View Full Version : 1st visit to DL & DCA w/5 mo. old & 6 year old
Dizneymom346 08-19-2004, 02:36 PM Hello there. This is my first posting. Does anyone have suggestions with regards to rides & attractions? Also, I have heard of the Rider Switch Pass. Will my husband and I be able to take advantage of this benefit? Thank you in advnace for your feedback. :)
Dlandmom 08-19-2004, 02:51 PM Welcome!
If you want to ride with the baby, there's:
1. Train that goes around the park
2. Peter Pan's flight...you can fly with baby on your lap
3. It's a Small World
4. Pirates of the Caribbean (if you don't mind getting a little wet)
5. Winnie the Pooh
6. Teacups (if you don't mind a little spinning)
7. Flik's Fun Fair Rides (Disney's California Adventure)
There are more, but those are the ones that come to mind.
For your 6 year old, depending on the "adventure level" of the child, there's little he/she couldn't ride. My 4 1/2 year old rides the Matterhonr regularly, but then she's pretty fearless.
Yes, you can use the Switch on may rides. Do a search on "rider" and "switch" and you'll come up with several threads which have discussed this. Since things always change, be sure to ask the Cast Member at the entrance to the ride and ask if they have it for that ride, and if so, what you need to do. Don't forget to take advantage of FastPass where available. It'll save a lot of waiting for the kids.
Forbin 08-19-2004, 02:54 PM Your 6yr can ride all the rides. Your 5mth can't except for stuff in Fantasyland.
Baby swap lets ONE of you ride while the other is holding the baby. Then swap without waiting in line again. Each ride has it's own baby swap rules (Some let you swap right at the end, some give you a piece of paper in the beginning). You have to ask at each ride.
Don't assume you get a nice waiting area with all rides, some of them MAKE you go through the line then put you out the exit to wait for the swap.
Bring lots of Water. Go early to avoid the crowds. Learn to Ride the train so that you get a 15 min break every now and then. That's about it..
Good LUCK!
Dizneymom346 08-19-2004, 02:58 PM Thank you so much for this information
missm 08-19-2004, 04:24 PM These rides are also okay for a 5 month old. Winnie the Pooh, Storybook boats, Haunted Mansion, Dumbo, the river boat. These two are maybes: Snow White (I haven't ever been on that ride), and Mr. Toad. It can get jerky at times. I don't know if your 6 year old likes Playhouse Disney but they have a show of that in DCA. My favorite book for advice on Disneyland with kids is "The Unofficial Guide to Disneyland." I got it on www.overstock.com for less then 6 bucks. I hope you have a great time.

only if he/she is tall enough. my son was 6 when we went, but he's a shorty and was unable to go on splash & indiana. he was ssssooooooo disappointed. :crying:
Forbin 08-20-2004, 08:53 AM Hehe I assumed that if her children had height issues that she would mention them ahead of time. My Daughter rode Splash at 4 (But she is tall).
And I did forget about Pooh, that's a ride specifically for the younger crowd set right next to the taller splash and pirates.

Not true.
The 5-month old can experience many things outside of Fantasyland! The only rides I can think of that a baby can't ride are the rides with height restrictions and Roger Rabbit (Children have to be able to sit up on their own to ride RR.)
Babies are often easier on rides than older children because they don't have as much awareness and fear of the unknown. Jungle Cruise, Pirates, Haunted Mansion are just a few rides outside of Fantasyland that the baby can ride on. Astro Orbiter and Rivers of America boats are fine, too. Then there are many "attractions" that are shows, such as Honey I Shrunk the Audience, that the baby will be fine in, although you will probably want to put your hands on his/her ears.
Hope that helps,
Adrienne
Dizneymom346 08-21-2004, 01:11 PM Hi there - I just wanted to say thank you again to everyone for posting all of this helpful information, we truly appreciate it. My 6 year old is pretty tall for his age, 50 inches. He is very excited about trying out Indi and Splash.
I also just had another question. The Baby Care Center on Main Street, is that the only one inside DL? What about the regular bathrooms, do they have decent baby changing stations inside of them? It just seems like it the Baby Center might be sort of out of the way if we are in Fantasy Land or Toon Town.
We are also thinking of bringing our own stroller. Currently we have a 3 in one. We were thinking of maybe purchasing a smaller umbrellla stroller to take into the parks because they are smaller and easier to maneuver around. Any suggestions?
Thank you again in advance for your replies. :)

Yes, there is only one Baby Care Center and yes most of the other restrooms have good size changing stations in them. They aren't those fold down kind, either (not in DL anyway, there are a few fold-down plastic tables in DCA- in Bug's Land of all places!)
Many restrooms have more than one changing station but there are often lines for them when it's crowded- be forewarned. They are usually made of corian, not cushioned like the Baby Care Center tables in DL. The DCA Baby Care Center has regular changing tables like they sell for use in homes. They're made by Pala.

I think bringing your own stroller is an excellent idea. I'm not a fan of renting strollers, so I admit my bias. I suggest a sturdy stroller with a basket. I'm also not a fan of depending on lockers because like the Baby Care Center, if you're on the other side of the park when you want something that's in a locker, you have to hike to the locker to get it. Strollers with baskets are good things. I hang my diaper bag on the stroller handles and use it and the basket to cart our stuff around.
I would also recommend a reclining stroller so the baby can sleep in it. Very handy.

MommyTo2Boys1Girl 09-06-2004, 03:05 PM I think you will be surprised at just how many rides you can go on as a family. There are just a few things you won't be able to take your little one on.
