I've run across this problem about 3 or 4 times over the past couple weeks so thought I'd ask about it. I'll be sitting here using the Andrew method of reading. I'll stop for a few minutes so there's some period of inactivity on my part on the boards. Then, I'll go back and when I try to post a reply, it tells me I'm not logged in. It just happened right before I posted this note, when I was in the middle of composing a post. I stopped for a few minutes, then finished typing what I was going to say, and when I hit "submit", it told me I wasn't logged in and ate my post, btw. When I logged back in, it still had my last sign-on time as the previous time, not when I was just logged out. So, my inactivity wasn't long enough to reset all my cookies and mark everything read but apparently long enough for the system to automatically log me out. Any thoughts? Thanks.

I'm not sure what could be causing that, but I do know how to avoid it. Keep your buddy list open (Quick Links menu -> Open Buddy List) while you are logged in. The Buddy List automatically refreshes every couple of minutes thereby keeping you active.

I usually do this to keep my cookies from resetting when I know I won't be able to catch up all at once (usually at work).

Oh, good tip Mox. I never knew that.

To keep the system from logging you out automatically you can also just check the "remember me" box when you log in. You'll be automatically logged in even if your cookie resets. Just remember to manually log out if you share your computer and don't want others to have access to your account.

Hmmm, that's a good suggestion. Does it still work if you don't actually have anyone on your Buddy List?

I haven't had this happen to me yet on the boards, but I was wondering...

If this thread gets long enough and someone comes in to read all the posts, wouldn't it be a coincidence if the person got logged out while reading this thread? (sorry couldn't resist cs) :D

Keep your buddy list open (Quick Links menu -> Open Buddy List) while you are logged in.

Thank you, Jeff, for this great suggestion. I've been using it since you mentioned it, and I haven't run into any weird logging out or marking all as read problems. You're second in line to Andrew for "best vBulletin tip ever".

Oh yeah, now I remember. :) One caveat to that method is that when there are multiple pages of new posts, the second and greater pages can lose the "last read" pointer after the 20 minute window. Actually, I haven't seen that problem since the vB upgrade, so maybe it's not an issue anymore.
