View Full Version : Which picture printer would you buy?
Hakuna Makarla 12-26-2004, 06:59 PM I am looking to buy ( when I can afford it in a few months) a copier that does the pictures .the ones that you can put a media card in and it will print out the pictures. I want a good one, but one that does not cost a fortune on ink. any idea's? I see the lexmark one but man the ink is expensive. what have you guys got?
SCUBAbe 12-26-2004, 08:20 PM I usually just take them to costco. I get a great quality print and they are only about 18 cents each an 8x10 is $1.99. My mother has a HP that is an all in one. It prints nice pictures. I ahve a HP it does an Ok job, but the ink is to pricey to print the amount of pictures I print out and it's about 6 to 8 years old. However, for scrapbooking or photo albums I just get them doen at costco. :)

Try this one
HP (http://www.shopping.hp.com/cgi-bin/hpdirect/shopping/scripts/home/store_access.jsp?BV_SessionID=@@@@0429475742.11041 22023@@@@&BV_EngineID=ccgiadddhdigmddcfngcfkmdfondfgf.0&product_code=Q3501A%23ABA&template_type=product_detail)
Flint 12-26-2004, 09:14 PM I'd have to agree with SCUBAbe. Go to Costco and get prints, or do the new kiosk things that are popping up where you can print your digital pictures individually for about 29 cents each. (Walgreens has this, I believe)
You'll still end up ahead, money-wise... photo-quality paper and ink is very expensive, and still not as good as prints you could get elsewhere.
If they don't take your photo cards, simply download the pics you want onto your computer, then burn them to a CD. They can definitely print from CDs.

I produce photo quality prints with my equipment. If you don't, you must be using a Lexmark. :) It may cost more but you get more control over the prints. A good print and JASC photoshop are a good combination for good photos.
Hakuna Makarla 12-27-2004, 05:27 AM I would love to go to cosco, but its 90 miles away so it would cost me 45 cents a print LOL! or more! gas prices you know. And then the 70 dollars to join the cosco club ( don't you have to join there to be a member) Any way it costs 29 cents for prints from my memory card and I read where those ones I can do at home on a lexmark or HP are cheaper. That is why I am asking the question about what brand may be better. Also its better to do them my self, I can fix problems etc at home.
Flint 12-27-2004, 05:59 AM HP would probably be the best, or a really good Canon, then.
SnoopysDad 12-27-2004, 09:37 AM Stay away from Lemark... they are cheap for a reason. You forget one major reason for having the printer.... you can make prints in you PJs.
If Costco is out of the question, use Snapfish.com (19 cents a print). I use that and it is much more convenient than going anywhere. Plus you get 10 free prints on your first order.
wwithers 01-10-2005, 11:40 PM Epson makes some of the best photo printers around. Even the lower end ones peoduce high quality prints if you usually print 4x6s and the occasional 5x6.
I have this printer:
http://www.amazon.com/exec/obidos/tg/detail/-/B0000WA8CI/qid=1105428156/sr=1-1/ref=sr_1_1_etk-photo/103-2821805-8622219?v=glance&s=electronics&n=502394
and I love, love, love it. It prints professional quality prints with 5760x1440 dpi resolution and 1.5p drops. You would pretty much have to spend a couple of thousand to do what this one can do. (Did I mention how much I love my printer-- I got it for Christmas).
That said, another advantage to the Epsons (even many of the cheaper ones) is that they have 6 to 8 colors (instead of the standard 3). This means that you only replace the colors you need to instead of having to chuck a whole cartridge because you used all of the cyan. Also, on the higher end Epsons, they use both black photo ink and black document ink which means that you don't use up all of your expensive photo black on documents (or have to change cartridges back and forth). Also, the higher end ones have a clear coat which makes the prints both waterproof (a major drawback to most inkjet prints) and fingerprint proof.
If I haven't sold you on the Epsons, Canon also makes some excellent printers (especially their smaller ones).
I would caution you against Sony printers. Although you can get them to make excellent prints, you have to do a lot of fiddling around to adjust the color saturation (they tend to print very heavily to the pink or the green side). You can fix this problem but it's a total pain in the butt, especially if you're like me and you just want to open the box, plug it in and print.
Finally, Consumer Reports says you get the best prints by matching your paper brand with your printer brand. I have found this to be very true. I get much better prints using Epson paper than any other.
Wishful 01-12-2005, 09:34 AM What kind of camera do you have? You can always get a dedicated printer that hooks up straight to the camera like the HP and Kodak ones and they should have card readers in them.
I used to use Sanpfish and oFoto also. They have mail order and internet upload capability (not sure about oFoto haven't used it in a while). I liked using mail order because of the low cost, but hated the wait. One of the things I like about the on-line services is that you can have photo books made, I saw one that was really high quality, about 20 double sided pages that someone had made for $50. Not bad for a special gift.
hbquikcomjamesl 01-12-2005, 05:53 PM How about a big honking Fuji "Pictro" machine?
Don't want the bulk or the expense, how about a dyesub, then? Or a color laser printer?
