View Full Version : Talk about taking advantage of West Coasters!
awinner 05-05-2004, 11:03 AM 7 days w/ tax cat 6-$2252 p.p
cat 4-$2852
waitlisting for cat 1-3
that is a lot of money for a non holiday cruise, being that most cruises offer this saiiling from 799-1499 pp in the summer time...i booked, but will probably cancel,...who knows.
millionairegirl 05-05-2004, 11:13 AM Oh yeah, I'm definitely out. Definitely rather go to Europe for half the price.
If nobody books at first the prices will come down, but if they get a deluge of bookings (and payments) today why should they lower the price?
peasy 05-05-2004, 12:36 PM I called this morning and the lowest category, on the last week in August was $4,600 for a family of four. That seem outrageous. You don't even get to go to the Disney island, and I'm sure the port of LA is going to be sad compared to the Disney hub in Port Canaveral. I just checked now online for the same EXACT thing and it was up to $5,200!
Not Afraid 05-05-2004, 12:49 PM YAY! I'm really glad I don't like cruises. I was considering this one, but I have better places to go with my hard earned cash.
dsnyredhead 05-05-2004, 12:51 PM I've been to the Port in Los Angeles when I took a Royal Carribean Cruise. It pretty much looked like a bus station.
Honestly, having been on the Disney Cruise to the carribean on the east coast; and having been on a Royal Carribean cruise to Mexico, I'd much rather go on the Florida cruise.
Now the 14 cruise, sounds interesting and fun...though I don't think I could handle being on a boat that long. Have fun AVP!
IndianaJenn 05-05-2004, 03:07 PM At first I was excited ... but then as I sat there on hold (forever) and clicked around to check out the ship, I decided against it. I'll always love Disney - but I'm not going to spend that kind of money. I've already been on a Mexican Riviera cruise. Once is enough.
adriennek 05-05-2004, 03:27 PM This is such good news for me...
Next summer my kids will be 1, 4, and almost 7. I've been hoping that we would get a west coast Disney Cruise because goodness knows WHEN we'll have it in our budget to take a cruise out of Florida. But I just didn't know that I would be ready to take an infant on a cruise next summer.
Now the decision's been made for me! Thank you, Disney! No overpriced cruise for me!

Hmm...did that answer the question of whether you are going or not? :)
millionairegirl 05-05-2004, 04:06 PM So is there definitely not going to be a 'Castaway Cay' over here? The itinerary doesn't look like it, but the prices just don't make sense?!
If we had the $$$, I think the 'repositioning' cruise would be way cooler than the 7 night cruises.
HB Tigger Fan 05-05-2004, 05:15 PM This is so sad. They are testing the DCL here to see how it does, thats why there are 12 cruises. If it does well we're supposed to get our own ship. If it doesn't the Magic will go back to FL and no more DCL out here. So what do they do? Jack up the prices sky high, alienating its target market.
For the same price you can fly to FL and take a cruise on the DCL and stop over on the cool island. Gee, what would you do?

This is only a "trial" run of the west coast. There will be NO Castaway Cay. The stops are Mazatlan, Puerta V. & Cabo. We were "told" on our cruise in March that if this trial goes well enough, that they are looking at buying up a section of the port in San Francisco and making their own Disney hub. Maybe then they will find some kind of an island if there is one available on the W.C. They are also looking at cruising to Alaska. YES, these west coast cruises are a rip off considering everything that they are going to be missing compared to the caribbean.
Jack up the prices sky high, alienating its target market.Folks, I know many people think these cruises are too expensive, but they fully expect them to sell out within the week. They've already RAISED the prices today! They apparently haven't alienated their target market.
AVP
AVP and I were able to get on the 14-day May cruise in category 7. (We *really* lucked out on that one). They had some real problems at 10am - the West to East itinerary was available, but the East to West wasn't. It took until about 11 for the May cruise to open up in their system.
We are paying about $5,500 for the 14 days. By comparison, we are paying $2,500 for a 7-day in October of this year. So, there is definately a premium, but comparing May Cruises this year, it really ends up comparable. Especially since we are going through the Panama Canal - something I have wanted to do for years.
I don't disagree that the 7-day cruises seem to be a bit on the pricey side, but Disney has always been able to command a premium - even in the Carribean.
As a point of reference, pricing seemed to work on the same model that airlines use - inventory-demand balancing. As the reservations started, the prices started climbing as well. Apparently some who booked later paid well over the original rate. I could still book the same itinerary now in a category 9 cabin for what I booked our category 7 room for, 6 hours ago.
peasy 05-05-2004, 07:06 PM My family and I went on a 7 day E. Caribbean cruise on the magic a few weeks ago. We paid $3,800 for all four of us in a deluxe verandah room. To call today and get a quote of $4,800 (before the prices shot up more) for the lowest category, stuff yourself in the middle of the ship - was a shock. ESPECIALLY considering you have to hold your nose through the dismal port in Pedro and there is no Castaway Cay. I feel sorry for people who book these cruises. I'd rather spend a quarter of the price and get Royal Caribbean's food! Do you think they would consider dressing up people in animal costumes?.... :D
mrs_toad 05-05-2004, 07:30 PM I'd much rather sink my money into a trip to Europe or Tokyo. That way I could see a Disney park and a lot of other things.
sjcivilady 05-06-2004, 12:44 PM I was thinking of going, but a bunch of friends are planning to go out of Florida in 2006, and at these prices, I can just wait..... I would rather see the Carribbean and I've never been to Disney World.
Pirate Girl 05-06-2004, 12:54 PM The repositioning cruise would be worth the money. Although going through the Panama Canal would probably freak me out.
Niwel 05-06-2004, 01:47 PM I love DCL -- but that is a lot of $$ to see the Mexican Riviera.
I guess the easiest way to figure out if it is worth it is to estimate what you'd be spending on either coast. It is more on the West, but you have to fly to get to the East (for those who use mileage or don't mind flying off-peak the $$ for this part might not be a problem). But you will have to fly in a day earlier to take the cruise or take a red-eye due to the flying time -- five hours -- and time change -- three hours). Obviously if you live near the Port of L.A. there will be no need to fly.
I also wonder if the port fees are increased here -- since they will essentially be "borrowing" a terminal to check guests in and the Port of Los Angeles is one of the largest shipping yards on the West Coast.
AND -- the biggie -- how much do you want to see Castaway Cay (where DCL makes a good chunk of money off guests that they won't make in Mexico). If visiting this piece of paradise is essential, then save your money for Florida.
If you've done Florida and want to be one of a few thousand who gets to experience it here, then go now. If all goes well with this test and they bring a ship here for good, then maybe they will lower prices eventually. If you can wait that long to go on it here, then do so. The one in Florida will ALWAYS be there.
dsnylndmom 05-06-2004, 04:34 PM The repo cruises are defitnely a steal(esp. at the first released prices)but I don't think, for my family, the week long is worth it.
When we priced out the 1 week cruise for our family of four, we found out it wouldn't be that much more to do a land/sea from Florida! (I think like a $400 difference)and I would much rather see the Caribeen and Castaway Cay than the Mexican Riviera! We did figures for the West Coast Cruise vs the 7 days for price of 5 WDW package and we could do the 7 for 5 plus bring my little brother(he's never been)and do 2 days at Universal(including stay onsite for those 2 nights) for the same amount of money if not less! Or do two trips to DL next year, week long each onsite with Universal and Knotts and still be under the cruise price.
I was really excited about the cruise, but I after do the numbers I think it's just not for us. I'll keep waiting for my big WDW cruise in 2006 thank you!

Im going on the repo cruise from here to Florida and got the first released price and it is defently a steal! $1061 per person in Cat 11 I believe for a 14 night cruise.
