I have a laptop. It's grey. Specifically, it's a Toshiba. Anything more detailed than that, ask my hubby.

My laptop is in serious danger of becoming an Identified Flying Object, because it has a very nasty habit of spontaneously powering down.

While I'm working on a project.

Which hadn't been saved.

For three hours.

Now, before you tell me about auto save, yes, I know all about it. Unfortunately, I was under the (mistaken) impression that it was functioning. But apparently the program in question doesn't have such a creature, so I am royally screwed.

Anyone have any ideas? Because this thing is truly about to be thrown through a window the next time it does this.

My old HP used to do this. The problem was that it would get too hot and shutdown automatically. The best way to keep it from happening was to ensure adequate ventilation under the unit where the intake and exhaust fans were located. Usually this meant putting it on a book or something so that the area around the fans was clear. And never ever rest it flat on something soft, like a bed, because with no airflow it would shut down within minutes.

I'd also check your battery and power supply, to see if there might be a faulty connection somewhere.

Now I remember why I save my work every three seconds. :p

Adrienne,

Vicki found this (http://www.csd.toshiba.com/cgi-bin/tais/su/su_askIris.jsp?ProductMenu_1=%28All+Models%29&ProductMenu_2=-------------------------------&QS=spontaneous+shutdown&IL=EN&BV_SessionID=@@@@2109712502.1103433358@@@@&BV_EngineID=ccceadddgfjjejkcgfkceghdgngdgmn.0&askNothing.x=42&askNothing.y=20) info on Toshiba's site.

Gimme a call at home if Tony's not around.

Thank you all for your assistance. Apparently this is a KNOWN problem with this &*(^%$#@&*)$_ laptop model. At the moment, it is propped up on a book, pending a thorough cleaning of the air intakes.

If it's laptop skeet~throw my ibook in the works!!!!!

First day of my winter vacation and it goes on the fritz....
Mine is one of the versions which had a bad logic board. Apple replaced it for free in Sept., but now it's doing almost the exact same thing as it was prior to them "fixing" it! ERRRRRR...

I've tried rebooting it, taking the battery out, resetting...everything that the Apple website suggested. Anyone here use ibooks and have a suggestion????
If not:

PULL!!!!! :throwsibookinair:

I hope cleaning the air ducts worked. The problem with laptops is that they have very little space for air flow and cooling. This is why they aren't as powerfull in most cases.

Also, the term "Laptop" is to be used loosly. As they have recently found that they male lap suffers from the heat of the computer. So keep it off of both the soft bed and male laps please!

My Laptop is like 5 years old, if you set it on your lap it will burn you. i hate that but its a good little machine.(you would think since my boyfriend builds computers and the like i would have something nice and new, buy noooo.) Anyway, if you want to keep it cool set in on something thats hard and cool, like the kicthen floor, the tile keeps it cool. or a glass table.
