Out of curiosity:

Is there a guideline for how much quoting from a copyrighted work is considered "fair use" and how much is considered "excessive" on Mousepad?

Is it subjective? Is it based on the size of the copyrighted work, as in a percentage? Is it based on a maximum number of words, sentences, paragraphs or "column inches"?

We don't have a hard and fast rule, because the minute we do, some folks will say, "But how about just one word over the limit?" or "But these are shorter words" and so on.

You can use our posts in the News forum as a good eyeball. In general, we try to limit the quoting of material in those posts to no more than one paragraph; two at the most.

Usually, the best bet is to provide a link to the original work, so that readers can see the work in its entirety.

Does that help?
