stan4d_steph 01-12-2005, 08:30 AM I tried one of the new Lean Cuisine dinners last night - their new Spa Cuisine Classics line. I had the wild salmon with whole wheat orzo, spinach, julienned carrots and zucchini in a basil sauce. Very delish and only 5 points. I've had really good luck with Lean Cuisines and they make it really easy - WW points are calculated and listed on the box. :)
rentayenta 01-12-2005, 09:09 AM there seems to be a backlash to this thread in other threads and it's growing! (and its probably done on purpose) - so many other posting on churros, Cadbury eggs, turkey legs, cheese filled pretzels, fudge, and corn dogs! :( (LOL!!)
Dude, chill out with bringing your bad-for-you-food vibes in here  This is the healthy thread ;)
Bill Catherall 01-12-2005, 10:35 AM I love peanut butter. I had an apple with peanut butter for dessert. Mmmmm.
If you're trying to watch your intake of saturated fats and sugar then you might want to give 100% natural peanut butter a try and stay away from the more common stuff like Skippy or Jiffy.
Natural peanut butter (yes, the stuff that separates) is a good source of protein and unsaturated fats with no added sugar and is healthier than Skippy. I've found some brands to be creamier and better tasting than others. You have to be willing to experiment to find the one you like though.
rentayenta 01-12-2005, 03:04 PM Cool Bill. Thanks for the tip. I am going to pick some up on my way to school. Any particular brand?
Bill Catherall 01-12-2005, 04:09 PM Any particular brand?
It really depends what store you go to and what they carry. I've liked Adam's if you can find it. I've got another kind right now that's pretty good too. I just can't remember the name of it.
When you open it the first time there will be a lot of oil at the top. Don't be tempted to dump that out. Without that oil the peanut butter gets very hard. Just take a butter knife and plunge it all the way to the bottom of the jar and stir very slowly. The oil should begin to mix in and your stirring can begin to get a little more aggressive. Once it's all mixed up if you refrigerate it then it shouldn't separate again.
At room temperature the peanut butter will be a little more "runny" than you're used to. Once refrigerated though it stiffens up.
stan4d_steph 01-12-2005, 06:14 PM I like Laura Scudder's natural PB. It seems to be fairly widely distributed.
kisroo 01-12-2005, 07:38 PM Other nut butters are also good. I like almond butter every so often for variety.
I'll have to look for Laura Scudder's natural pb. My arm gets tired stirring all that oil into Adam's pb!
Good day food-wise. Good day exercise-wise. Good day! ;)
Keep it up everyone~you all motivate me!

I like this post...it makes me think of that commercial where all the ladies are on the hillside doing yoga and talking about what they ate and then one of them describes this fabulous diet dinner she just ate! :) Your description of that Lean Cuisine dinner makes it sound delicious!!
Other than my moment of insanity earlier today, I behaved myself pretty well at breakfast , lunch and dinner. But I still need to ride the bike.
Bill Catherall 01-13-2005, 10:22 AM I like Laura Scudder's natural PB.
Yeah, Laura Scudder's. That's what I've got right now.
Man, it sure is hard to get to the gym in the mornings when you stay up late watching Lost and Alias.

Ditto, Bill. I missed spin class at 5:00, but made it in time for a little elliptical trainer. No weights. :(
And, it's gals' night out tonight! Wine, chocolate, and other "guilty" pleasures. Heaven help me!
~kisroo
rentayenta 01-13-2005, 08:07 PM I got the natural PB and it looked ever so icky. I stirred it and it tastes pretty good. Thanks for the tip.
We went to dinner tonight- Mexican food. I got a chicken fajita salad sans cheese. I skipped the chips and guac which is a major victory for me :D
Have fun with the girls kisroo!

I can't stop eating.
MouseWife 01-14-2005, 05:53 PM LOL rentayenta~your post reads like an excerpt {?} from a book that might be titled 'Diary of A Mad Dieter'.
But that's it! I almost shut down when I saw this thread because I forgot all about it!
So guilty!
I have been eating too much as well. And, the garage is not clean for me to do my weights/stepper/punching bag. I miss that and I am getting quite irritated that someone hasn't done something about it. Including myself. :(
Okay, trying to eat better. Trying to eat my fruit and less bread. Became hooked on that darn raisin bread.
More fruits are coming back out. Peaches {do those have a lot of calories? I saw a site and it said they did but maybe they meant canned peaches?} and the most delicious watermelon!!! Oh, heaven!!
Healthy Choice dinners are on sale at Vons. Did I already say that? They are excellent. A salad first and that and I am done. If I have them, that is.
Okay, I will try and be back. I have to lose about 20-25 lbs. I haven't been running, either. Somebody slap me. {yes, I know this is impossible, why do you think I am asking? :D ;) }
Happy New Year and I won't give up!!
disney jones 01-14-2005, 05:59 PM I can't stop eating.that's the problem. i've found it's easy to (1) start eating healthy - there's a lot of good, healthy, tasty food out there and (2) get into an exercise routine, even if it's walking. getting out in the fresh air is even quite pleasurable.
But (3) - reducing caloric intake?? that's the whole problem! :(
TrekkieDad 01-15-2005, 03:46 PM Despite the 40° weather, my riding buddy and I went out for 36.5 miles in the Sierra foothills today. Since there were only two of us, we only stopped once--a coffee break 16 miles into the ride. The route back was faster (though longer) because it was mostly downhill. Averaged just over 16mph for the trip.
Dry weather is forecast, so we'll be out riding in the hills tomorrow and the next day. We need to make up for our slow start this year.
Hey Renta, been to that spin class yet?
MouseWife 01-15-2005, 05:59 PM Good for you, TrekkieDad!
I was thinking of biking myself. Before it gets too hot.
I am sitting here contemplating what I have to do this evening. I have to bike, floor exercises and then dance.
Ooo, I saw a treadmill today that I drooled over. I want one nice like I use at the hotels. ;)
Does anyone use a Gazelle? I was playing with one and it didn't seem to do much. Perhaps, wearing street clothes and holding a purse, I was not doing the full motion?
Disney Dude~ Calories. Ah, cutting back. Well, as some here do, maybe you could try keeping a journal for about a week. Go over it and see what you are consuming. See what you can eliminate. When you see it written down sometimes things can become obviously unnecessary.
Also, what are you drinking? That can be something. I cut out soda almost two years ago {except for one yucky sip recently} and I use Splenda. Cutting back on little things adds up. Cutting back on chips {if you eat them} also helps. When I have a sandwich and I want chips {low cal mayonaise if I use it at all, mustard is great and pepperoncinis add a lot of flavor}I just put a small amount on my plate and enjoy them.
Oh, also, I do eat candy. BUT when I grab some, I try and grab the kind that come in two pieces? Always give half away. Any candy I share. It helps.
When I want something flavored to drink besides coffee, I put lemon in my water. Just little things.
rentayenta 01-16-2005, 10:47 AM Welcome Mousewife- the more the merrier!
TrekkieDad- I did do the spin class and it was cool. It wasn't what I expected. They kept the lights dim and played techno music. It kicked my butt!
My next endeavor is trying a step class. I make Elaine from Seinfeld look coordinated so I am a little weary but we all gotta start somewhere :D
I went out to dinner with my girlfriend last night. The food was delish but very fattening. I need to get back on track!
Today, I am vowing to stay OP. It is so difficult when DH is at work. He is really motivating for me. He will eat what I cook and/or modify what he cooks so at least my portion will be OP. When he's gone, its just me and the kids. They look at me with their big brown eyes and beg me to order pizza. Who can say no to that? ;)
kisroo 01-16-2005, 11:45 AM I did my weekly WI and lost 1 lb. Anyone else backwards like me~gaining weight in the summer and losing it in the winter??? Oh well. I'm not going to complain. ;)
Renta~I did have fun with the girls, but like you had to "rein" it in for the past few days to get back OP. We went to the local theatre pub and I had beer(s). I stayed away from the pizza, candy and popcorn, though! (oh, alright! I had some chocolate! Stop interrogating me!!!) :| Well worth the splurge~the beer made BJ2 even funnier! heheheheh
For the next week, I'd like to kick up my strength training. I've got to get back some of the muscle that I lost with surgery!
Welcome Mousewife! :D
Have a healthy Sunday everyone!
~kisroo:)
disney jones 01-16-2005, 12:47 PM i gave up drinking soft drinks about two years ago too. i used to drink 2-3 Cokes/day but now i hardlly drink anything carbonated. What are they, about 150 calories for just a 12 oz drink? And a Big Gulp is like 1000 calories, half of the recommended daily allowance! (i hate the taste of diet soda).
I can't recommend enough for all you coffee drinkers to switch to green tea - you'll still get your caffeine, but its so much healthier for you! :)
and eat breakfast - that is the last meal you want to skip, because if you train your body not to get fed in the morning, it's gonna quickly learn to store up energy in fat. Lunch or dinner is a better meal to skip.

I completely agree with your breakfast suggestion, DisneyDude. I often don't have time to stop and eat a good lunch on the days I'm teaching, so I'll eat a good breakfast and then pack easily eaten snacks. Baby carrots, sliced apples, peeled/quartered citrus (oranges, mandarins, grapefruit...), grapes, etc...Then I can snack in between teaching groups.
I also love Campbell's Soup at Hand for the same reason. Easy to sip and go. I've been trying to switch over to using a thermos for soup, but those Soup at Hand are just too easy!
To add to your tea suggestion: I love The Republic of Tea's Mango Ceylon. I get a slightly different "pick me up" from that than I do on my coffee days. ;) I'll try the green tea, though.
rentayenta 01-16-2005, 01:02 PM Looks like I am going to have to try the green tea.
I am guilty of skipping breakfast. It just feels wrong to use up 1/3 my points on a decent breakfast. Does coffee count?

i doubt coffee counts. LOL! I read once just by switching to green tea from coffee, you'll lose 5-7 lbs., because of differences in the way it changes your metabolism. I was skeptical, but i believe i did just that when i switched.
I like green tea with a little bit of flavor, like lemon, orange or ginseng. Plain green tea, is well, plain. Starbucks has one i really like TAZO - Zen, but it's a little more expensive so i don't buy it as much. For the Financial diet, the best way is to buy it it bulk and not use tea bags, but i haven't quite gotten there yet.
TrekkieDad 01-16-2005, 03:40 PM This time I rode 36 miles with 13 other riders, all of whom were climbing the hills faster than me. (And believe me, I'm not that slow.) It was a hillier ride than yesterday (some grades in the double digits), so it took a little longer to get to the coffee break. But the downhill was sweet, and on the run-in back to the start, all 14 stayed together.
Didn't see the sun, though, and the temps were still in the high 40's low 50's. Maybe tomorrow's ride will be sunnier. It should be less hilly but likely longer than today. It's supposed to warm up this week, but I have to go back to work on Tuesday. :(
The Lovely Mrs. tod 01-17-2005, 10:56 AM Looks like I am going to have to try the green tea.

Me too. I just hate to see 6-8 points fly out the window like that. Although oatmeal is 2 pts per serving, with a bit of butter and brown sugar I come in at 4 pts and it so good for you.
Meeting tonight, I had a bad day yesterday, holding my breath....

brazen wench 01-17-2005, 12:31 PM Thomas' has new Light Multi-Grain English muffins that are only one point each b/c of 8 g fiber (not a typo!) and 1 g fat. They taste a little sweet, but are good. By using 1/2 cup Egg Beaters, 2 slices fat-free cheese, and Canadian bacon (the brand I use is four slices for a point, ymmv), you can make a big McMuffin-type breakfast that's only 4 pts.
