View Full Version : Banner Ads with NOISE!
Drince88 10-01-2004, 04:35 PM Lately, there have been banner ads on Mousepad that are JUST like TV commercials - complete with dialog about the wonderful product being shown. Is there anyway to automatically turn off the audio on these things? I'm using Earthlink Popup blocker with IE6, and I don't mind the banner ads (well, the roach one gets to me!) but the dialog is very annoying when I'm also watching TV or listening to the radio.
Thanks for the help!
Andrew 10-01-2004, 05:55 PM Ad Muncher (http://www.admuncher.com) works for me. Not on MousePad, because I'm a staffer, but on other sites. You could always subscribe (http://mousepad.mouseplanet.com/subscriptions.php?).
EandCDad 10-01-2004, 06:48 PM While subscribing is certainly an option, the other option would be to log off whenever those annoying ads start. I'll go with that one. These are more annoying than the pop-ups.
stan4d_steph 10-01-2004, 06:49 PM You could always mute your computer's sound.
Drince88 10-01-2004, 07:40 PM I've just gone "back" and then re-clicked the thread I want, and that seems to re-set the ads, I was just wondering if there was a setting to change to "fix" them. (I suppose I could just turn off my speakers, though, too.)
Honestly, I keep the sound off on my computer, so I never knew we were running those. I'll check with the Powers That Be about those - I don't think we should be running them at all.

Drince88 10-02-2004, 04:14 AM Thanks, AVP!
That was really the answer I was hoping to get!
TrekkieDad 10-02-2004, 07:27 PM Refreshing the page usually loads a different ad banner. I do this as soon as I hear one--probably not what the advertiser intended.
SallySkellington 10-02-2004, 09:08 PM God bless Norton Internet Security. I get no banner ads on this site! Bwa-ha-ha-ha-ha! :~D
Sheila 10-03-2004, 12:00 PM The Cold Iron (or whatever) soldering iron banner ad has noise; so does the PetGroomPro banner ad. They are indeed very annoying....
Edit to add: The First Alert alarm system banner add also has sound. No wonder it's taking me longer to browse the pad while on dial-up.
Sheila
We're seeing what we can do to get these turned off. They aren't supposed to be running in the first place...
XHarryB 10-04-2004, 10:51 AM Wow! glad I know where that was coming from. i listen to internet radio at work and wasn't sure what that extra sound I was hearing was. At least I know it wasn't my radio station. Would be great not hear it though, it's kinda annoying.

Does your company IT manager complain about your wasting precious company bandwith to listen to the Internet radio? The one at my work does. He sends out e-mails every so often when he notices the network takes a nose dive in multitasking duties among everyone in the office. He loves to blame it on someone listening to Internet Radio. But I'm the lucky one, because I work graveyard shift and no one is in the building. So I can use as much network bandwith as I want.
P.S. This is an advance apology to anyone in the IT feild. I'm not an expert at how network systems work, so I'm hoping I used the correct terms (i.e. bandwith) associated with the situation I am conveying in my post.

You are. Internet Radio is pretty negligible as far as bandwidth usage--even the high quality streams, say 192kbps, are a tiny fraction of a T1 corporate leased line. Try convincing the suits of that, though.
LeslieM 10-04-2004, 05:36 PM I'm with Drince88 and Thanks, AVP !

Can I take you with me to work? The IT guy sounds like one of those tour guides mentioned in the Tour Guide Mistakes thread. In his last e-mail he claims one person listening to Internet Radio takes up half the company's "bandwith". I think we have a T1 line because it moves relatively fast.
Alex S. 10-04-2004, 07:08 PM Well, one person doing it isn't that much. But how many people do you have going out over the same pipe and server?
I'll be back when the coast is clear. And quiet.

We're still working on it. We know the ads are running, but we don't know why or where they are coming from - the aren't supposed to be running.
Tony thinks he has found the problem - if what he just did works, they'll be gone in about an hour.

It looks like I finally found the source of these. The change has been made, and they should be gone for good by 9pm PT.
I've also blocked all Audio ads from MousePad permenantly, so we should never encounter them again.
Dlandmom 10-04-2004, 09:19 PM THANK YOU, TONY!
Opus1guy 10-05-2004, 12:10 AM Thank the Maker! :) That was really getting annoying.

Get Mozilla Firefox (http://www.mozilla.org/products/firefox/).
It blocks pop ups out of the box, has a built in customizable search bar, and, best of all, tabbed browsing. It is also skinnable and has a vast library of extensions that will change the behavior of the browser to suit your needs.
For instance, I have the Flashblock extension installed. Whenever the browser encounters a flash ad (or menu or whatever) instead of playing the ad it displays a small play button icon. I get to choose whether to waste my bandwith on a Flash animation.
Try Frirefox, browsing has never been so fun.

Actually, I share an office space with our computer guru. He's a tough guy ex-marine who can be pretty harsh when any of the ignorant teachers screw up his system. I manage to stay on his good side though and can get away with things they never would. I think it's because we share a common bond of annoyance with the faculty (I'm in charge of the supplies and the copy machines and such).
sdfilmcritic 10-09-2004, 12:16 PM The noisy banners have disappeared off my visits to MP. Yeah!
