Or that memory foam mattress? Opus1guy 02-04-2005, 07:41 PM Hang on to yer PJs 'n wallet...'cause this here's the wildest ride in the matt-er-ress! http://www.westin-hotelsathome.com/Default.htm ...though you can very likely build your own version of the Heavenly Bed for a lot less money by doing some legwork on your own and à la carte-ing it. They are incredible beds, however. And they sell thousands of them every year to satisfied (and apparently fairly well-to-do) customers. Me? I sleep on a Tweety Bird inflatable swimming pool mattress. ;) Bill Catherall 02-04-2005, 07:46 PM We recently upgraded to a Simons Beautyrest. We love it. Of course, compared to the Sams Club special we used to have, the floor is more comfortable. ;) Anyway, I no longer wake up in pain with numb arms, so that's a good thing. AVP 02-04-2005, 07:56 PM LOVE the Heavenly Bed. Love it. AVP Earkid 02-04-2005, 08:12 PM We have had a Select Comfort king size bed for about 10 years now. We love ours so much that we bought them for both of our mothers as well. DH is tall and built like a football player and I am average size. The problem with our previous mattresses is they were either too hard or too soft and after a few months they would begin to sag toward his side. He has a bad back and sometimes he would sleep on a board and sometimes on pillows to feel better. DH moves a lot while he sleeps and I am a light sleeper. Everytime he moved the entire bed would move and wake me up. We were in Vegas this weekend and I was amazed at how much the hotel bed shook when he turned over at night. I have never slept so deeply on anything other than a Select Comfort mattress. I realize just how great they are everytime I go on vacation and have to sleep on a hotel mattress and, yes, I too have slept on the "Heavenly Beds". NOTHING compares to the Select Comfort if you have DH/DW differences that my DH and I have. It is a godsend to be able to adjust the stiffness or softness of either side of the bed. I like my bed softer when I'm not feeling well and quite a bit firmer the few times my back is hurting. My DH adjusts his side probably once a week depending on how his back is feeling. But the very best aspect of this mattress is the fact that it doesn't move at all if someone rolls over, gets out of bed, gets into bed or whatever. Love it. No, I don't work for the company. :) mjformenotyou 02-04-2005, 08:17 PM Whatever you do, don't buy any mattresses from Ikea. Worst. mistake. ever. I even bought one of the more expensive ones, and it's finally become unbearable after a little over a 1.5 year of use. I'm slowly adding more and more mattress pads onto it because I refuse to re-buy a new mattress when I'm going to be dumping it in a few months. I'm going to be hitting the ceiling soon, just like a real-life Princess and the Pea. :| Opus1guy 02-04-2005, 08:53 PM We recently upgraded to a Simons Beautyrest. We love it. Actually, Simmons is who Westin uses to manufacture their Heavenly Bed mattress. So the Heavenly is probably close to one of the top end Simmons ones. Really the only advise I can offer is to use caution and carefully reconsider purchasing any mattress with a built-in pillow-top. While there are advantages to having the pillow-top built-in, it's very likely the pillow top will wear out long before the mattress. So if it's going to be a long term investment, it's likely better to do it as an add-on with fitted sheets to hold the pillow-top in place. wwithers 02-04-2005, 09:11 PM O1G, I've gotta disagree with you on the pillow top. We've had a Simmons pillowtop for 10 years now and it is still nice and fluffy. My parents used to make the same arguement about it wearing out but caved after they slept in our guest room (so much more cushy than non pillowtop). Maybe the difference is in the quality. I ama big believer that no matter what brand you end up with (as long as it's a top brand) that you get what you pay for, both in comfort and longevity. So pick the comfort level/brand you want and then buy the best one you can afford. IMO, it doesn't pay to skimp on something as important as a good night's sleep. sleepyjeff 02-04-2005, 09:12 PM Really the only advise I can offer is to use caution and carefully reconsider purchasing any mattress with a built-in pillow-top. While there are advantages to having the pillow-top built-in, it's very likely the pillow top will wear out long before the mattress. This is very true. Pillow-tops are a gimmick(they look comfortable, therefore they must be comfortable?) Best mattress? Latex. Make sure to get one manufactured by Latex International using their Talay process. Alex S. 02-04-2005, 09:13 PM Lani and I were perfectly content sleeping on the floor for many years. So when we finally decided to get a bed it was the firmest we could buy. A Simmons Beautyrest Fleetwood Firm (the Sleep Train name for it). This thing does not move. The salesman told us we should look at something less firm because people always say they want firm but don't mean it. We love it. I could jump up and down on my side and Lani wouldn't feel it. Unfortunately it has a bt of a pillowtop, but it isn't too soft. The hotel we stayed at in Singapore used to be a Westin (and is now a Swissotel) and their bed was the best firm hotel bed I've ever experienced. Red Lion, however, uses the worst (and advertises it). I swear the pillowtop was 6 inches thick and the underlying mattress had the firmness of a bean bag chair. wwithers 02-04-2005, 09:18 PM Our mattress is a "gently firm" w/about a 2 inch pillowtop. So you kind of sink down a little but then it is very supportive. biolabetty 02-04-2005, 09:38 PM We too love our king size Select Comfort. We each like a different level of softness, so this works for us. It is wonderful, let me say again, wonderful when you make the bed and want to lift up the mattress to tuck in, it is extremely light. And as was said earlier, if you have a wiggly partner, you really don't feel it. It is noticeable when you stay in a hotel bed and can feel them wiggle again. We got ours 2 years ago when they had some deal that you didn't have to pay for it for 15 months, and would not be charged any interest on it either if it was paid in full after the 15 months. They might be having that again, it was good for us because we could save the money to pay for it while sleeping on it. mad4mky 02-04-2005, 09:42 PM We have a Serta pillow top mattress. Our bed is so cozy...and comfy. When the kids are sick...oh heck...even when they aren't sick...they are all piled up in the comfy bed. Be wary of places that say "If you find it anywhere else, we'll refund the difference" You will NEVER find the same 'name' mattress at different stores. I mean you will find the name brand...but you won't say...find a Simmons Slumber Beauty at Sleep Train and at Macy's. The mattress manufacturers name the SAME mattress different names for different retailers. Honest truth. I heard it on 20/20 years ago. If you can prove it wrong...I'd love to hear about it. Either way...be sure to take your time laying on different mattresses...and really choosing what you like. When stores are nice enough to take away your old mattresses...and you then decide you don't like your new one, it's not like you can get your old one back! Sure, you can get another one from the store...but what a nightmare. I guess we got lucky. I have a friend who wasn't, and hasn't been happy with hers. Good luck. Spending good money on a GREAT mattress makes all the world in your sleep...and ensuing daylight hours. :) sdfilmcritic 02-05-2005, 12:17 AM Those fancy all foam padding ones like Tempur Pedic are amazing. Andrew 02-05-2005, 12:26 AM I've heard very good things about European Sleepworks (http://www.sleepworks.com/), but have not experienced one personally. I'm sitting on my bed now and honestly could not tell you what it is, other than a "standard" King, which is a real pain to find sheets for. Faith Trust & Pixie Dust 02-05-2005, 08:02 AM I've had a king-sized TempurPedic for about three years and I love it! I have a lower back that gets tempermental at times and this mattress is the only one that doesn't leave me stiff. I thought my husband was crazy for wanting to buy a mattress from the "toy" store (Brookstone) but it turned out to be a great decision. adriennek 02-05-2005, 09:12 AM I don't know what brand we got- I know where we bought it! When we got married, our first mattress was a gift from someone who insisted that we buy it from a specific store. We've gone back to purchase our boys' beds from that franchise each time we needed a new bed. They're soooo comfortable. Sometimes I wish I could sleep in THEIR rooms. Anyway, the store is Pacific Sales and I think that the closest showroom to me that sells mattresses is off the 5 in Cypress? I've bought each of our last three mattresses from Pacific Sales but each one was a different location. Admittedly, the sales staff was a lot more helpful with #1 and #2 but by #3, we were familiar with what we were doing so we didn't need as much help. I THINK what we got was Beautyrests. I know that PS has free delivery to anywhere and we've been very pleased with their delivery service so far. Adrienne Leap for Joy 02-05-2005, 01:46 PM We have a select comfort mattress and we love it! When we were shopping we both wanted a very firm mattress (or thought we did). After a few weeks with the adjustable firmness, we figured out that our backs are much happier with a (correctly supported) softer mattress. I'm so glad we didn't buy any of the other mattresses we looked at! We wouldn't have been happy! We LOVE our select comfort! Nothing else compares! Wfoxx 02-05-2005, 06:47 PM We love our select comfort. I don't have back aches when I get up in the morning. EFoxx sleeps better. Ours is a queen size and I wouldn't trade it for the world. I like my side soft. EFoxx likes his side firm. We just got back from a Drama conference and I missed sleeping on my select comfort. kisroo 02-05-2005, 07:14 PM Do they sell Select Comfort with and without a box spring??? We have a bed that you can't use a box spring with due to the drawers 'n stuff. Prices, please??? ~kisroo:) MrsG 02-05-2005, 08:24 PM We are currently sleeping on a fake Select Comfort bed - it's some other airbed knock off. We really like the idea and it had been a pretty good bed. Love that we don't disturb each other with wiggling, getting up, etc. We've gotten so spoiled that when we do go to a hotel, we have to sleep in separate beds.. well, most of the night. But we also love the pillow top of the Simmons. The problem we've had with the pillow tops is that they tend to cave in (as brought up) and we feel like we are sleeping in canoes! So we are still tossing around the idea of either the TempurPedic or the real Select Comfort with pillow top or memory foam. Adrienne - got all our appliances at Pacific Sales. Didn't see any bedding tho'. Earkid 02-05-2005, 08:37 PM Do they sell Select Comfort with and without a box spring??? We have a bed that you can't use a box spring with due to the drawers 'n stuff. Prices, please??? ~kisroo:) Hi Kisroo!! We didn't buy a foundation (box spring) for our bed since we have a pedestal bed too w/ drawers underneath. On our own we bought one of those foam pads that looks like an egg crate to go between the wood frame and the mattress unit. I like the makeup of the mattress unit too. The top zips on and off. Our cat peed on the bed onetime and we were able to buy just the outer zip-on portion at a fraction of the original cost. We had to replace it since there is no way to get that horrible cat pee smell off anything. IF we had a traditional mattress we would have had to replace the entire thing. I can't tell you what the prices are currently since we bought ours 10 years ago. I know they now have several different models available, more choices than when we got ours. I think they even have one that has a layer of that tempurpedic material. If there is a store close to you I recommend going in for a test drive!! :D adriennek 02-05-2005, 10:07 PM Adrienne - got all our appliances at Pacific Sales. Didn't see any bedding tho'. Right- they have a bunch of locations but not all of them have bedding. If you go to their website (http://www.pacificsales.com/store/store_m.asp), it looks like Irvine and Cerritos are the locations that currently have bedding. Everytime my parents bought an appliance when I was growing up, we ended up at the Pacific Sales location that used to be in East Torrance. It looks like that store is closed now. (There are a few locations I've been to that are closed. In fact, the two stores where we bought our older two sons' beds are both off the list now!) So the stores tend to move around. Go figure. Good prices and decent service, though. It might be worth a trip to Irvine to check out their prices. We plan to buy a bed this year and I can guarantee you that I'll shop at PS. It would take a lot for me to not buy it there. Adrienne dsnyredhead 02-05-2005, 10:24 PM I urge anyone buying a new mattress to try a few out, whether it's at a friends place or a hotel. I remember staying at my parents place a few years ago and they have one of those 'feathertop' mattresses. Never again will I try to sleep on that type of mattress unless I am forced to. It depends on your circumstances of course, but with my bad back it was awful. I am glad that we got the chance to try out that type of mattress so that we could avoid it when we bought a new one for home. If nothing else, lie on a few at the store...really. sleepyjeff 02-05-2005, 10:49 PM Those fancy all foam padding ones like Tempur Pedic are amazing. Comforpedic makes a really good one too, and they use the same 5.3# Visco-elastic foam as Tempurpedic uses. Another good one to try is the Foamex Sensus foam mattress. It is a 5# Visco-elastic which is virtually the same as the top two 5.3# ones but usually costs 1/3 as much. Still, if you really want the very best Mattress you can't beat a Talay(Talatech) Latex Rubber Mattress. Made from the sap of the rubber tree you can't get a more natural mattress. They conform without sacrificing firmness and dustmites simply cannot live inside latex making them naturally hypoallergenic :) |
