my girlfriend and I were thinking about taking a trip down to san diego for a long weekend. We want to check out the major attractions (sea world, WAP, and the zoo) but dont have the biggest budget. Any ideas on nice, inexpensive places to stay, discounts to look into, etc.? If possible, it would be nice to stay in a centrally located hotel. Also, any suggestions on other attractions and dining options would be most helpful. Thank you very much!

I think San Diego has one of those 'City Passes'. If not, if you buy one ticket to the Zoo, and get a membership, you get into both the Zoo and Wild Animal Park.
Sea World, well, I don't know for sure what type of special they are running but AAA usually gets a discount {as well as at one or more of the eateries}. Legoland, again, not sure. But, maybe contact the Visitors Bureau? Or Darkbeer? ;)
Me, I live here and I don't a heck of a lot but Mission Valley seems to be a place a lot of people stay. Old Town might be a nice place to stay, a nice place to walk around, a lot of free things to see there. Casa di Bandini is nice. I would suggest {what we do} is eating lunch at what ever restaurant you want to go to because dinner is usually a lot more.
A harbor cruise or maybe just for fun a ride on the ferry across the bay? A sunset at Coronado Beach or maybe a bonfire at the Silver Strand? I don't know what days you will be there but also look up 'Balboa Park' as Tuesdays certain museums are free. Beautiful place to see, anyways.
Anywho, doubt if that was much help but if you wait Darkbeer and any other locals should come on and give you some pointers. :)
Have fun!

I know that there are a few decent hotels/motels in Hotel Circle off highway 8 (about 10 minutes north of Sea World). AAA always has decent deals there, and the few hotels I've stayed at there were nice, clean, and not too expensive.
Now that's an oxymoron if I've ever seen one. You don't see those two mentioned together at all anymore
Sorry SJSman I don't have any information for you, I just couldn't help remarking on the title of the thread. It seems like we are all supposed to be millionaires down here the way the prices on everything keeps going sky high from gasoline to groceries to rents to home prices.
The last straw for me was the Albertson's Chicken Meal Deal going from $5.99 to $6.99. I know it doesn't seem like much but when you have an expensive habit to support (DLR) and are currently out of a job it seems like a lot.
 I'm just bitter
I do wish you an awesome trip, San Diego does have a lot to offer - that's why it's soooo hard to move away from.

What??? And when did this happen??? I love that chicken meal deal!!! Gosh darn it!!
Oh, I hear ya about being hard to leave San Diego. Hubsters' job is ending pretty soon and we are looking around but everything pales in comparison. I mean, the pros and the cons, SD always wins out in the pros.
But, there are a lot of free things to do. They just aren't the big things. LOL Oh, I might listen to a local radio station and see if they are doing any give aways.
Oh, hey, you can sign up for some on line even if you don't live here. Or, check out the KFMB site {news channel 8} and see if they have any offers up.
