Paramount's Great America Newsletter #12

Crocodile Dundee's Boomerang Bay Waterpark Will Double in Size for 2005
This year Paramount's Great America took Northern California down under with the first full waterpark experience inside a theme park. For 2005 PGA will bring Crocodile Dundee's Boomerang Bay™ to an exciting new level with a major, mullti-million dollar expansion that will double the size of the waterpark to roughly the size of eleven football fields.

While plans for what promises to be one of the most formidable waterpark experiences in the region have yet to be finalized, it is expected that the new waterpark will include: More water slides
The longest lazy river in the region offering in-water lounging and a relaxing cascading waterfall
A three-foot deep billabong lagoon set in a tropical environment
A brand new changing facility for the whole family
“Crocodile Dundee's Boomerang Bay has entertained thousands of guests since opening in May 2004. We're looking forward to doubling the size of our water park for the 2005 season so that moms, dads and children of all ages can experience twice the fun,” says Rod Rankin, senior vice president and general manager of Paramount's Great America.

Tips For Keeping Cool on Hot Days
Protecting yourself against the heat and sun is very important. Remember to apply sunscreen to any part of your body exposed to the sun, including the tips of your ears and if you’re wearing sandals, the top of your feet. Make sure to hydrate yourself by drinking plenty of fluid. Water fountains are located throughout the Park. Cotton clothing is light weight and dries quickly if you get drenched on Loggers Run or Rip Roaring Rapids. Hats and visors are always a good idea. To really stay cool, bring a bandana you can wet and put on your head or around your neck!

Don't Miss Your Chance to Run with Forrest Gump
Hollywood and PGA collide again, this time for the 4th annual Run, Forrest, Run 5k event. On Sunday, September 19th at 8am, you can be one of nearly 1,000 runners and walkers who join “Forrest Gump” as he travels throughout the Park, passing favorite Nickelodeon characters and attractions including Crocodile Dundee's Boomerang Bay, Vortex and Invertigo.

The 5k Fun Run and Walk will start and finish at the Paramount Pavilion. Beginning at 7am, participants can register and pick up race day packets at the gates to the Pavilion before warming up beside “Forrest Gump.” The event will begin at 8am and first and second place finishers in all age brackets will receive ribbons and great prizes from Bubba Gump Shrimp Co., PGA and other local attractions. Prizes vary by age group, but will include souvenirs, apparel and chocolates. The first place overall male and female finishers will win a trip for two to Monterey, California, to participate in the "Run Forrest, Run!" 5K presented by the Big Sur International Half Marathon. The trip includes hotel, dinner for two at Bubba Gump Shrimp Co., admission to the Monterey Bay Aquarium, race entry and more!

After the race, all participants and their guests will enjoy prizes, awards and a Bubba Gump Shrimp Feed inside the Pavilion. Every registered participant will receive a collectible t-shirt and free admission to PGA following the event!

Registration fees are $25 for adults and $15 for children 17 years-old and younger. All proceeds will benefit the United Way of Silicon Valley. Parking at PGA for participants is free on race day.

Souvenir Idea: Sit for a Family Caricature
Ever wonder what it would be like to be a cartoon character? Find out on your next trip to PGA where one of our professional Park artists can draw you and your family as the superheroes you always knew you were meant to be! Caricature artists set up at varying locations throughout the Park and can usually be found surrounded by a crowd of onlookers.

The Challenge: Students Versus Thrill Rides
“In May of 2003, my high school's music department took a trip to San Francisco. A total of 145 students and 11 adults were on the trip. One of our days was reserved for PGA and we were all excited, especially because many of us had never been. The few kids who had been to the Park raved about TOP GUN®, so my friend and I decided to "challenge" the ride. Those seven loops took us for a spin, but it was well worth the wait in line! Then we hooked up with some more friends to ride INVERTIGO, the Demon, and every other thrill ride in the Park. After all the excitement, a cool down was in order, so we braved Rip Roaring Rapids and got drenched.

The day was truly filled with thrills, chills, and tons of fun. The more rides we went on, the less tired we became! An hour before we were scheduled to leave, we split into groups of four and rode our favorite rides on last time. At quarter till 11, we took group photos, bought souvenirs and headed home. These memories will last a lifetime, and I plan on returning to PGA soon! Thanks to everyone for their help in making this experience more enjoyable than I ever imagined!”

- Cassandra M. from Merlin, OR, will receive two tickets to Paramount's Great America! Winners are randomly selected. Submit your entry (http://www.parkfeedback.com/news/link.aspx?QTE=2237264&QIS=69&link=http%3a%2f%2fwww.parkfeedback.com%2fnews%2fme mories.aspx)!

This is a total shame that PGA will not be getting more for 05. They're doing good on the waterpark but are fowling up the theme park. They should have built either the Italian Job or Addam's Family dark rides like the other Paramount parks got, in addition to the family dark rides like Spongebob and Scooby Doo. It seems like they just keep short-changing PGA!

Would love to see that Italian Job coaster hit the west coast!

I can only hope that they see the waterpark expansion as an opportunity to add a few master blaster water coasters, a tornado slide from Pro Slide, or even something like Perilous Plunge at Knott's (which is a better fit for a waterpark).

Did you see the Italian Job preview video? I didn't see the actual movie, so I'm not sure about a ride based on it, but it looks fun.

I did see the video, it's very, very cool looking ride. I hope it's more of a trend in coaster installations to do something different, like Mummy accomplished this year. After awhile the trend of simply adding taller coasters, more inversions, faster reaches kind of an plateau.

On a side, I think it's a real danger for a park to strictly load up on zero themed coasters as people will burn out. For example, if you do Riddler, Batman, Scream back to back - to me the overall impact is lessened as you are only experiencing variations in height and inversion order. That may be even be more true as B&M Flyer becomes MM's 17th in 05, and when 18-20 roll along, then what? Without a theme to add another dimension/ride element to a coaster, in my opinion the coasters could grow repetitve. That's what I like about the Italian Job concept for a coaster, a more themed experience will take the ride beyond simply being on track.

The Italian job movie is actually pretty good too.

Does it include driving insanely through the streets of Italy as well as through and down inside a house?
