Dear Mouseplanet,

Believe me, I'm a person who does not become offended easily. Yet, I'm a bit put off by a political advertisement that popped on the Mousepad this evening. It was an anti-Bush ad that read "Send Bush Home!" (which is really kinda silly, considering his current home IS the White House :) ).

What bothers me is not that this particular ad was anti-Bush. Rather, I would prefer not to see political ads of any kind on Mouseplanet. I would be just as annoyed had the ad been anti-Kerry.

I expect the Mouseplanet staff has little control over what ads appear on the page. Then again, you must have somewhere decided not to display ads for pornography, and such. Therefore, is there any way to turn off political ads?

Thanks,

Tony

Porn, alcohol, and other similar ads are grouped, and able to be excluded. Political ads, however, are not.

To be honest, I don't forsee us turning those ads off, even if we had an efficient way to do so. The MP staff covers a fairly broad spectrum politically (heck - AVP and I personally cover a fairly broad spectrum ourselves), but in my discussions with various staff memebers, we always seem to agree on the philosophy of so long as the message is within our guidelines.

Ok, since this topic has been brought up, I'm going to ask this question, but I'm guessing from Tony's response that the answer might be "no". Is there a way to lump "dating services" in with the porn and alcohol?

My company does, and the pop-ups trigger our "inappropriate sites" filter, and make it so I can't visit MousePad (or MousePlanet) to take a quick mental break, because of those pop-ups. (If we try to visit too many "inappropriate sites" in a day (3ish), our supervisor gets an email.) I know at least one other person mentioned this a while back, so I believe my company isn't the only one lumping dating services into the inappropriate sites box.

Thanks, and I understand if it's not possible/desirable, but I figure it can't hurt to ask.

I'm not Tony, but I think I can handle this one. Ads for dating services don't "serve" under their own code, like ads for age-restricted-by-law products do. (Alcohol, porn, tobacco). We can block the alcohol/porn/tobacco ads a whole lot easier than we can block any other kind of ad.

But it's something we can discuss with the ad agency.

Ok(If we try to visit too many "inappropriate sites" in a day (3ish), our supervisor gets an email.)Drince, are you allowed to install the Google toolbar? It has the pop-up blocker so you'll never have to deal with pop-ups.

I don't think I can install a toolbar, but I can check.

That's kind of what I figured -

Thanks for the info!

Hmmm - I know the pop-up is prevented from being displayed, but does anyone know if it also prevents the offending site from being logged in any network tracking system?

Any word on pop-up blockers also preventing blocked sites from tracking systems?
