View Full Version : Do Pregnancy Cravings Continue for the Child After Birth?
Gemini Cricket 11-12-2001, 07:24 PM Okay, stick with me on this one.
When I was speaking with a group of women friends that I work with, they told me that they had specific cravings when they were pregnant and now their kids favorite foods now happen to be those same foods they had cravings for.
Is this a wives' tale?
Secondly, does what you eat while pregnant affect/effect (I forget which) the child positively/negatively? I mean, I know about smoking and drinking... but other things?
BTW, I had a dream I was pregnant the other day. Seriously.
I'm a guy!
It was quite strange. I woke up while giving birth. I was so interested in seeing where the baby was going to come out from... oh well.
mad4mky 11-12-2001, 07:36 PM I have heard that some kids do like the foods that their moms craved when pregnant. I craved chocolate ice cream...and of course, my kids like chocolate ice cream! And I craved oranges, and my kids like oranges!
I think its just a "wives tale".
But, it is true that if your baby has hiccups a lot inside of you, they will once they are born. Two of my babies hiccuped a lot while I was pregnant, and both those two did when they were born. (I have had 3 children).
And, regarding the foods, I don't think so. I know that when you are nursing, there are several kinds of foods to avoid, as they can pass through the breast milk, and cause gas, and other problems for the baby, Just as alcohol can. Personally, I didn't avoid any foods while pregnant...there were some I just couldn't stand to be in the same room with...like pork. I love pork! But, while pregnant, it tasted and smelled like the meat had gone bad. And any Chinese food...which I still can't stand to date. But, every woman is different, as is every pregnancy. What will be ok with one pregnancy, might just make the mom to be sick as a dog with the next one.
I know that you and your partner are discussing having a child. I'm sure this is why you are having dreams of beng pregnant. It's a big decision for anyone...And I am sure in your case, even more so. Good luck with whatever you and your partner decide what to do.
With my 2 kids, the food I craved most while pregnant became their favorite food after they began eating solids so, I'm not too sure if it is an "old wives tale" or not - hmmmmmm.
Then again, I gave up eating red meat while pregnant with my first child because, much like mad4mky, I couldn't stand it but both of my children are serious meat eaters - so????
DisneyLad, it's best to ask a qualified nutritionist about eating different types of foods while pregnant because just like mad4mky said "every woman is different".
P.S. I love the idea of men having babies;)
adriennek 11-12-2001, 08:51 PM The whole male pregnancy thing won't work because the first few guys who try it will tell the rest what it's REALLY like and it will scare them away.
Actually, let me re-state that. After the first few men experience it, medical researchers will decide that finding a safe, effective treatment for morning/noon/night-time sickness, sciatica (sp?), heartburn, swollen ankles and wrists, backpain, etc, etc will become REAL priorities....
As for food cravings... I've always loved Mexican food. I could always eat it 24/7 before I had kids. With Matthew, I craved it all the time, and my blonde haired little kid thinks that rice and beans are the foods of the gods.... He also occasionaly surprises us by the spicy-ness of the foods he is willing to eat.
As for Spencer, it's too early to tell with him, but I craved crunchy Taco Bell tacos with him. (Yeah, I know, it's not exactly a culinary masterpiece.)

Sailor Butterfly 11-13-2001, 05:21 AM Hmmm, well I'm not a parent, but..... When my mom was pregnant with me, she always had craving for bananas, tuna, and garlic. None of these things are foods I love to eat. I will have a banana or a tuna egg-salad sandwich every so often. Garlic is something I have a odd relationship with. I don't mind it when it's very weak, but I can't stomach it strong. *shrugs*
Mad Madam Mim 11-14-2001, 11:49 AM When I was pregnant I ate a tun of watermelon. My kid, she loves it, put one in front of her and she WILL eat the whole thing.
As far as positive and negative effects based on what you eat. I think so. If a pregnant woman eats nothing but junk and fast food then she is not nourishing herself or more importantly, what is inside her. Fish is suppose to be good for a babies IQ my daughters is very high and I ate a tun of it. (by the way, she HATES fish)
