For printing purposes, I need to supply a Camera Ready logo. If it's an .ai file from Illustrator scaled appropriately to the page, is that camera ready? Does it need to be saved as black and white if I'm just going to have it printed in black and white (it's currently 4 color).

Also, what's an .eps file? What application is that?

Thanks.

I don't know about camera ready. Is that for printing purposes? Could the print shop provide more information?

An .eps file is an Encapsulated PostScript file. It's used for importing and exporting PostScript files.

Thanks, Bill. Yes, I'm going to ask the print shop. As for the .eps file, how can I save something as .eps -- I'm not given that option when I do a save as (unless of course I'm not doing something correctly)?

Try Export instead of Save As.

I was just about to try exporting, and all of sudden I went to save and there was the option to save as .eps -- you know, of course, that had I not posted the questions, it never would've given me that option. Thanks, Bill!

This has a lot to do with the actual printing for repro work. If the
shop is going to produce work based on a photographic process, they are probably asking for a special 'screen' or line print. Your normal laser printer, even with a .ai or .eps file cannot create this.

For color printing, each layer is printed, camera-ready, in black. The
layers are then provided to the repro. shop with the appropriate color (Pantone or SWOP (or other ink standard color pallette)) number.

(at least thats how I did my logos last time.....)

If I'm going to be printing my CYMK logo as a single color print, is an .ai or .eps file sufficient? I need to check this company's website for further instructions, but I know you guys always give better info than any company can! ;)

Was your CMYK logo created in Illustrator (.ai)? If so, you have a good working file. Your print shop will need a working .ai file, if possible. An .eps file is workable. The logo should be in the actual color (single color) that you want it to be, so you can either do that adjustment yourself, or get the printer's designer to do it for a fee. They can then get camera ready art from that file. (I was a graphic designer for several years for a print shop a few years ago before returning to teaching.) One of the biggest problems you might have is with fonts. Designers and print shops work with Macs and if you have a PC file with PC fonts, you will need to do a little extra work before sending off to a printer. Tho' many printers have some PC capabilities due to so many PCers thinking they are graphic designers  )
