Bill Catherall 01-03-2005, 02:02 PM 18.2% body fat is lower than average. I would be stoked with 18.2% body fat.
Of course, you're also a woman. ;) And yes, even for a man 18% isn't all that bad, but it's fatter than I'd like to be. Besides, my long term goal is gaining more muscle and at 18%BF it's easier to pack on more fat than it is to add muscle. Most studies show that it's actually easier for men to gain muscle when they are somewhere around 11%BF.
kisroo 01-03-2005, 02:24 PM I'm doing the "my head is too stuffy to taste anything so why eat" plan today.
I woke up feeling way worse than yesterday, with a fever and the chills. ICK! :( So, I'm drinking the fluids like there's no tomorrow~'cause I have to go to work and class tomorrow regardless of how I feel.
Needless to say, I didn't make it to the gym. But I have a feeling that my body temp is making up for those saltines I choked down for lunch. :crying:
Keep up the good work ya all!
~kisroo:)
So apparently if I just eat under 20 grams of fat a day, I can eat all the calories I want. According to my trainer ;) it is very important to eat at least 4 times a day (small meals) particularly one before I go to the gym so I have some calories to burn and my body doesn't go into starvation mode.
Kisroo-- Eat something, even if you can't taste it! In fact, make the best of it and eat something gross, since you can't taste it anyway. Like oatmeal or lima beans. :D

Or tofurky??
Ugh. Yammy.
After that lovely thought, I'm grabbing my water and heading back to bed!
;)
No. Tofurkey is worse than death by starvation. Stick with the lima beans. :fez:
I hope you feel better soon!

I hate that, when everything tastes gross and the same. I say have a cocktail, that way at least you will sleep well ;)

What are your trainer's credentials? Most trainers I know who I have either talked to or who's articles I've read would never give such advice.
TrekkieDad 01-03-2005, 06:39 PM Day off for me, other than a little weight training in the morning. I had too much to take to work AND it was raining, so no bike riding today. Tomorrow's looking better.
Last I checked, I weighed about 167, body fat normally runs about 16%, haven't checked in a while. Just calculated BMI as 26.2. (A healthy BMI for adults is between 18.5 and 24.9)
BMI table at: http://www.permanente.net/kaiser/pdf/9749.pdf
rentayenta 01-03-2005, 07:11 PM Today went well. I drank tons of water and used 16.5 of my 23 points. My throat is killing and food is tasting sort of off so that's all I could muster.
Wish me luck at WI manana.
I am doing a spin class in the morning in honor of you Trekkie :)

I look forward to hearing how it went.
Hakuna Makarla 01-03-2005, 07:14 PM arggg I ate to many eggs today and to much hot wings. Ok I think I did well, we shall see tomorrow !
kisroo 01-04-2005, 08:20 AM Renta~hoping your WI went well this am.
Karla~hang in there!
Emma~still not gonna eat those lima beans! ;) Hope you are doing well!
Everyone else that I missed~have a healthy day!

marktips 01-04-2005, 08:50 AM I did perfect foodwise yesterday - was late for work cuz i stayed to finish my weight training.
Of course, the workout wasnt pefect being my first time back and some weights i wasn't sure about and over or under-estimated, but I did get a good workout.
Connective tissue around my elbow is a lil sore, but i think that's from non-use in the last 2 weeks, if it's a problem tomorrow i'll wrap it while I do my legs, it'll only be used for supporting and not any real lifting. Today is cardio, i'll do that in a few hours.
Ran out to the store, got me some shakes, cuz a nutrition guru harped on me that the protien in the bars wasnt as good as the shakes due to the proccessing. So, lots spare bars for emergencies. Need to grab some groceries still for the week - its all about planning.
Oh, and for the BMI: If you're not fat, ignore that. BMI is always way off for anyone carrying any kind of muscle. At 16% BF you're not fat, but could change up your diet and exercise to see more definition and a lower BF. That's for guys, for girls 16% BF is a great place to be.
rentayenta 01-04-2005, 09:49 AM It went well kisroo, thanks :D
I lost 1.6 which doesn't sound like much but is the equivalent to 6 sticks o' butter :D
I just got back from the gym and I am gearing up for week 2 that starts today.
WooHoo ;)
Trekkie, I goofed on the spin class start time so I am doing it manana. I did the elipitcal machine today. Ouch!
What are your trainer's credentials? Most trainers I know who I have either talked to or who's articles I've read would never give such advice.
My trainer has 4 national certs, one from the American College of Sports Medicine. He's also my husband. ;)
Obviously, I can't go totaly nuts with my calories, and I need to eat healthy. What I was trying to convey (badly) is that I don't need to be counting my calories right now, just my grams of fat.
Bill Catherall 01-04-2005, 11:26 AM What I was trying to convey (badly) is that I don't need to be counting my calories right now, just my grams of fat.
Ah, now I see. That's different. ;)
Yesterday was difficult to get through. By evening I was definitely feeling the effects of sugar withdrawl and I was not a happy camper. I even had one of my favorite pies sitting in the kitchen that I resisted eating, which only made me grumpier.
It was hard getting up this morning to work out. I'm not a morning person and cold, dark mornings are the hardest. But I did make it there and did 40 minutes on a bike. As usual, it was hard getting there, but worth it. I felt good and still feel great. Ate a nice breakfast and my metabolism is feeling higher and I'm not so grumpy.
I'm still having some very minor back problems so I'm going to be starting a regular schedule of Pilates workouts instead of my usual weight training. I'm thinking M/W/F will be Pilates (we have some DVDs so I can do this from home), and T/TH will be cardio. I'll try that for a few weeks and see how it goes.
marktips 01-04-2005, 11:31 AM What pilates videos? I've got MTV pilates, power yoga, and yoga. Also, the MTV Body Rock for cardio - not that i ever do any of them :P
I'm more of variable high intensity cardio type - and you can do that for short periods for good effect.
Ever try to assume the pilates V just for fun? I like to see how long i can hold the full plank or the hundreds with the full pilates position (not the beginner like they suggest - and i ought to do) until i fall over.
After my personal trainer and falling on my face more than once learning to do proper pushups, I find humor in failing at such things - but the more you try the better you get.
Bill Catherall 01-04-2005, 11:39 AM What pilates videos?
I'm not sure exactly. Some beginner Pilates. My wife bought them a few months ago. Coincidentally, right before I injured my back. Having now gone through physical therapy and learning a few stretches and core strengthening exercises I see the same exercises in the Pilates videos. I've been meaning to start on them sooner, but just never really got around to it.

HITT? I've tried that before but haven't really liked it. It also didn't seem to really do much for me. I have more success just using the bikes and getting my heart rate up and sustaining it for 30-45 minutes. And even though I like using the eliptical machines I don't get much benefit from them either. So I usually just use those for warm-up.

Good luck with the plank! ;)
rentayenta 01-04-2005, 11:47 AM Bill, my DH hurt his back as well and has found that Pilates and yoga help a great deal. I can empathize as I live with a physiaclly fit man who has had to modify his workouts. Swimming is good too.
Bill, I know what you mean with the grumpy thing. There is a huge plate of chocolate chip cookies in the break room calling my name, and all I've had so far is a bowl of instant cream of wheat.
Edited to Add:
P.S. My butt hurts too from some stupid dina disk thing I had to do at the gym last night. So I'm DOUBLE grumpy.
The Lovely Mrs. tod 01-04-2005, 11:53 AM Well, I came in at 30 pts yesterday, not a great day but not all that bad either. Water is, as usual, my problem, I get to the end of the day and realize I haven't had enough, so I either drink it all at 10pm and get no sleep, or don't drink it and get annoyed with myself.
It's too cold for the water! Got to get that herbal tea. And the veggie soup too!

I forgot about zero point soup. 30 points isn't bad at all!
I'm not being particularly careful about what I eat right now. Although I don't eat too much refined sugar, I DID eat two donuts and some plain M&Ms in the past week.
That said, I am looking down the nose of the last week of training for my half-marathon. This morning, I ran 6.6 miles (half the distance of the half-marathon, which is 13.2 miles). The half-marathon is this coming Sunday, and after tomorrow and Thursday, I'll take Friday and Saturday off to rest up before the race.
My last half-marathon was 2 hours 11 minutes. I don't know if I'll beat it, but assuming I feel good on Sunday morning, my plan is to race the thing and try to go as fast as I can. We'll see how I do.

Oy vey.
