View Full Version : Healthy snacks?
CarlieB 06-08-2004, 02:07 PM You know when it's 3 o'clock, and you're really craving chocolate/something salty/a big latte? What do you eat instead? I'm stocking up on healthy snacks at the moment (I've got 6 months to be pool-ready:eek: ). So far, I have:
Lowfat cheese slices
Yoghurt
Almonds (non-salted)
Special K muesli bars
I know I should have some fruit in there somewhere....
But variety is good...what do you choose to snack on?
Ponine 06-08-2004, 02:09 PM Sugar snap peas (Do you have those there Carlie?)
Yogurt, but I sprinkle granola on mine
I also have a small bag of raw pepitas for nut related emergencies.
What are pepitas? No idea... nuts of some kind. I'm sure someone will tell us
*So I ask you.... why am I still over 200 lbs??? Why? *sighs*
CarlieB 06-08-2004, 02:12 PM Sugar snap peas (Do you have those there Carlie?)
Oooh, good idea - I love sugar snap peas:)
I have no idea what pepitas are - i don't think I've ever seen them. I have terrible cravings for nuts sometimes though - and always the bad, salty ones:~D
Macademias, cashews, salted almonds...mmmmmm...
mzloolue 06-08-2004, 02:20 PM Air popped corn, with a bit of butter spray.
Slim-a-bear ice cream bars, I love them, and they have a good bit of calcium.
Ruffles Cheddar & Sour Cream WOW chips, for when I need something naughty.
Peeled baby carrots.
(I'm down over 30 pounds now)
millionairegirl 06-08-2004, 02:26 PM Big believer in balanced eating here! Some of my favorite snacks:
1 oz cheese, cup of berries or small piece of fruit
Some sliced turkey, smashed avocado or guacamole, rolled up in a whole wheat tortilla
a glass of 1% milk (sorry Tracillicious)
Almonds, non fat plain yogurt, some kashi, and berries
Zone bars are good if I haven't been to the grocery store.
CarlieB 06-08-2004, 02:27 PM mzloolue - congrats! That's so cool. Has it mainly been a diet thing, or do you exercise as well? (I hope you don't mind me asking). I just need to lose a few pounds by the end of the year, and any inspiration is great!:)
Okay, thank you, CarlieB! I was getting all wrapped up in biscuits and donuts and elastic waistbands.
My absolute favorite snack, healthy or otherwise, is V-8 juice and a handful of raisins. Baby carrots are great, too. And what's not to love about a MacIntosh apple?
Also, Mr. 3894 makes awesome popcorn - butter-kissed, not greasy or salty.
mzloolue 06-08-2004, 02:47 PM Carlie, I've been doing Weight Watchers. I'm in week 18. I'm embarrassed to say the I have not been exercising much. I was walking, my motivation was getting ready for Disney World, but when our vacation was cancelled, I got discouraged and quit. I need to start back. WW works. :)
CarlieB 06-08-2004, 02:49 PM mzloolue - I have heard very good things about WW - it's basically just portion control and sensible eating, isn't it? I think I would find it easier than doing Atkins or South Beach or whatever. Anyway, congrats!
Keep in mind I do a low-carb thing, so I'm not quite as fussy about fats.
- Nuts. A small handful (check the serving size -- usually 1 ounce, or 3 tbsp) of salted almonds takes care of me for a long time because of the fat content, and because it's so satisfying.
- Baby red peppers (sweeeet!)
- Grape tomatoes
- Cheese "cookies" -- on a sheet of parchment paper, lay out a slice of American cheese, cut into 16 little squares. Make sure to provide space in between, and nuke it in the microwave for a minute. It'll come out a bit brown, but it's crunchy, crispety, and delicious! You can pat it down so remove some of the excess oil.
- Beef (or turkey) jerky.

In the meantime, why not join the Team MousePlanet President's Challenge? You can log a myriad of actvities, not just walking. Housecleaning even counts! See my sig for instructions. :)
mzloolue 06-08-2004, 03:36 PM Thanks Lani, I'm getting over it, but I was supposed to be there(WDW) right now. :( (Where are those WOW chips?)
Bill Catherall 06-09-2004, 09:04 AM My favorite bedtime snack (which is appropriate at anytime, but I like to save it for bedtime): cottage cheese.
sediment 06-09-2004, 10:03 AM Beef or Turkey Jerky.
Carlie, I've been doing Weight Watchers. WW works. :)
Yep-it works for me too-over 30 lbs as well.
Snacks:
baked tostidos chips and homemade chunky salsa
microwave popcorn
sugar free, fat free pudding with fat free Cool Whip
reduced calorie ice cream-right now my favorite is Blue Bunny(brand)-either Fudge Brownie or Banana Split.
angel food cake with strawberries
Diet Coke cupcakes
mzloolue 06-09-2004, 01:18 PM What are diet coke cupcakes?
What are diet coke cupcakes?
Hmm..... that sounds like a "wish sandwich"! LOL :D
Ponine 06-09-2004, 02:31 PM This is what I found on the internet... You ladies with the member status to the Weight watchers board.. get the recipie from there, lets see if its the same!
(I could see it was there, but not read it)
This is the basic cake, and like any other cake mix.. make it into cupcakes. :)
CHOCOLATE CAKE WITH DIET COLA
1 box of chocolate cake mix
1 can of diet coke
2 egg whites
coolwhip (if desired)
DIRECTIONS:
Mix together dry cake mix, 10-12 oz's of diet soda, 2 egg whites (DO NOT USE THE EGG OR OIL LISTED ON THE BOX)
Spray a 9 X 12 cake pan (or cupcake tin) with non-stick spray and bake according to package instructions.
top with coolwhip is desired
WHITE CAKE WITH DIET SPRITE
1 box of white cake mix
1 can of diet diet sprite
DIRECTIONS (see the chocolate cake directions)
*SPECIAL NOTE: some have said an entire can of soda makes the cake too moist ..... 10 oz seems to work out just fine. Experiment yourself to find the best amount for your taste.
mzloolue 06-09-2004, 02:40 PM Thanks Ponine, that sounds strange, but interesting. I'll have to try it, kind of like an experiment.
Yep Ponine-that's the one. You can experiment with the egg whites. Using them leads to a bit more fluffy cake but leaving them out isn't too noticible either. I use cupcakes with liners instead of a cake for portion control-but that's just me.
Used diet coke with devil's food cake. And Sprite with either white or yellow.
Now here's the disclaimer. Some have said on the WW boards that you shouldn't heat diet coke-due to the sweetner used. If you are a bit leery use diet rite, it has a different sweetner. You can also use a 15 oz. can of pumpkin. I've done it both ways.
Oh! Another healthy snack-no pudge brownie mix. Love the stuff-it's so good that I use the single serving recipe on the box. I'm afraid I'd eat the whole box.
And Barry's Bakery Twist are lovely for dunking into coffee!
mzloolue 06-10-2004, 11:23 AM tjrj,
Do you know how many points the cupcakes are? The pumpkin sounds good too, does it change the points much?
Mzloolue: using both the pumpkin and the diet coke, I've come up with 4 points per 2 cupcakes-and of course the cool whip free is free . I just plugged the nutrition info given into the site-your mileage may vary though :) .
Another snack-graham crackers and cool whip free. Place a tablespoon of cool whip between a full-size cracker broken in half. Wrap in plastic wrap and freeze. Yum! Almost like an ice cream sandwich. 1 to 1.5 points per sandwich, depending on which brand of graham crackers you use.
myron61090 06-12-2004, 08:35 PM at the risk of being ridiculed: all i have to say is that i always have tomato slices when i have those cravings..... everyoone always stares at me when i tell them that, or when they see me eat it........ but its good!
The Lovely Mrs. tod 06-12-2004, 09:24 PM mzloolue - I have heard very good things about WW - it's basically just portion control and sensible eating, isn't it? I think I would find it easier than doing Atkins or South Beach or whatever. Anyway, congrats!
I've lost 45.6 pounds on WW...and I like to use Lemon Diet Coke with the white cake.
-TLMt (who used to have even more chins than she does now...)
