a tribute to the greatness of Singin' In the Rain:
while obviously a hit among a more adult crowd, I was pleasantly surprised over the last couple of years to discover that when I showed it to my 6th grade students, it wound up being many of their favorite films of the entire year that I showed them.
there are far too many great films for me to list my other choices...

Singing in the Rain is one my nine year olds favorites as well. Kids love musicals.

I wouldn't go so far as to say "kids love musicals." With the subjects I have been involved with all bieng performing arts related, I've seen kids reactions to many films of many different styles. my point is that there are more recent musical productions that i thought for sure they would love, but they totally lost interest. They totally loved Singin' In the Rain though. and I'm talking about public school children, some of whom don't even want to be taking a dance or theater class, and have never seen anything like it before. That to me says a lot about the appeal of this film and it's stars.

"Yes!" "Yes!" "Yes!"
"No!" "No!" "No!"
And my favorite: "I sent an exclusive story to every paper in town!"

Such an impossilbe question to answer. I love so many different movies for so many different reasons. I can never put down a "my favorite movies of all time" list. I can rank 'em by genre or sub-genre, but there's just no way to pick one must see over all others.
That being said...I'd like to contribute Pulp Fiction to this thread. Not only a fabulous movie, a very influential movie. It always felt to me like the effects of that movie were felt for a long time in movie making.
On a side note, a very underappreciated Tarantino film is Jackie Brown. I've been kind of stuck on it lately and really need to get it on DVD. That movie has attitude and is so compelling. I love it.

You're right, that's probably too broad a statment. My kids love musicals. And certainly those under the age of 10 or so (my kids and their friends) seem to like most of the classic musicals we pop in from time to time: Meet Me in St. Louis, Oaklahoma, The Sound of Music, Seven Brides, etc. But you're right, Singing in the Rain is almost in a class by itself.

Gone With the Wind, what a great movie.
I also love Bringing Up Baby, My Man Godfry, The Killing Fields, Much Ado About Nothing, Breakfast At Tiffanys and Freaky Friday (the original, of course).
Oh, I almost forgot Ferris Bueller's Day Off. I love this movie so much that my daughter's middle name is Sloane-- the coolest, most beautiful girl in school.

I would add "Good Will Hunting". Something about this movie draws me in, every time. I'm not a huge fan of Matt Damon or Ben Affleck but this movie moved me.
