View Full Version : Toddler snacks in the park?
Spookygirl 02-21-2005, 03:04 PM What to you recommend to pack in with us, and what do you recommend buying in the park?
We are planning on eating breakfast and dinner outside the park, we have reservations for Goofy's Kitchen for Brunch, and I am hoping to keep us mostly fed with snacks and such until dinner time.
Thanks!
Niwel 02-21-2005, 03:13 PM They do sell fruit in the park: apples, grapes, bananas.
Whatever you bring, put it in a sandwich bag -- or something else that seals. There's nothing worse than something opening in your bag. :) You can bring in snack-sized food, you just can't being in a entire box.
adriennek 02-21-2005, 03:25 PM Goldfish, pretzels, fruit snacks, 100% juice boxes, sippy cups. Oh, also- cereal- Cheerios, Kix, etc, and animal crackers. I've brought goldfish and other cracker like things in a plastic container and/or bring baggies in the diaper bag to "dish out" snacks.
When we buy snacks, we've found soft pretzels are good. I wipe the salt off for the kids. Like Shana said, they sell fresh fruit at some of the carts. The restaurants usually sell milk so if you have your own sippy cup you can pour that into a sippy and/or you can put water in a sippy.
Hope that helps!
Adrienne
Edited to add: Personal soapbox- I would not buy juice boxes in the parks. They're a rip off and they're easy to pack in a ziplock in the diaper bag. For little ones, I've always watered down 100% juice. On occasion they get lemonade watered down, but I try to be careful about the sugar my boys consume because they get hyper. Sippy cups, water, own juiceboxes from home- milk I'm fine buying. And also, they'll give you a cup for your kid's meals but you can subsitute milk or juice, too. Just ask!
adriennek 02-21-2005, 03:33 PM Ok, I'm adding more, LOL. After looking at the ages of your kids, I would suggest, if you really want to skip lunch, bring a little insulated lunch bag with a ziplock of ice in it. Pack some string cheese and/or yogurt so you'll have an easy protein on hand. We do that, too.
Another great way to eat a heartier snack would be Bengal BBQ in Adventureland. They have meat and veggie skewers. You might want to get one chicken nugget kids' meal from a walk-up restaurant to split the chicken nuggets between the kids for a protein snack, too. I see your son is 13 and all I can think of is how much those teenaged boys eat! :D

Spookygirl 02-21-2005, 03:38 PM Special Side Note to Adrienne, I am always packing DD favorite snack ;)
Thanks for the replies guys! I will get to work on a shopping list. DS isn't going with us :( He's gonna be at his dad's house, so it's just the little one this trip. DH is going to have to be the main pack camel for food and drink, because I am a baby slinging mama, and her bottom doesn't touch a stroller, LOL!

Spookygirl 02-21-2005, 04:13 PM you have mail...
Right back at ya! :D
adriennek 02-21-2005, 06:23 PM Ok, Spookygirl, are you the same Beckie who e-mailed me this weekend?
I just have to derail this thread. I have had such a hard time the past month between a really really really really painful week that I only got through because of Mother's Milk tea and a dosage of Advil advised to me by a medical practitioner and now my supply is seeming low to me again.
To those of you random anonymous people who have been e-mailing or PMing me about my articles or about questions about DLR, and yes, there are more than 2 of you-- THANK YOU. God has sent me what I needed when I needed. None of you realized how much I needed those e-mails and PMs.
You'll never guess where Cman is and what he's doing while I'm typing this :~D

Spookygirl 02-21-2005, 07:17 PM Yeppers, that's me ;)
I am sorry to hear you had a rough week! Do you need more Mother's Milk tea? I have some I can spare for you if you like!
You go Cman!

That's sweet of you, but I don't yet. When I bought mine there were two kinds: Mother's Milk and ORGANIC Mother's Milk. The ingredients were different so I got regular Mother's Milk because that's what my lactation consultant recommended. Now my favorite store only has the Organic kind. The consultant told me about two other stores that carry it and one is actually much closer than my favorite store. (It's ridiculously close to my house actually.) If I run out, I'm going to go get some there.
Who knew that I would enjoy coriander in tea so much? It sure is a strange combination but it really doesn't taste that bad. And boy, could I tell that it WORKS the first time I drank it!
You hold on to yours - you may need it again ;)

Spookygirl 02-21-2005, 07:40 PM Oatmeal, Ice Cream and Dark Beer work too :)
I can only hope so :)

Ok ,then nursing/slinging moms- don't forget a snack for YOURSELF as well! And lots of water!
For my kids I go to Cosco and stock up on fruit cups. DH drinks the water out of them and the kids eat the fruit. They also have applesauces as well. Also cut veggies and fruits (apples, oranges, grapes sliced) would be a good idea. They could always be dipped in the applesauce. We also freeze juiceboxes and have a tote for them. Be sure to bring wipes for sticky fingers.

I tried that when Cman was overdue and it didn't work. And I don't like beer. So there I was forcing myself to drink these beers. I'll stick to the tea ;)
Why can't it be margaritas or wine? That ice cream thing can be dangerous!
Also, love the applesauce idea, justlittleoldme!

Beer works to resume milk production in the breasts-I don't know anything about starting labor. When my oldest was a baby, my mother came to visit and stressed me out so badly that my milk dried up. My doc told me to drink a bottle of beer. My milk came back :D
adriennek 02-22-2005, 09:34 AM That does make sense. When my sister worked for an OB-GYN's office, they frequently told their overdue patients to go home and drink a bottle of beer. I don't know if it was something about the yeast and barley or if it was the alcohol relaxing the body to 'let' labor happen.
I just know that beer didn't jumpstart my labor
Adrienne, the impatient.

You do know what else jumpstarts labor? ;)
Not that you or I will ever have to worry about that again! :D (They don't make a big enough smiley for that!)
adriennek 02-22-2005, 09:52 AM You do know what else jumpstarts labor? ;)
I do, there was no way that was happening, and yes, there isn't a smilie big enough. ;)
But spookygirl only has 2. She can have another one. ;)

Not only can she, she must! It's only fair :D
Spookygirl 02-22-2005, 01:18 PM I am working on it as hard as I can!! LOL!!! :p
Notice the age difference in mine? Not doing that again, this potential baby has another year or so to catch, and then I am done, LOL! :D

OK one thing that I couldn't have gone without was capri sun or similar juice containers (not the box ones the other type) we froze them in the fridge at the hotel and kept a good supply at the bottom of my diaper bag. We were there on an extremely hot day and they stayed cool and refreshing all day long. Kept my little peanut refreshed all day long and keeping up with fluids is so important on a hot day at the park!!!
