TrekkieDad 02-05-2005, 05:10 PM WooHoo TLMt!!
Back to WW for me as well. I woke up this morning as dizzy as could be. DH checked my blood sugar level and said he was surprised that I hadn't passed out. Low/no carb is very easy to stick to but obviously not the right thing for my body.
Low carb is not the right thing for a lot of people. It is no diet for an athlete, as carbs are needed to replenish glycogen in the muscles burned through exercise. And don't even talk about the amount of saturated fat found in some low-carb diets!
TrekkieDad 02-05-2005, 05:14 PM 36 miles today. The uphill wasn't bad, and I got up to 46mph on the downhill! More bragging tomorrow.
Oh, yeah, I weighed in at 164 yesterday. No big deal, except that it was Friday, when I usually weigh more than Monday. This time I weighed less.
TrekkieDad, you did a total lifestyle makeover, as I recall? Can you tell the story again? I remember it being very inspiring.

Well, it wasn't total, as I have been a cyclist for about 7 years. The big change recently was dietary, because of my high LDL. (The doctor, himself a cyclist, could hardly recommend more exercise.)
Anyway, he wants me to try to lower my LDL through diet alone. That means no red meat (especially sausage), more fish, less fat overall, and favor mono-unsaturated and poly-unsaturated fats. I'm not a picky eater, and I don't crave high fat foods. I just made poor choices. Now I make better choices. That alone has led to a small but noticeable weight loss. Less weight translates to being faster on the bike, and riding becomes even more fun.
I got the DW involved by buying her a low-fat cookbook, and she has pretty much given up red meat, as well. She admits it's not as big a sacrifice as she expected. She's been into weight watchers and still keeps track of her "points." She's also enjoyed trying new recipes, and she's learning to cook fish.
It's been a change, all right, but I already had the exercise part in place.
Time to brag: I rode 44 miles today, making it 78 for the weekend. I'll try to get in some miles after work this week, as there will be no bike riding next weekend.
disney jones 02-06-2005, 10:28 PM Three days at DLR - and i didn't eat any churros, ice cream, or fried food!! :)
Bill Catherall 02-07-2005, 09:49 AM Low carb is not the right thing for a lot of people.
Well, there are really two ways to look at low carb.
(1) The new fad way, which is quickly growing out of control without really teaching people anything about carbs and nutrition. According to the new fad all carbs are bad and make you fat. (The exact same thing happened years ago with the low fat diet which resulted in a fad of new low fat foods that were actually very bad for you.)
or
(2) "Controlled carbs" which teaches good carbs vs. bad carbs and how good carbs fit into a nutritious diet for either the athlete or average Joe.
Too often people forget about balance and proper macro-nutrient proportions and enter into pendulum diets. They cut out fat all together but neglect to watch their sugar intake. Or they cut out carbs all together and neglect to watch their fat intake. If taken to such extremes it can be harmful and make it much more difficult to reach your long term goals.
Weigh-in today had some nasty results. A gain of 2 lbs for a total of 205. Much of it could be retained water weight because I ate myself sick yesterday (stupid Super Bowl party) and ate many things I really shouldn't have. I'm sure in a couple days things will regulate and I'll redo my weigh-in.
I've been keeping up with my workout goals. I did go to the gym 3 days last week but did Pilates for only one day. I went to the gym again this morning and plan to stick to the same routine this week, but with the 2-3 days of Pilates included.
My wife picked up another Pilates DVD somewhere for $1. I haven't taken a close look at it yet so I don't even know what it is or how good it is. I'll probably look it over tonight.
MouseWife 02-07-2005, 10:03 AM LOL She may have gotten it at Target. My husband picked up 4 different workout DVDs the other day.
I've been trying to stick to my plan. My weights workout area still isn't done. I have given a deadline and if he doesn't get it cleared up {with my help, of course} then I am going to start going to a gym. I have always tried to make sure that the familys needs were taken care of and that I still did the workouts I had to do. Now, I am slacking off and I don't like it. So, if he doesn't fix it {he is fine working out there} I am going to get back on track however need be.
I miss my weights and I think my body does too.
kisroo 02-07-2005, 03:18 PM Wow~Trekkie! I am continually amazed at the number of miles you rack up on the bike. Great job making dietary changes as well. I'm glad your DW is "on-board", it helps doesn't it?? DH at first hated the "healthy" cooking, but now gets a little put out if it's an "on our own" dinner. ;)
:waves at Mousewife: I'm still loving that "QuickFix" dvd. Easy to fit in strength training. And, am seeing the difference in my jeans, finally!
Bill, I completely agree with your assessment of completely "low carb" versus cutting down on the "empty" carbs. I think that's where most of the low carb diets have failed~by saying you have to cut out ALL carbs to get the benefits. High fiber, complex carbs are essential, I think.
Happy Monday everyone!

disney jones 02-07-2005, 06:21 PM (stupid Super Bowl party) .
exactly.
(but the food sure was tasty, especially the large assortment of Marie Callender cream pies:
coconut - guilty, lemon: guilty, chocolate: guilty)
brazen wench 02-08-2005, 08:10 AM The exact same thing happened years ago with the low fat diet which resulted in a fad of new low fat foods that were actually very bad for you.
I've followed WW for almost 3 yrs, wondered about some of the low fat foods I eat, but have rationalized away my doubts for the sake of convenience and weight loss. If you have a link or some specifics, I'm interested in what you know about this. TIA.

Yeah, kisroo!!
Well, maybe I am taking advantage of him not cleaning the garage....That is what I mean I need to focus!
Maybe it is my age creeping up on me....

Doing a google search will yield a ton of hits about this, some better than others.
The facts:
Fat contains more calories per gram than protein and carbs. Therefore, eating too much fat causes weight gain.
Eating too much saturated fat is a major contributor to heart disease.
So the low-fat diet was born.
What went wrong:
Food companies caught on to the low-fat craze and started modifying their foods to appeal to the low-fat dieters. But to remove the fats and still make it taste good they added sugar. At the time people either weren't too concerned with actually reading the food labels, or they didn't understand the bad effects sugar can have.
Labeling food as "low-fat" is often an invitation to "eat more." Especially to the many many people who aren't really aware of proper nutrition. So they end up eating the same number of calories, if not more. But now they're eating more sugar than before leading to weight gain and adult onset diabetes.
Also, in addition to adding more sugar for taste, they'll add hydrogenated oils which actually increases the trans fats which aren't listed on the label. So those "low-fat" cookies or other foods are often loaded with bad fats.
Cutting fat:
Yes, it's a good idea to reduce saturated fats from your diet and limit the amount of calories you eat from fat to less than 30% of your daily caloric intake (or even less if you are trying to reduce cholesterol or lose weight). However, cutting fats entirely can also lead to problems. Your body needs fat for cell reproduction. With less fat you crave more sweets. Good fats (monounsaturated) can help to raise your HDL, the good cholesterol. Raising your HDL helps to lower your LDL, the bad cholesterol.
If you're on a low-fat or controlled fat diet the best thing to do is just to avoid foods naturally high in saturated fats. Those green "low-fat" labels are a sales gimmick. Avoid them. For good sources of fat use olive oil in your cooking. Eat fish and nuts. Don't use margarine. Butter isn't the best thing, but it's better than margarine. Flax seed or flax oil is another good source of healthy fats (as well as soluble and insoluble fiber, lignans, and a bunch of other good stuff).
rentayenta 02-08-2005, 12:09 PM Hi all. I hope everyone is doing well.
Thanks for the carb/fat info Bill.
I have been back on points. Its boring but it works
TrekkieDad 02-08-2005, 06:33 PM I didn't get to ride my bike to work today as I had an out-of-town workshop. But I did get home in time for an after-work 15 miler and headed out around 4.
But while on my usual route I encountered 3 other rider friends and switched to their route to have some company. By the time I got home, it was after sundown and I had ridden 22 miles. Beautiful day (for February), and I don't regret one extra turn of the pedals!
kadiehl 02-09-2005, 07:44 AM I can not do the Low Carb thing either since I have insulin resistence...it makes my body go hay wire and I literally get crabby and extremely tired from the extreme dips and all that in my insulin and sugar levels. I tried it and it did not work- for me the key is moderation, not drinking pop, and lots of exercise.
I have been very sick going on 3 weeks now (just a horrible nasty cold I got twice) and today I feel 100% better (been popping a ton of Vitamin C) so I am hoping to get back to my Taebo and weights tomorrow. Once I am not coughing as bad- I will get back to step aerobics too.
TrekkieDad 02-10-2005, 07:50 PM I had a 24 mile day today between riding to work and riding after work. I'm taking the weekend off. I'm going to Disneyland! (Need the give the saddle sore time to heal.)
kisroo 02-10-2005, 08:01 PM Staying OP (on plan, for non-WW), barely. :|
Lots 'n lots of stress. :| Gym closed for 5 days. :|
I don't wanna step on the scale this week. :|
Oh. Wait. This isn't the whiners thread, is it?? Sorry.
OK~I'm going to turn this frown upside-down!
Tomorrow, I don't work. The gym re-opened this am (I was there at 5:00am!). I'm going there bright-eyed and bushy-tailed in the morning and get a great workout in. Then, I'll treat myself to Allann Bros. green senchia(sp?) tea on the way home and head outside with the pup for a walk.
See?!? I feel better already! Thanks for being here guys!!! ;)
Then, I can really enjoy the romantic dinner and a movie that Mr kisroo has planned for me. Maybe some dark chocolate as a treat???
How's everyone else doing?
HAVE A WONDERFUL TIME, Trekkiedad!!!! Tell Earkid hi for me! :D
~kisroo:)
rentayenta 02-12-2005, 08:20 AM Still pointing my way along. I hope you all have a great weekend.

Not a one :D I did lose 2.5 lb though :D
I really need to get back to the gym.
I measured myself on Jan. 24 and then not again until today.
A total loss of 3.5", people!

I'm back OP. A little chocolated out, is all. ;) It's impressive that you didn't succomb to a little Valentine's chocolate, Renta-baby! :D
~kisroo:)
TrekkieDad 02-17-2005, 11:14 PM I thought I'd check in with 19 miles today. With the trip to Disneyland and all the rain since I got back, I hadn't been on the bike for a week! Oh, well...
And the weekend weather looks iffy. At least it's three days, so I should get in some some riding it it's not totally rained out.
