We have done this several times here in Pennsylvania. Thomas is at the Strasburg Train Station in Lancaster County 3 times per year. If your child loves Thomas or just trains in general, it is worth going. The ride itself is only about 25 minutes, but there are plenty of other activities that your "little engineers" will love!

We've ridden Thomas too... it's great fun for the kiddos!

This will be our third year going. The first year, I admit, my oldest was underwhelmed. (Ignore that diesel engine in the back of the train honey... that is not the diesel engine pushing the train you see...) The second year we went because the now-middle one is still a believer. This year the boys want to take their younger cousin to introduce him to the wonders of Orange Empire Railroad Museum. We like to go on a Friday because it's less crowded.
In case OERM sounds familiar, that's the railroad museum that Ward Kimball heavily supported and donated large portions of his personal collection to them. Before he died, he was often spotted at the museum working, but we never had the privilege of catching him there, ourselves.
Here's an article (http://www.mouseplanet.com/akrock/akrock25.htm) I wrote about OERM a few years ago.
Edited to add: Be forewarned: Annie and Clarabel aren't there. You're riding "Thomas" which means a Thomas car "pulls" the regular passenger cars from the OERM collection. This was what caused my son the most grief- he had already ridden those cars so many times, the "Thomas" ride didn't feel special enough to him. That doesn't mean all kids will feel that way, just don't go expecting to ride in Annie and Clarabel ;)

Having re-read my article I would like to add, re: Thomas days,
1- They will have food venders. In fact, we look forward to the food each year. A local Perris restaurant brings out yummy bbq.
2- They also have many of the same activities that they usually have at Railfest. Because children love riding in the high seats of the cabooses, in the past, they've had another train full of several caboose cars running on another track, for example.
