Disney enters PC market with machines designed for kids. NY Times, 8/4/03

Disney has announced its foray into the PC hardware market with the "Disney Dream Desk PC," a mouse-shaped computer targeted towards children 5 to 12 years old.
The semicircles atop the blue-and-yellow monitor are instantly recognizable as the ears familiar to children everywhere. (Cleverly, they also function as stereo speakers.) Beneath is a standard Windows XP computer equipped with a Celeron D 2.66-gigahertz processor, a 40-gigabyte hard drive and 256 megabytes of RAM. The unit is expected to retail for $599 Dream Desk PC, and will available through the disney.com Web site beginning August 12. Those wishing to see it in person can visit CompUSA beginning mid-September.

I just got an e-mail for this...it said $900. I must've missed something. I wonder how it went from $599 to $900!

It looks cute, but they need to make a black one for adults and a red one for girls.

The $599 price seemed awfully low to me in the original post. I wonder if that is a price without a monitor.

Sorry, my bad, it's $950!

However, you do get a $200 online giftcard if you pre-order now.

it went from the $500 price to the $900 because the original reports said that you could additionaly purchase the monitor...
The $950 includes the monitor.
(and the printer, and the .. and the...)

I just saw this in Thursday's WSJ (I'm behind in my reading).

And according to money.cnn.com (http://money.cnn.com/2004/08/05/news/newsmakers/disney_ceo.reut/) ...

"The Dream Desk will cost $599. A separate 14-inch LCD display with built-in Mickey Mouse ear speakers will cost an additional $299. The PC will be sold at CompUSA stores and Disney's online store. "

Prices will probably wander around a bit after Christmas, I'd guess. ;)

So, wouldn't buying the CPU without the monitor defeat the purpose of having a Mickey computer since the Mickey ears are on the monitor?! Maybe the ears could be attached onto your own monitor?...just grabbing at straws here....

Well, one must be color coordinated, of course :D

You're right - many would probably go for just the monitor/speakers.

I did notice that the pc maker is a veryh highly rated manufacturer, so if I needed a new PC, I would certainly consider this one. We'll have to see how it looks in the store.
