View Full Version : Toddler car seat comfort
Magoo 10-11-2004, 08:35 AM We will be driving to WDW in Feb. with a 3 1/2 year old. It's about a 24 hour drive and we plan to leave late at night and drive through while he's sleeping. When he falls asleep in his car seat his head always falls over. Has anyone come up with a way to prevent this? I tried one of those half circle neck support things when he was a baby and it didn't really help. Any ideas would be appreciated!
slydini 10-11-2004, 10:08 AM My son is seven weeks old. My wife discovered that a folded diaper and the neck support works great.
carliebelle 10-11-2004, 10:45 AM We drive about 22 hours or so, also. We actually would just put one of their stuffed animals on the side of their head so they wouldn't fall over to the side. The slumping forward thing still gets me, though.
karliebug 10-11-2004, 12:25 PM Isn't it amazing that the kids fall asleep in those positions and it doesn't seem to bother them at all. OMG, if I fell asleep like that I would wake up crippled! We put an adult size pillow between the door and the child for her to lean on, making sure that the door is locked,of course.
Arnie 10-11-2004, 01:10 PM Have you tried duct tape?
 Just kidding the sticky residue would be to hard to clean off.
Cariad 10-11-2004, 03:21 PM Guess the car seat doesn't recline then? I think the best thing is to try and find something that goes under the chin - one of those airline inflatable neck pillows, but in reverse? especially if you put it on after he's fallen asleep - then he can't complain! I know you tried one when he was a baby, but toddlers are a different shape, so it may work now!

:) ;) Oh my gosh, don't give me any ideas!! He's a very active boy and I've been wondering how we're gonna keep him occupied for that long in the car.

To give you some ideas to keep him occupied. A TV with DVD/VCR player works really well and he can watch Disney films on the way to get him ready for DL. If that is too expensive or out the question, check your local toy store for travle size toys. Such as a Magna-Doodle, a board they can draw on with a magnetic pen. Etch-a-Sketch, books (look at the Used Book store for old Disney books) or some other type of game for him to play with. It would be a good idea to bring some toys even with a TV in case they get bored with it or need something else to engage them for a while.
Take a break when driving to let him run around at a McDonalds playland or something similar to. It will let him burn off some of that energy he has been storing up during the ride.
GusMan 10-14-2004, 09:02 PM I have seen a small "boppy"-like head support for infants just for this purpose. In fact, I think we have one. Not sure if we ever used it though... he tends to sleep like a rock.
hersheythecat 10-25-2004, 09:12 AM Does the car seat accept the seatbelt? If it does we put one of those animals that goes around the seat belt right at our 3 yo's neck height and it does pretty good at catching him. You may want to look into a booster seat that has the bar that comes across it and let him put a pillow on the bar to lean on.
VickiC 10-25-2004, 10:18 AM Do they still sell the ones with a bar? They are not nearly as safe as regular 5 point harnesses.
Good luck on the trip. I drove to my parents house in Arizona this summer. Left at 4 am, thinking that the kids (ages 5 and 2) would sleep for at least the first 2 hours. No such luck, they were wide awake and chattering the whole time.
GusMan 10-25-2004, 03:28 PM I have seen the ones with the bar. However, from my own (daughters) experience, it can be a hassle to get the child in and out of,especially if they are asleep. However, it may work well for you.
I saw one at Target and Babies R Us the other day.
As long as you can try it and bring it back if it does not work out, I say give it a shot.
