View Full Version : WebCams
SallySkellington 02-08-2005, 05:24 AM Okay, I don't know a thing about webcams, but I do want to get one. This (http://www.bestbuy.com/site/olspage.jsp?tab=1&type=product&id=1089246250395&skuId=6773618&productCategoryId=cat01057) one's in my price range, anybody know if it's got good resolution and frame rate, stuff like that?
Bill Catherall 02-08-2005, 09:26 AM The resolution 640 x 480 is about as good as you're going to get for a webcam. If you don't plan on also using it as a digital camera then anything more is pointless.
No matter how fast the native frame rate is, it will be slowed down by your internet connection. The slower your connection the slower the frame rate.

Not too worried about that, I've got a good connection (cable).
So far this sounds like a good camera. :) Thanks, Bill!
Best Buy! Must go to Best Buy! :~D

Me too, but the frame rate is still slower over the cable connection than the native frame rate.
Flint 02-08-2005, 05:26 PM Web cams generally have just overall mediocre-poor quality, even the expensive ones.
SallySkellington 02-11-2005, 10:10 AM Okay, I got my webcam, and I'm already having problems. I was talking to a friend on AIM last night, and he said that the camera would freeze after about 15 minutes. He was still able to hear me, but he was looking at a frozen picture of me. The only way to get it working again was to disconnect and reconnect, but it would happen again. Do any of you techies have a clue why this is happening?
Bill Catherall 02-11-2005, 10:24 AM Have you tried it with Yahoo too and see if does the same thing?
SallySkellington 02-11-2005, 10:54 AM No. And my friend says his camera doesn't really work on Yahoo, so we just use AIM.
SallySkellington 02-11-2005, 12:10 PM Oh, and it's not just AIM. It did the same thing when I was messing around recording myself. Sound worked, but I was a still picture.
I am glaring at my webcam right now.
Flint 02-11-2005, 05:00 PM 1. you may not have enough RAM.
2. you may not have enough cache space set aside.
3. it's normal and it does happen all the time, no matter which clients you'll use.
trust me, it's not unusual.

My iSight's never frozen. Not once!
Hey Sally, have you seen this (http://www.apple.com/macmini/) yet?
:D
Bill Catherall 02-14-2005, 09:21 AM My iSight's never frozen. Not once!
Neither has my Logitech Quickcam on my Win98SE machine. But that doesn't mean my computer is perfect either.

Of course it isn't. It's not a Mac.
Javanod 02-14-2005, 12:35 PM It's OK Bill, I've learned subtlety doesn't always work with DF :fez:
