View Full Version : Knott's? Large rider issues?
Was reading about the recent changes to operating procedures at Cedar Point. The short is that ever since the Superman fatality, CP has taken the step to shorten the seatbelts on their Intamin coasters (TTD & Millenium Force). The result is that people who used to be able to ride the coaster the year before, are now being turned away. I read an average of 1 in every 15 people are not allowed on MF. The problem that concerns me is that the threshold seems to be pretty strict, they've kicked off male guests with waists of 36 inches! It is a problem because it not only targets people who are slightly out of shape, but anyone who has larger dimensions from working out (most football players, rugby, bodybuilders, etc..anyone with a 36' waist could be out of luck).
So I'm wondering if Knott's has adopted the same restrictions. They already have a ride that is not adult male shoulder friendly - La Revolution. I've seen guys with broad shoulders in average shape get kicked out after waiting 2 hrs.
Anyone with a 36 inch waist tried Knott's recently? Thx.
disneyscott 05-20-2004, 09:47 AM I havent been there in about 5 months but I have a 46in waist and can ride all of the costers.. on Excelerator I need some help to get the seat belt on but once it is on It dosen't hurt. They have a carni spinner called la revelotion that I cant go on but ooo well
Darkbeer 05-20-2004, 10:03 AM I rode La Revolution on Monday, and I weigh about 200 pounds, and have a 39" waist, and decent szed shoulders.... some seats are better than others, and learning to sit back in the seat, making sure you go back as far as possible....
If you think you are on the border line, Knott's allows you to stand at the exit, and between loading the ride, they will allow you to sit in one of the seats, to verify if you can ride (fit). This is a smart thing to do if there is a long wait for the ride....
Brian Noble 05-21-2004, 07:42 AM As far as I can tell, Dragster at Cedar Point is unaffected---it has the longer seat bases and curved bars that are under consideration for S:ROS at SFNE (and probably the other two S:ROS's, as well)---only Millennium is subject to the 1" slack rule. Several of the recent news reports in the Cleveland newspaper markets confirm this.
If this is true, Xcelerator should have no issues, since it has Dragster-style restraints, not Millennium-style ones.
As further (yet anecdotal) evidence, I've been on Dragster already this season with no problem, and I hover between 36" and 38".
Cool, thanks for the info.
I've been amazed at the hostile reaction on other coaster message boards towards the "larger" guests who are being booted off of MF. One person even had the lack of tact to refer to people with a size 36' waist as "gross creatures". Even when people point out that plenty of athletes will also feel the squeeze on Millenium Force, they laugh it off. I doubt very much that even Jesse Palmer from the Bachelor (or most college rugby, football etc.), would fit in that new restraint and he is not "obese" or a gross creature. Then I have to remind myself that most of those posters are likely to be teens, and maybe someday they will grow out of discrimination issues against other people.
Cloud Buster 05-22-2004, 12:23 AM I can say that Knott's at least, really isn't "big people friendly". DL and MM don't seem to have this problem, but the seats on Knott's newer rides seem so darn small, and the seatbelts so short.
I know for a fact that, because of an accident regarding a very overweight woman that led to her death, they WILL remove large people from Perilous Plunge if they have any difficulty strapping them in. (That's one of the reasons it takes so long between rides to do load.)
