Click here (http://secunia.com/internet_explorer_command_execution_vulnerability_ test) for a non-destructive vulnerability test. Hint: If you are using Internet Explorer 6 on Windows XP, you are vulnerable, unless you have locked down your security settings beyond the default. There is no patch yet from Microsoft.
The workaround is to set the security level to "High" in the Internet zone. A better workaround is to use a non-vulnerable browser, such as Opera (http://www.opera.com/) or Mozilla Firefox (http://www.getfirefox.com/).

Hooray for Firefox!!! I had to reformat my computer (lost everything) due to horrible pop-ups spyware crud that made my computer crash. I have been using Firefox and am so happy!! Before I was using Explorer on XP....bad bad bad!!!
Please note that AOL, Eudora, and the Outlook suites also use the Internet Explorer core (MSHTML) to render their email and pages.

which is why I've used a web-based e-mail for over 6 years now. Just got a Gmail account, and I'm sure it'll last me another 6+

Mozilla, the group behind the Firefox browser, also has a very good email client: Mozilla Thunderbird (http://www.mozilla.org/products/thunderbird/). It easily replaces Outlook and/or Outlook Express, and will even import your existing mailboxes and settings from O/OE. It's free of the myriad vulnerabilities of OE.

Well, I must be doing something right as when I clicked on the test link...nothing happens. Just get an immediate "Done" at the bottom of the page.
Windows XP Home, IE 6.0 with SP2. I've not set any special security features that I know of.
I generally use Pegasus as my email client. Its a straight email program - no html/web stuff in it - I prefer it for safety. Lots of nice features. But... it does take some proficiency to get around.
