I use a few tools, all free...

The Google Toolbar blocks a lot of stuff (but not all)

http://toolbar.google.com/

Then I use Ad-aware and SpyBot

http://www.lavasoftusa.com/software/adaware/

http://www.safer-networking.org/en/index.html

Seems to catch the vast majority of stuff out there...

I also use Norton's Anti-Virus, and my Cable Modem has a good firewall built in....

Thanks dark beer, I got all that to ( love both adware and spybot) also norton and xps firewall. and so will just do my scans once a night like always. I had zone alarm but It was taking me forever to post here or read posts. That darn zone alarm was slowing my DSL way down, I am now back to normal and I am glad I got rid of it!

Get Firefox at www.mozilla.org

Personally, I use Firefox from www.mozilla.org/firefox, and install the Adblock extention, which with a nice set of carefully crafted rules blocks all popup adverts, and 90% of banner adverts on pages.. Makes browsing a lot nicer, and I now refuse to touch Internet Explorer with a barge pole :geek:

Firefox won't stop everything, but it stops quite a bit.
I still get 2 popups whenever I hit the MousePlanet home page, for instance, or CNN's website.

Really? After I switched over, the mouseplanet pop ups disappeared for me.

I do not want to down load a new browser, I am so computer iliterate and do not understand much. I will live with it. Now how about getting my windows to open up right? they open up small and or half size I want them to open all the way!

in the very corner edge of the browser when your mouse is pointed over it the arrow will change to diagonal arrows, click that spot, hold the mouse button and drag the browser larger. Repeat it for as many corners as needed to expand it much bigger. Or just click the square button in the top corner.

Installing Firefox is really easy. If you were able to install and uninstall Zone Alarm, Firefox would be a piece of cake. I too made the switch several months ago and I'll never go back to IE.

i agree with everything above. if your going to us IE, you definitely want to get the google toolbar. and if you have the latest service pack for windows xp...it comes with a built in pop up blocker for IE.

My job envolves the decision on what software goes on about 1500 machines and I have no hesitation in recommending Firefox. It's my own browser of choice and the one I have set as default on the system here (We also offer IE for those IE only websites. Yes I would like to say "it's bad html" and not offer IE but in reality that is not an option).

Fight the browser war with fire, get Firefox

If I down load firfox can I use both if I like one over the other? Or do I have to uninstall fox fire to use IE again? I get kind of afraid of change :( I am so used to IE

They will happily co-exist.

At least, until a sneaky "Windows Update" automagically uninstalls Firefox for you, for "security reasons".

I down loaded firefox last night. I like it! So how does a web browser prevent viruses and spyware?

So how does a web browser prevent viruses and spyware?
This may be oversimplified... Since it's not an integral part of the Windows interface (like IE) it simply doesn't run the code that executes the virus or spyware installation.
