to do the last two moves that I can not quite do on that video. I do not sweat a lot doing these videos but you can definitely feel your muscles being worked! My arms really hurt right now as well as my upper back muscles. I know by the end of the day I will feel it in my abs as well. I did take yesterday off totally- I needed it and I do not think there is anything wrong with taking days off once in a while. In fact, I have read that it is good for your muscles to do so. It gives them time to rebuild and to repair themselves.
I am eating a pretty simple diet and just moderating things and losing weight so that does not concern me. I think I am on the right track and doing good for my first full week doing this.
Tomorrow I will attempt the Basic Bootcamp video again. After an hour, that will be all I can handle, I am sure :)
TrekkieDad 03-12-2005, 05:30 PM I heard that question twice today--once at the end of our 42-mile ride over Corral Hollow and Patterson Pass, and once at the bike shop.
It's not like I've lost a ton of weight--only a few pounds, but I guess it shows--especially while wearing bike kit. That wouldn't apply in the bike shop, though, as I was in street clothes.
As for the ride: one rider new to our group fell behind and turned around. (He was a recruit from a spin class, and our routes and pace can be daunting for newbies.) Waiting at the top of the first pass, we flagged down a motorcyclist, and he saw our companion heading the other way.
On the last downhill, we had a tailwind, and several of us topped 50 mph. (It's the only place I will descend that fast, as the road is straight and smooth, traffic light, and the view unobstructed.) :~D
Time to break out the sun block. I'm noticing a little redness on my arms as I type. :(
Anna Banana 03-13-2005, 12:55 PM I overdid it a little on the treadmill today and my knee is a little sore. Do you think some tylenol and just resting it for awhile will suffice? I want to make sure it's good to go for all those San Francisco hills!
TrekkieDad 03-13-2005, 10:18 PM That's right, 71 miles, all flat. Started out a little cooler than I expected, but I was never really uncomfortable. Loooong break in the middle for corned beef and cabbage and to celebrate the 65th birthday of a fellow club member. It was more like two 35-mile rides in a single day. Respectable average speed of 16.4 mph.
I gotta be careful that I don't fall asleep at the keyboard. ;)
TrekkieDad 03-15-2005, 08:02 PM Time to speak up, or you will have to listen to me drone on about all the biking miles.
After I rode home from work, I switched to the mountain bike for a ride out to and along a levee I used to ride on a regular basis. Even though it's only 18 miles, it would take an hour and a half to do the whole ride.
Boy have things changed! In several places the trail has all but disappeared, with chest-high weeds (some of them stickery). I made it through, but if I had gone down, no one would have found me for a long time.
As pretty as some of it is, I don't think I will ride there again for at least a few months. Perhaps the levee district will get out there and do some abatement when the vegetation inevitably dries out.
Almost forgot--the milage total for today is just over 26, 7.6 commuting and 18.6 on the after-work ride.
So let's here from the rest of you! :p
kisroo 03-15-2005, 09:21 PM I lost a 1/2 lb at WI this weekend. Woot! :D I have to keep reminding myself how sloooooooow a few lbs comes off.
I am noticing my jeans looser with the strength training though. That's a good thing. I'd rather tone up than lose lbs. If I'm gaining a little muscle, I don't care.
Trekkiedad~hubby loves to ride and has a recumbent bike. He rides it to work and for fun in the summer. I should start riding, huh? ;)

Just don't ride with him. Just about anyone else will be more patient. As much as I'd like to have my wife take up cycling, she'd be wise to find others to ride with.
marktips 03-16-2005, 11:04 AM I'm getting dressed to hit the weights - my first real workout in about 2.5 months. I did cardio last night and felt grand and today I re-tackle the weights.
I've been out of comission with an injury - tennis elbow is not fun! If it really "hurt" hurts - stop. That's the lesson I learned the hard way. Funny thing being last week a friend of mine did the same thing I did just last week, so instead of having her mope around with a gimpy arm for a few weeks thinking it would goia way on its own I sent her right to the doc to get muscle relaxers and anti-inflmatories etc. Elbows are fickle lil things.
I'm gonna be really watching my form, and to heck with goin heavey. I've been training to be a "weight-trainer" all this time when in reality I wanted to be a body builder - who knew there was a difference? In short, weight trainers want to lift heavier weights, while body builders just want the bigger muscle look, which can be accomplished with lighter weights and different training.
So, i'm no longer gonna be judging myself by how much I can push but rather by how big I can get my biceps ;) Going moreso for burn that jsut brunt exhaustion. Hard to explain, i know, but after the downtime to read up on things, I feel much more confident in it all.
Oh - switching to mostly dumbbell movements with my chest and arms than barbell to make sure i'm not forcing my elbow into any funky positions anymore either. Also, gonna focus on my forearm strength in general so the first thing to go wont be my wrist - and thus i'll hopefully never bash my hand in the rack again ;)
To explain - how i hurt myself: My right wrist gave out when benching, and in a quick movement to rack it, i bashed my hand under the bar and in the rack itself on the right side, during this my left arm took on all of the weight of the bar forcing it down past my chest/side - over stretching the tendons and such. So, while I was nursing a bruise on my right hand, i didn't realize my left elbow was damaged (it only felt a little sore) until the next day when it throbbed profusely.
Anywho, everything I've read says to learn from your mistakes and that the weakest link is what fails - which is what happened to me. What to do now? Make the weak link stronger and move on ;)
SCUBAbe 03-16-2005, 07:58 PM I have been so sick since MA. Not because of MA, becasue of other issues I have occasioanlly. This is the first day I have felt better, but I didn't work out, because I'm still so tired from not sleeping in about 5 days. We had the worst hotel room EVER!!. Tomorrow I will start my firms DVD's again. :) Thankfully I lost about 5 pounds over the weekend. Taking the last 3 days off shouldn't put me to far behind schedule..:)
kadiehl 03-17-2005, 12:34 PM I am down 6 lbs now total! YEAH! I have been sick the past 3 days and unable to do anything but I am hoping to hit the Taebo again tomorrow!
ericles 03-17-2005, 01:00 PM yippeee...down 3 lbs. from this time last week. Cutting out the "sauce" has helped. I won't lie...I sure did enjoy my glass of wine in the evening! I'm sure I will again :p just not till I drop some of these pounds.
At the end of my workout (10 min. walk warm up followed by run 60 sec. walk 60 sec. for 35 min.) I ran for 8 min. straight ... perhaps not that great an accomplishment except that I never ran anywhere in my life and I always hated it. I had to see if I could do it and i did. Not that a 90 yr. old lady in a wlker wouldn't have passed me...fast I wasn't. But that's okay!
Next stop - Chestertown Tea Party 5K Memorial Day weekend. God don't let me die ;) on the course!
TrekkieDad 03-19-2005, 03:00 PM Only 21 miles today. Threat of rain kept it short. Got rained on the last couple of miles, anyway.
Don't know about riding tomorrow. I'm singing for the Unitarians in the am. I may ride alone later.
I'm on spring break and hoping the weather will allow some good rides this week.
Gosh, I love this thread ... this whole forum!
marktips 03-21-2005, 02:50 PM Lacing my sneakers up as we speak. Tweaked my routine based on what I did last week, little lighter in the start so i don't burn out. Correction - burn good, total fatigue bad though. Or atleast, not my goal right now.
rentayenta 03-21-2005, 08:10 PM Hi all! Although March is almost over, I am back OP. I gained 4 lb. on my DL trip-ouch!
TrekkieDad 03-22-2005, 02:11 PM When you are a bike rider, rain sucks. The sun came out for a while and the streets started to dry up, so I took a chance on a ride. There was rain on the radar, but I figured I'd have an hour before it arrived.
All was going pretty well, but I decided not to press my luck. I was headed for home, when about two miles out, I got hit by a squall. I arrived at home soaking wet, and the bike is still outside drying out.
The last time I rode was Saturday, when (you guessed it) about two miles from the end, we got hit with rain.
I'm on spring break, and normally I'd be doing a few big rides this week. I'm lucky if I can get out for a short neighborhood run without getting soaked. I will not be a happy camper if it's like this all week. :(
I might actually get time to work out this week. I am off untill monday after 3 gruelling weeks at work. Today was my first day off in 15 days. I haven't been to the gym for over 20 days, but I figure if I'm working 70+hours a week for 3 weeks straight, I'm probably getting enoiugh exercise. (Not to mention I haven't had time for a full meal untill today either)
Am down another 3 lbs since my last post here, so that's a huge plus!!
TrekkieDad 03-23-2005, 07:59 PM Got in 25 miles today and didn't get rained on. :p If the weather permits, my riding buddy and I will get in a good 50 or more in the hills tomorrow. Things are looking up. :D
TrekkieDad 03-24-2005, 05:46 PM The rain is gone and the Sierra foothills are lush with new growth. It's been a while since we've done a long hill ride, so three of us turned away from the short loop and completed a ride of 66 miles with over 5000 feet of climbing. Places visited: Wallace (start/finish), Burson, New Hogan reservoir, Valley Springs, Paloma, Mokelumne Hill, Jackson, Martell, and Stony Creek.
The air was cool (middle high 50's), sun was mostly out with fluffy clouds all about. I'll probably take it easy tomorrow--unless I do a short ride. Saturday and Sunday are looking good. Monday, rain is forecast. :(
Total mileage this year so far--you don't want to know. :p
TrekkieDad 03-25-2005, 06:20 PM Did a short ride (28 miles) in the hills this afternoon. Two other riders. Wallace (start/finish), Campo Seco, Pardee. Beautiful weather, wildflowers blooming.
SCUBAbe 03-25-2005, 08:08 PM I managed to pull a muscle down the left side of my neck, through my shoulder and down my back. I did this while sleeping if you can believe that. I have done it before, but this is the worst. I took a muscle relaxer yesterday and i will take another one tonight. Needless to say the last two nights I have not worked out. I hoping it will be better tomorrow and I can do my regular workouts again. It is much better today...so i have high hopes for tomorrow.
kisroo 03-26-2005, 03:10 PM I'm with 3894...or Helen. I love this thread. Looking forward to April's thread!
Sorry about your pulled muscle, SCUBAbe. Hope you're feeling better!
I continue to tone and am loving it. :D
~kisroo
TrekkieDad 03-26-2005, 07:42 PM OK, so I'm starting to get just a little sore. Today, two of us extended the ride and covered 55 miles with 3800' of climbing. But I expect to be out on the bike again tomorrow. It will be flat to rolling.
Places visited: Valley Springs (start/finish), Pardee, Stoney Creek, Martell (break), Sutter Creek (via Sutter Hill), Ione, Jackson Valley, Buena Vista, Lake Amador (break), Pardee (again) to finish. By Pardee there was an especially raucous flock of wild turkeys on a hill beside the road. Later, we had to slow our descent to Ione because there was a turkey in the road.
Want to know what I eat on a ride day like today? Oatmeal and juice for breakfast; a couple of bagel bars, a 24oz Dr. Pepper, a gatorade, and a couple of bottles of water on the road; and after the ride a small turkey, cream cheese, and cranberry sandwich, clam chowder, and iced tea. (OK, so we had a bite before driving home--it was 2:00, and we were hungry.)
DW brought home a couple of fish tacos for my dinner--what a sweetie! More iced tea, and I'm good for the day.
If you come my way and bring your bike, I'd be happy to show you around. ;)
