Monterey Bay Aquarium -- Sea Notes -- Oct. 21, 2004
Welcome to Sea Notes, your monthly email update from the
Monterey Bay Aquarium.
1. EXHIBIT NEWS: WHITE SHARK UPDATE, MAHIMAHI, LEAPING BLENNIES AND MORE
Our young white shark continues to do well in the Outer Bay
exhibit. She doesn’t feed every day, but when she eats she often
consumes between two and four pounds of salmon fillets and
mackerel, with vitamin supplements. Look for online updates with
the latest white shark news.
Also brand new to the Outer Bay exhibit are 13 mahimahi,
collected by our husbandry staff off Southern California. They
range from two to three feet in length, but based on past
experience they’ll grow larger over the next few years. They’re
all feeding and doing well. We’ve also added another 1,000
sardines to the exhibit, where they are schooling and surviving.
They school now numbers about 2,000 individuals. They’re most
often visible at the lower exhibit window in Vanishing Wildlife,
but occasionally venture up to the second level.
You’ll also find another scalloped hammerhead shark (the fourth
on exhibit) in the Outer Bay. It outgrew the Australian exhibit
in "Sharks: Myth and Mystery."
In "Splash Zone," the popular and unusual leaping blennies are
on permanent exhibit, between the leafy sea dragon and the
penguin exhibits. They’re native to western Pacific Ocean islands
from the Marianas south to Samoa and the Cook Islands, where
they’re found in the intertidal zone on rocky shores, hopping
from the water to exposed, spray-splashed rocks.
Finally, if you see a fourth sea otter on exhibit, she’s a female
named Joy there temporarily. Joy is a non-releasable animal who’s
part of our Sea Otter Research and Conservation program. Usually,
she serves as a surrogate mother for stranded otter pups. Right
now she has no pups to raise, so she’s visiting the exhibit. It
gives her more space, a change of scenery and other otters to
interact with until another pup arrives.
Visit What’s New on our web site to learn about these and other
new arrivals in our exhibits.

4. CONSERVATION IN ACTION: WHITE SHARK PROTECTION, ‘FARMING THE SEAS’
White sharks have gained new protection in a global wildlife
treaty approved by the U.N.-affiliated Convention on
International Trade in Endangered Species (CITES). The 166
member-nations in CITES have just approved regulations requiring
a controlled system of permits for all international trade in
white shark parts and products. Under the new regulations trade
will be closely monitored, and may be banned altogether if white
shark numbers keep fading.

Will fish farming avert a global food crisis or speed its
arrival? Those are the questions addressed in a new television
documentary, "Farming the Seas," scheduled to air nationwide on
November 18 on PBS stations. Narrated by Peter Coyote, the
program explores what’s at stake for us all as the aquaculture,
or fish farming, industry spreads across the globe. It highlights
groundbreaking efforts by scientists, communities and industry to
develop viable, sustainable operations, and recently won a CINE
Golden Eagle award. You can check for details about where it will
air in your community, http://www.habitatmedia.org/. You can
download one of our "Seafood Watch" pocket guides, which list
sustainable wild-caught and farmed seafood items, at
http://www.mbayaq.org/cr/seafoodwatch.asp.
